Its Meeting time !

Our meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 10th at 7:00 PM. What will we discuss this month? I was hoping somebody had an iRivier or iPod MP3 player with the Linux software working that would bring it to the meeting to demo it, but so far, nobody has volunteered. (iRiver, iPod, iAudio, for what does the 'i' stand - individual??). One possible area of interest is directory services (LDAP). I don't think we've ever had a talk on that subject. Its my understanding that LDAP is good for more than just creating a giant list of email addresses for an organization. Another possible idea would be a talk about databases. What are the differences between MySQL and PostgreSQL - are they technical or is this a religious war? OK, I've tossed out a few ideas, but to make it work, we need a volunteer. Please send me email if you are interested in leading the discussion on either these proposed topics or something else of interest to the group. Mike's two questions are your best bets right now. If sshd is running and iptables isn't blocking port 22,check your system log. Also, go into /etc/ssh/sshd_config and set LogLevel=DEBUG. That will give us loads of info. Also, what are you using for a client? if you're using ssh, turn on debug on the client side. if you're using puTTY, you can just view the event log by right clicking on the title bar (although you'll have to configure it to not close on exit). Friends, I' ve just re-build the need for my web server. Openssl, openssh, mm, and other defined files are re-compiled with the latest .tar version. Now, I have web server compilled with that. No problem so far the work of the server.' Now, I get "connection refused" when I tried to connect using ssh to the server. Can you please help me here friends ? Should I install a new ssh server ? While the original software was developed on PCs and used floating point, the "Tremor" codec, which didn't require floating point support and was designed specifically for a portable/handheld, has been available since Sept 2002. Given that it was patent unencumbered and released under a BSD-like license, I'm somewhat surprised (though I suppose I shouldn't be) that the support hasn't been more widespread. I picked up an iRiver iFP-799T a small while back and have been quite happy with it so far. A quick rundown on the points you asked about and a couple additions: Company : iRiver Model : iFP-799T Specs : http://www.iriveramerica.com/prod/ultra/700/ifp_799.aspx Flash : Yes, 1GB Standard Batteries: Yes, a single AA Data Transfer : USB 2.0 Update/Upgradeable: Yes, via uploading the firmware and triggering the update. Support Linux : An open source app (http://ifp-driver.sourceforge.net/) is available as well as an alternate firmware that allows you to treat the device as USB Mass Storage (Haven't tried it). Ogg : Specs say yes but haven't tested it yet. MP3 : Yes WMA : Yes (but who cares...) FM Tuner : Yes Recording : Yes, Encodes to MP3 from Mic, Line in, and radio. I've been using it mostly to listen to podcasts (which I'm using bpconf and bashpodder to retrieve) and it has been working out well. Only one oddity discovered so far, at certain low and odd encodings, there are some audio artifacts. I've only run across that particular magic combo once and it was so silly/rare that I didn't even bother to note what it was (really low single digit bitrate, very odd sample rate, etc). The content was still audible, there were just some high pitched chirps overlaid on it. The battery seems to make up about half the weight of the device and it is small enough to fit in a pocket. Comes with a neck strap (which I use to attach it to a belt loop) and a sport arm band (that I found mostly useless). There is also a built in text viewer capability, but I have no earthly idea why... Frank

I wouldn't know if there's a hardware Vorbis player in existence, though I haven't researched it. As I understand it, Ogg Vorbis was designed to be optimal for floating point hardware in PC processors. Anyway, I bought a 512MB flash MP3 player from juicekissdigital.com 6 months or so ago. (Their web site is now "under construction" but I assume their eBay store is active.) Plugged into USB it appears just like a flash media with a FAT16 filesystem, making it Linux compatible enough for me. It goes for 5 hours on a single AAA battery, which I happen to have NiMH rechargables, which is also great for me. Whenever I travel, I take it and 3 extra batteries, though I never used the first extra battery completely. Just poke "mp3 player" into eBay. Now the 1GB units are extremely reasonably priced. Most, like mine, are "Chinese brand," which is fine for my taste, and comes with a hilariously translated manual. Others are SanDisk or other known brands of flash media. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. -Chuck

Portable MP3 (and ogg) players and Linux

Hello All, I am getting past the grub menu. I found more information, though. Apparently, the default SuSE 9.3 kernel does not handle some aspect of the multiple core cpus well. If you boot with maxcpus=1, it will boot properly. http://www.beowulf.org/archive/2005-July/013273.html claims that, once you get it booted, you need to compile rc3 of kernel 2.6.12. This seems odd though; 2.6.12-rc3 came out in April, but the message was posted this month. He may be referring to 2.6.13-rc3, the current release candidate. SuSE dual frustration....

Hello All, I am trying to install SuSE 9.3 on a dual dual-core Opteron system. I can boot into the installation kernel and do an installation, but when the system reboots it boots to a black screen with a ~2 inch horizontal green line in the upper left-hand corner. I am not sure where to start troubleshooting this, since I do not have much error output. The things I know so far: o Knoppix 3.9 boots fine and runs off CD. o SuSE 9.2's installation kernel boots to the same state. o My install of 9.3 was a basic "click next" install. o http://www.beowulf.org/archive/2005-July/013234.html indicates there may be some issue with the initrd, but does not say what the guy did. My impression is that I am not even getting that far, though. Any help/hints/direction would be much appreciated. Thanks very much! -Adam

Hi again... I screwed up my XF86Config file and now X "starts" but the keyboard mouse is all screwed up. Since xf86config does not list Sun, what do I put for the keyboard/mouse type? Server configuration

Hi, I am building web/database server and am looking for some installation advice. The system will have an IDE boot drive for the OS and a raid for the data files. Is there an advantage to partitioning the raid drive so that the web content is on one partition and the database files are on another or am I better off keeping it as a single partition. System Specs: Dual Opteron 248 2.2 GHz LSI Logic MegaRAID SCSI 320-1 Controller Seagate Cheetah 10K.7 - 73 GB - Ultra320 SCSI Seagate 80 GB IDE drive Suse 9.3 Thanks in advance, Mike
