Thank you all!! re: mozilla-mail Attach File(s) hung up my Fedora 3 machine. The culprit was gamin as Chuck Anderson had suggested. 'yum info' told me that there is a more recent version for Fedora 3. 'yum upgrade' installed that more recent version. The problem seems to have disappeared. Ain't open source grande! You might try getting 'top' running in a terminal window *prior* to running the "Attach files" experiment which messes up your maching so badly. Insure that 'top' is not displaying idle processes, and that it is sorting by CPU usage (the 'i' command and the '<' or '>', as appropriate). I like to keep a copy of xosview running (its a GUI that shows some of the info shown by 'top' without the gory details). When something goes awry, I can see it immediately. I'm not sure what else to suggest since I use neither mozilla-mail nor evolution-mail (I use Thunderbird). Try Chuck's suggestion - I'll bet it works. Andy I have a question...

by Ken Jones

I am embarrassed to admit that I do not know how to figure this out. I am having a problem with both mozilla-mail and evolution-mail mozilla-mail and evolution-mail both use the same process to "Attach file(s)". When I try to attach a file my Fedora Core 3 machine is toooo slow. It ties up the machine for minutes at a time. If I try to move the GUI is smears. "top" does not indicate lack of memory or lack of cpu cycles. I have not had any luck googling for others who have seen this before me. Do any of you WLUGers have a suggestion. My Fedora Core 4 works very quickly. Ken Jones

Re: automounting

> I'm interested in the automounter. I would be very nice to have my jumpdrive mount when I plug it in. Also, if anybody knows udev... I managed to just set up automounting on my gentoo box, via some udev rules, HAL, D-BUS and a neat little app called ivman. Ivman will detect when new devices are plugged in and create a new entry in fstab if there isn't already an acceptable one (it'll remove the entry when the device is not connected); it can also be set up to do some more interesting things, such as integration to say start up your burning program when a blank CD-R is put in, etc. Using some udev rules (this is a great reference http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html) isn't *that* hard. You can use the program udevinfo to find out information about your plugged in devices to write appropriate rules. For example, I have a rule to link the device to a node /dev/nikon for my nikon camera, whenever it is plugged in. Then, I have an entry in /etc/fstab to mount /dev/nikon at /media/nikon, and lvman takes care of that (detects when that node is linked, reads fstab and mounts appropriately - if I didn't have that entry in fstab it would create one to mount at like /media/usbdevice01 or something). It even (usually) unmounts the device without issue (figuring out why it doesn't always). Since the serial number for each device is specific, my rule just uses that, so it looks like: SYSFS{serial}="SERIAL OF MY NIKON", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="nikon" to link node /dev/nikon to my camera. I had to use mknod to create that node initially (just a simply character device, I believe, can't remember the major/minor numbers off the top of my head). Of course you need to make sure you have hotplug installed and enabled in your kernel, as well as usb_storage and the SCSI modules (needed for the usb-storage module to work, according to kernel documentation). -- Carlton C. I know udev takes care of mounting your specific jumpdrive to /mnt/myJumpDrive, but doesn't the automounter automatically mount cds and other stuff? Or am I in left field? Eric> I'm interested in the automounter. I would be very nice to have Eric> my jumpdrive mount when I plug it in. Also, if anybody knows Eric> udev... I've got udev tamed enough to put devices where I want them when I plug them in. Automounting isn't there quite yet, though my wife would like it. Heck, I just finally switched my desktop to gnome as a full time test. We'll see how it goes with a real desktop she can find things on. Not that I really need icons on my desktop. Anyway, in terms of writing Udev rules, the key is to parsing the output of the 'udevinfo' tool. It's a pain to use in alot of ways, but not impossible. Basically, do: lsusb plug in device cat /proc/partitions ( for usb-storage) lsusb see what changed. udevinfo -q all -p /sys/... -a | less The trick is figuring out which device to look through in /sys/. For Compact Flash adapters and such, I would just cat /proc/partitions and see what changed and do: udevinfo -q all -p /sys/block/sde -a | less and then look through things. Thne I went and edited the file: /etc/udev/rules.d/10_local.rules and added lines like this: # Cruzer USB (Thin, 512mb) BUS="usb", SYSFS{product}=="Cruzer Mini", SYSFS{serial}=="2004351271076612cf2d" , KERNEL="sd?1", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="cruzer-thin" # Cruzer USB (Thick, 256Mb) BUS="usb", SYSFS{product}=="Cruzer Mini ", SYSFS{serial}=="000062894" , KERNEL="sd?1", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="cruzer-thick" # Compact Flash Reader BUS="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0700",SYSFS{idVendor}=="05e3", NAME{all_partitions}="cf" # Epson Printer R300 Compact Flash Reader BUS="scsi",SYSFS{model}=="Stylus Storage ",SYSFS{vendor}=="EPSON " , NAME{all_partitions}="epson_cf" The key was the serial number(s) for stuff, and the idProduct & idVendor (from lsusb) in terms of how to mount stuff like the Compact flash reader which doesn't have a serial number, nor did the CF cards. Hopefully this will help. BTW, I'm on a debian system. John

