Portable MP3 (and ogg) players and Linux

by Andy Stewart

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI gang, I'm starting to investigate the purchase of a new toy - a portable music player. My preferences would be: - - flash, not hard drive, based - - standard batteries (AA,AAA, etc) - - works reasonably well with Linux - - plays ogg (nice but not necessary - aren't the files smaller than mp3) - - plays mp3 I currently have a perfectly functional RioVolt 250 and my only complaint is that it is quite bulky relative to what is available today. I was considering some of the offerings by iRiver, as there seems to be some support by the Linux community. Does anybody own an iRiver flash based player, and what is your experience with it? Does anybody have other recommendations in this area? Maybe we should make this the topic of a meeting??? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI Adam et al, As you may recall, I had a lot of trouble with SuSE and lockups on my dual Opteron system until I upgraded to a stock 2.6.12 kernel (not the SuSE supplied kernel). I haven't tried any kernel version beyond that because what I have actually works and is reliable. I'd be curious to know what kernel version you use and what result you have with it. Re: [Wlug] SuSE dual frustration....

by Adam Keck

Hello All, I am getting past the grub menu. I found more information, though. Apparently, the default SuSE 9.3 kernel does not handle some aspect of the multiple core cpus well. If you boot with maxcpus=1, it will boot properly. http://www.beowulf.org/archive/2005-July/013273.html claims that, once you get it booted, you need to compile rc3 of kernel 2.6.12. This seems odd though; 2.6.12-rc3 came out in April, but the message was posted this month. He may be referring to 2.6.13-rc3, the current release candidate. At any rate, SuSE released an updated kernel package set in June, so I am going to try those packages once my reinstall concludes. -Adam On Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at 11:53AM, Mike Leo <mleo963(a)yahoo.com> wrote: >can you try one of SUse's LIve CD's? > >Also, are you getting a lilo/grub menu or does the >"error" occur before that? > >--- Adam Keck <ghostis(a)mac.com> wrote: > >> Hello All, >> >> I am trying to install SuSE 9.3 on a dual >> dual-core Opteron system. SuSE dual frustration....

by Adam Keck

Hello All, I am trying to install SuSE 9.3 on a dual dual-core Opteron system. I can boot into the installation kernel and do an installation, but when the system reboots it boots to a black screen with a ~2 inch horizontal green line in the upper left-hand corner. I am not sure where to start troubleshooting this, since I do not have much error output. The things I know so far: o Knoppix 3.9 boots fine and runs off CD. o SuSE 9.2's installation kernel boots to the same state. o My install of 9.3 was a basic "click next" install. o http://www.beowulf.org/archive/2005-July/013234.html indicates there may be some issue with the initrd, but does not say what the guy did. My impression is that I am not even getting that far, though. Any help/hints/direction would be much appreciated. Thanks very much! -Adam

Hi, I am building web/database server and am looking for some installation advice. The system will have an IDE boot drive for the OS and a raid for the data files. Is there an advantage to partitioning the raid drive so that the web content is on one partition and the database files are on another or am I better off keeping it as a single partition. System Specs: Dual Opteron 248 2.2 GHz LSI Logic MegaRAID SCSI 320-1 Controller Seagate Cheetah 10K.7 - 73 GB - Ultra320 SCSI Seagate 80 GB IDE drive Suse 9.3 Thanks in advance, Mike

Thank you. Try installing the kernel sources that you're currently running with, go into the kernel source directory (usually /usr/src/linux) then running: make distclean cloneconfig modules_prepare then try the cisco build again, making sure that the cisco make knows about the location of your kernel source tree that you setup above.
