I didn't hack any drivers, nor have I ever. I had thought that perhaps I could start a discussion of this topic, where folks would kick in their 2 cents worth, and collectively we'd come away with more knowledge about using Linux and USB. Its just a thought - I'm not sure anybody is interested, or perhaps this is old hat to most of you. Since we have an upcoming meeting on Sept. 8th, I'm looking for ideas, and thought this might be one. I choose RAID1 over RAID5 because I only had space for two drives, and I only had an HPT302 with dual channels, so I put one disk on each channel for maximum peformance. If I had more money and a 3ware controller, I probably would have gone for RAID5 on my data, since it has a size/cost advantage over RAID1. I would NEVER go for RAID0 for my data, too much potential for data loss. Even with backups. My data is all on a pair of 120gb IDE drives, which are mirrored, and which have saved me from ugly restores, because I noticed that one disk had dropped out and I was able to just re-mirror without any major impact. Just because you do a lot of kernel builds/reboots (and your definition of a lot is my definition of very few, here), that is no reason not to use an initrd. What distribution do you use? You could simply use the packaging scripts that they provide to build your custom kernels. Sure, I know there are tutorials out there, somewhere, I just haven't had time to play with it. So for now, I compromise and boot off a single disk for the OS, but my data is mirrored. PCI IDE card?

I've got a couple of flavors on Linux running on my machine and I'm looking to add another HD to the system to get another couple of distros running. If you're like me, you've probably got boxes of random computer parts sitting around your desk/office "waiting" to be put to good use... The one thing I >>don't<< have is a PCI card that'll add an extra IDE channel. Does anyone have an old one they'd part with? Stream rippers

FYI, a stream ripper (as I've very recently learned) is a program which "listens" to a streaming audio broadcast and saves that information on your hard drive. Streaming audio broadcasts are available on shoutcast.com and icecast.org, and probably many other places. I'm using a program called 'streamripper' (strangely enough) which I found at http://streamripper.sourceforge.net/. I'm wondering what others might be using. It has a feature where songs can be saved as individual .mp3 (or .ogg) files, or the whole stream can be saved in one file. I've downloaded these songs into my portable MP3 player for later enjoyment. There seems to be some controversy about the use of such programs. Frankly, I don't see it as any different than holding a microphone in front of the radio. Granted, the quality is much better with a ripper. Prior to learning something about stream rippers, I had been using the Ogg encoder output feature of xmms while xmms was "tuned" to a streaming audio broadcast. As I understand it, this involves taking the stream source (an MP3 stream generally) and re-encoding it into the Ogg format, which technically involves a loss of quality (can I hear it?
