Meeting minutes from earlier this week

I think there were 7 or 8 of us, with two newcomers (welcome!). The discussion started with GRUB and some of its more interesting features vs. LILO, such as command line editing and adding graphics to the background. I had made a GRUB bootable CD prior to the meeting. GRUB has a large number of features, and we touched on only a few. After that, we somehow ended up on the topic of VNC: http://www.realvnc.com http://www.tightvnc.com <-- There was also interest in the "suspend to disk" feature of my laptop, which actually worked in a live demo. One person asked if it was possible to do this on a desktop machine (I don't think so....). In addition, Mel K. (newcomer) brought his laptop, onto which he wanted to install RedHat 9.0, which was having trouble recognizing his external USB hard drive. I gave Mel my SuSE 9.3 pro CDs and asked him to give that a try. Mel said that he'd keep us apprised of his progress. Pizza / soda followed at the Tech Pizza restaurant where we've gone after the last several meetings. Mel mentioned that he has interest in VistA (open source medical software). With Gentoo I use the 'suspend2-sources', and have had no problems with hibernating both my Athlon 64 desktop computer, nor Pentium3 laptop. A good howto is available on the Gentoo Wiki site, http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Software_Suspend_v2 The instructions are fairly informative, that even non-Gentoo users should be able to use the howto as a stepping stone to getting the feature into their kernel. Splitting Text in linux.

Friends, Can somebody help me here... I have a log with more than 200000 lines in one single file. Can I split it into several defined files as file1, file2, file3, file4, filen where I can defined it for 20000 line for each ? How can I make it ? what command in linux to make it ? Regards, Aramico

SuSE Installation process.

Hello All, Does anyone have in-depth knowledge of the current SuSE install process? I want to get an install to exclude certain GIDs that we use in NIS when the install assigns GIDs to groups owned by packages. I found that I can assign the correct GID to an internal group in the autoyast XML file, but the package that uses that GID still gets a group assigned with that GID. Then result is duplicate GIDs in /etc/group. Ideally I would like to know how to get the installer to ignore certain GIDs. -Adam

Let's see if I can announce the date correctly this month: :-) Wed Oct 5th 2005 7:00 PM The theme of this meeting will be "What is the theme of this meeting?". As of late, that has been a familiar theme. Still, we manage to have fun both during and after the meeting, and that's a good theme (uh, thing)! Without intending to sound like a looping MP3, I'm always looking for someone to lead a talk at the meeting. I don't think I've ever turned anyone down so don't be shy. Having said that, I'm sure someone will come up with some wild idea just to be the first to get turned down. In the absence of a formal speaker, we can start by informally discussing GNU GRUB (http://www.gnu.org/software/grub) That topic will eventually lead us to other tangential topics. I was recently contacted by a person (Mel) who is having some trouble with Debian Sarge on a laptop. The difficulty has to do with loading X onto the laptop, which Mel will be bringing to the meeting. I hope a couple of Debian users appear at the meeting and can help Mel with this problem. I'm about to jetison 10 old Pc's that have PS's. none of them are great machines, and some of them have issues, but you are welcome to any parts i have. Non are eMachines, however. Power Supply Needed

Hi all, Anyone have a Ilssan ISF 120SI compatible Power supply they'd be willing to sell me cheap? This is for an eMachines box that died in a lightning storm. It's for a couple with limited means and I just don't have any spares around the house at all. Specs for what I'm looking for: Input: 100-120VAC 3A Ouput: +3.3V +5V +12V -12V +%VSB 6A 14A 2A 0.3A 0.72A 120W It's a small power supply with a built in Fan that sticks out. We use RH8 as our primary DNS servers and they are pretty nice. Personally, though, i prefer the apt-get system to do updates. There are plenty of repositories for RH8 around for you to get updates from. I don't think i can help you out, but thought I'd share my experiance on up2date vs apt... also, if you install nmap, you can scan yourself for open ports...thats a quick way to see what holes are open. nmap -sS localhost will work. additionally, running the chkconfig --list|grep on command will show you all the services that are set to be running at any time...its good to shut those down with a quick server whatever stop, the chkconfig whatever off, the latter preventing that service from starting at boot. good luck...hope this helps a little anyway. mike --- Pete Wason <codevark(a)netscape.net> wrote: > Hiall! > > I'm wondering if anybody's using RH8.0 and could > assist me in a general package > updating/security audit/admin session. There probably isn't too much in the way of "up-to-date" updates available for it (if any at all). You may want to consider moving to a more recent RedHat product, and if cost is an issue, I recommends the redhat free line - Fedora. FC3 is probably the most stable Fedora release that is currently supported. FC4 has been released but may be a little rougher around the edges. Another distro worthy of consideration is Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntulinux.org/. Also free, but well supported. I urge you to move to a newer distro. The newer kernels are faster, and support better features and hardware. RH8.0 user in Worc. area

Hiall! I'm wondering if anybody's using RH8.0 and could assist me in a general package updating/security audit/admin session. Nothing too crazy, I just need some help grokking alternatives to up2date (yum, etc.) and making sure my server isn't bleeding wildly from it's little pointed head. I live in Sutton.. Pete

The only kink I found after install was that it put a savedefault entry in my grub menu.lst, which rendered my system unbootable. Easy fix: delete the savedefault line, which you can do from the grub menu at boot time if you have to. I like kubuntu. The forums/doc are excellent. One thing I found is that, if you're used to all the extra software bits that come with Red Hat, you'll have to get used to kubuntu not having them. I came from Mandrake, and it didn't take me very long to figure things out and work around the missing bits -- it's mostly a matter of installing the packages that don't get installed by default. My advice: get Synaptic as soon as you're done, it's much better than the KDE version that comes with kubuntu. And you have to get used to the Debian packages (when you go to install other stuff on your own, you'll find that .deb packages aren't nearly as ubiquitous as .rpm ones). Once you get kubuntu working like you want, it's very stable, and very nice. I like it's release cycle better than Mandrake's -- the reason I switched was to get KDE 3.4 without sacrificing stability. Mandrake's latest official release doesn't support it, and the latest club release at the time was painfully buggy on my box -- I actually had to blow the whole thing away, and that's when I switched to kubuntu. If you have already installed the bad packages and are experiencing console lock-up, you can fight your way back by booting to single user mode, setting inittab to runlevel 3.