Hello Mike, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WiFiHowto provides a large amount of doc on doing wifi the Unbuntu way (TM), including disabling eth0. If that does not help, you ought to be able to enable and disable interfaces in the configuration file /etc/networking/interfaces (man interfaces for syntax). On straight Debian that file is parsed by the ifup program at boot time. -Adam On Oct 21, 2005, at 12:31 AM, Cretella, Michael A wrote: > Hey all- > > > I'm running ubuntu 5.10, and trying to understand how the linux bootup > process works.. Disabling eth0 upon bootup

by Cretella, Michael A

Hey all- I'm running ubuntu 5.10, and trying to understand how the linux bootup process works.. Right now upon bootup I'd like to change two things: Not ifup eth0 Configure wpa_supplicant to boot up with the right parameters in order to configure itself to the wireless network here. I think I figured out how to get the wpa_supplicant to work-- I just edited /etc/init.d/wpasupplicant and changed $OPTIONS to the arguments I need in order for it to work. For disabling eth0 on bootup, I could modify /etc/init.d/networking and change the command "ifup -a" to "ifup wlan0" to just boot up my wlan0 on bootup, but I feel there might be an easier way to do this... Hope you can help! -Mike --------------------------- Michael A Cretella Worcester Polytechnic Institute Electrical Computer Engineering '07 cretella(a)wpi.edu (203)610-3618

On my system, I have access_log, error_log, and page_log. The access_log notes my attempts at connecting, while the error_log has been helpful to me in the past with error messages. DELL 720 printer shared on SAMBA??

by Ken Jones

I've unsuccessfully googled this problem. Maybe you folks know a solution. My wife received a freebie DEL 720 printer. It is really a relabeled Lexmark z600 type. By downloading a driver from Lexmark, I got the printer running on my FEDORA 4 machine. I want to share this printer using SAMBA. After installing the same driver on my FEDORA 3 machine its CUPS sees the remote printer and "installs" it. When I ask to print a test page it announces that it had sent the page. Nothing happens on the FEDORA 3 machine to which the printer is attached. It's CUPS says that nothing is in the printer's queue. Any ideas? Ken Jones

RE: [Wlug] deleting a file named "--exclude"

by James Gray

If the Unix shell doesn't like it then try something else... You could try something like: bash-2.05b$ python >>>import os >>>os.unlink('--exclude') >>><Control-Z (just to exit python)> Assuming you have python installed. I think this should be installed by default on most Linux systems. -----Original Message----- From: wlug-bounces(a)mail.wlug.org on behalf of dulsi(a)identicalsoftware.com Sent: Fri 10/14/2005 11:51 AM To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org Subject: Re: [Wlug] deleting a file named "--exclude" No. Unix shells expands everything on the command line before running the program. So "rm *exclude" and "rm ??exclude" expand to "rm --exclude". The program cannot tell that the "--exclude" was expanded from wildcard values. No, because the shell will expand it to --exclude before passing it to the application which will then see it as an option. -- Randomly Generated Tagline: Memory error on Brain1 - R)boot, S)mack upside the head.

No. Unix shells expands everything on the command line before running the program. So "rm *exclude" and "rm ??exclude" expand to "rm --exclude". Doesn't rm ??exclude, or rm *exclude work, if you only have the one file with exclude in it?
