Ok, this is to all of the Fedora / Red Hat users. I just loaded FC3 on a new machine, and the only way to get network on it is wireless. I'm trying to use a linksys wusb11 (99.9999% positive it uses the prism2 chipset) . No matter what I do, I can't get /proc/net/dev to show a wireless device. Re: [Wlug] Is there a simple Unix shell command to list dates backwards?

by douglas.r.aker＠verizon.com

Thanks Theo, this is exactly what I was looking for. I actually emailed Thomas Esken (GNU gcal developer), and the best gcal example he could come up was... gcal -f/dev/null -Hno -#0*d1#999 -c-Qxld20- %20070706 But this command works only up until the beginning of any calendar year, i.e. it doesn't easily cross year boundaries like your suggestion does. FYI: I need this sort of command in order to generate charts (using XML:SVG) that display metrics from some DB2 Connect gateways that I admin. The title of one chart might be: Total Daily Connections, last 100 days. If data for any day is missing, I want the chart to reflect that. Currently, the charts I'm creating handle missing days poorly, they simply cover up gaps in the data with the next previous day's metric. Thanks again, Doug p.s. by douglas.r.aker＠verizon.com

I'm looking for a standard Unix shell command that can list an arbitrary number of day dates backwards from today. For example, something like this: $ unixcommand -7 Tuesday July 5 2005 Monday July 4 2005 Sunday July 3 2005 Saturday July 2 2005 Friday July 1 2005 Thursday June 30 2005 Wednesday June 29 2005 Command must transit months, years, leap-years, etc. Does gcal, or any other Unix command, have this capability? Thanks, Doug

Date: Fri, 01 Jul 2005 13:47:36 -0400 From: Andy Stewart <andystewart(a)comcast.net> Freshmeat and Sourceforge are places which host projects. They provide disk space for project files, mailing lists, and a project web page. As you've noted, there are innumerable projects of myriad varieties. Freshmeat just provides listing services (unless things have changed recently). Sourceforge provides hosting. A few years ago, I participated by writing a users' guide for a project called Gimp-Print (now being renamed to Gutenprint). I liked using the software but noted that it lacked documentation for the user. I also knew the project lead since we were employed by the same company. I wrote the users' guide and contributed it to the project using the GNU Free Documentation License. At that time, my proverbial itch was thus scratched. I still like and use the software frequently, but alas I have not had time to properly update the manual. In the Linux community, there are tons of way to help out. It all depends on your expertise and your interests. If you are interested in web based projects, you might want to check out any of the PHP projects. Although they are not usually directly related to *nix, they use the same licensing and run on the common LAMP setup. One way to improve the *nix community is to write documentation. As I am a big fan of FreeBSD I occasionally write tutorials on install and setup of common applications, packages, etc. Bob Breznak On Jul 1, 2005, at 1:47 PM, Andy Stewart wrote: > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA1 > > Ken Jones wrote: > >> I am interested in contributing to the LINUX effort. Moving boot drive from hdb to hda

by Michael Long

I am in the process of recovering my system from a bad drive and have almost succeeded. My system had 2 drives both were very similar in that they each had a version of linux installed with a swap partition and primary partition. The hda drive died in a way that made the mbr unavailable. I switch the drives making hdb hda. I then booted into a rescue mode (Suse) and modified the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and replaced the references for hdb with hda. It now reads kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x31a splash=silent desktop resume=/dev/hda1 showopts initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd I also modified the /boot/grub/device.map file. Upon rebooting the system it comes up allows me to choose at the grub menu and proceeds to boot. The boot messages are: Checking root file system... fsck 1.34 (25-Jul-2003) Failed to open the device '/dev/hdb2': No such device or address Warning... fsck.reiserfs for device /dev/hdb2 exited with signal 6. < more messages > file system is currently mounted read-only. The correct file system is mounted and I can remount it as read-write. There appears to be another reference to hdb2 somewhere. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks, Mike

I am therefore concluding that something in 2.6.12 has fixed this problem since I have not yet locked up this kernel (under any conditions). I did notice several K8 and AMD64 specific notes in the CHANGELOG for this kernel. Thanks again(!!) for all of your helpful suggestions. [Fwd: An Invitation for a Free Webcast: Rocks Cluster and Object Storag e]

by Andy Stewart

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 - -------- Original Message -------- Subject: An Invitation for a Free Webcast: Rocks Cluster and Object Storag e Date: Thu, 23 Jun 2005 17:00:02 -0700 From: Ortiz, Monica <mortiz(a)panasas.com> To: 'andystewart(a)comcast.net' <andystewart(a)comcast.net> June 23, 2005 Dear Mr. Stewart: Panasas invites you and Worcester LUG members to attend a complimentary, online seminar that describes how Stanford University's Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME) achieved exceptional performance and maximum utilization with its Linux cluster. In particular, the seminar will provide details on how the Institute combined Rocks software with an object-based storage system to increase the productivity of its cluster. Rocks Clusters and Object Storage Wednesday, June 29, 2005, 11:00 AM PDT http://panasasevents.webex.com Researchers at ICME use HPC as part of a comprehensive research program. These systems are used to better predict flutter and limit cycle oscillations for modern aircraft, to better understand the impact of turbulent flow on jet engines, and to develop computational methodologies that can facilitate the design of naval systems with lower signature levels. This research can lead to improvements in the performance and safety of aircraft, reduction of engine noise, which will improve the quality of life for people living near airports, and new underwater navigation systems. To accomplish this, ICME needed a cluster to tackle large-scale simulations of flow/structure interaction, aeroacoustic, and elasto-acoustic scattering problems. Join us in discussing how ICME utilized the 164-node Nivation Linux cluster and object-based storage to create a system that is scalable, easy to integrate and manage, and delivers extremely high bandwidth and random I/O. Register for this informative online seminar to: * Hear the challenges ICME faced in building a cluster capable of handling complex mathematical simulations * Learn how object storage systems, like those of Panasas, break I/O bottlenecks hindering cluster performance * Hear Steve Jones' personal experience in managing large-scale Rock clusters and the integration of the Panasas ActiveScale Storage Cluster Highlighted Speakers Steve Jones, Technology Operations Manager, Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering, Stanford University Larry Jones, Vice President of Product Marketing, Panasas Register Online Today!
