And, of course, the DNS server may not allow just anyone to do updates, or may require signed updates using TSIG or SIG0. DNS question...

Quick question I can't seem to find a google answer on. I've got a machine that gets it's IP via DHCP. Now on our network, the DNS name is pulled off the machine and auto registered. However this machine won't push its domain name. Any ideas where a) the setting for this might be b) any manual step you can use to update the DNS name? I looked at the nsupdate command, but I'm not sure that's the right command. Talking with the network guy, he recalls there being a graphical tool for Linux that would let you do this. Thanks, Tim.

For Sale: Alpha PWS 600AU

600mhz Alpha with 384megs of ram. On board sound and LAN. This is a REAL AU model, with the qlogic SCSI card and the powerstorm video card(in case you wanted to run OpenVMS). I would recommend using a different video card or using the serial console for anything BSD or Linux. I believe it has a 9 gig SCSI disk in it, but I've suplemented it with a 50gig IDE drive on the IDE chain. I've also replaced the IDE CD-ROM with an 68-pin SCSI CD-ROM(yes, thats right, 68-pin). I also have all the original docs with it. I was running FreeBSD 5.3 on it until a week ago when I upgraded the machine. Nice little hobby system. $200 bucks or best offer. If anyone has any questions, or wishes to haggle, please reply to me(and not the list, they hate that). Thanks, Phil

swappiness

We had a discussion about swappiness at the last meeting. Here's what my system defaults to: >cat /etc/fedora-release Fedora Core release 3 (Heidelberg) >cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness 60 I don't see this being changed in any of the init scripts, so the default is most likely changed in the Fedora kernel from 100 to 60. Find command -name

Hi all I'm trying to use a command (anything but my best guess now is 'find'). I want to list files that end in the number 8-16 if they exist for example finding names 5-9 is easy: $ find /dev/vc -name [5-9] /dev/vc/9 /dev/vc/8 /dev/vc/7 /dev/vc/6 /dev/vc/5 I'm having problems though with numbers higher than 10. $ find /dev/vc -name [5-16] /dev/vc/6 I only get 6 back.. Any ideas? -thanks

There are about a billion different ways to do this, and everyone you talk to will do it differently, I'd bet. For starters, this should work: find /dev/vc | grep -E "*([5-9]|1[0-6])" You should take a look at the regex(7) man page. -Jeff

So [5-16] means "all characters between ASCII value of '5' and ASCII value of '1' (none, you'd want 1-5, it doesn't work in reverse), and ASCII value of '6'. There's no logic about numbers in globs that I know of, so you have to work this as 5-9 and 10-16. Something like this ought to work: find /dev/vc -name "*[^0-9][5-9]" -o -name "*[^0-9]1[0-6]" -- Randomly Generated Tagline: Look both ways before you cross the network.

Frankly it's been my sad experience that any vendor that has spent so much money into making anything so proprietary, and you WANT to stay with it (M$ directory) then it's likely it will be more reliable (and likely intentionally designed to ONLY be) delivered on that vendor's own proprietary server OS. Ill throw in with this. I actually started to reply earlier but didn't want to start anything. but yes, I love linux, but it will never emulate proprietary MS functions better than MS.
