ML 370 + DVD RW

Friends, I have HP ML 370p with DVD RW. Here, I have tried to install RHEL 4 ES, but not work with several diffrent error listed during the installation. But, its all ok after replacing the DVD RW with common cd rom. can you help me here how to copy data from physical hardisk to a blank dvd drive ? whats the command ? Thanks all. Regards, Aramico

Not really, though you might have issues if you have binary modules for closed source drivers. I'd grab the 2.4.31 kernel and try it out. It should work fairly well on there, though you might have issues if you use udev for your devices. Someone else suggested a LiveCD, which I think is a good idea. If you can, trash one of your SATA disks and do a debian/ubuntu install using the 2.4 kernel and see what happens. We run Rackable Dual/Quad opterons at work with RHEL 3 and they just work. But we're only stressing them with CPU bound jobs, not with devices or graphics or audio or anything like that. Good luck! John

Problems with your device tree, no doubt. I think this is a rat hole. Just don't go there. The distribution configs always work for me. They probably see the most testing, if you think about it. One other suggestion: have you checked to see if there are any BIOS updates? I've seen *very* strange problems of the random variety that are really BIOS bugs. If you're really serious about tracking this down, I'd start doing some stress testing to see if you can get a reliable reproducer. Without that, it's tough to address. Or, enable kexec/kdump. There's a quick blurb on it in fedora weekly news, but that's for fedora. -Jeff

Do you have 'third party' modules? It should be no problem having two sets of modules installed, as long as the kernel version numbers are different, since each kernel looks for its modules in a directory with its own name on it. But the new kernel must have new powers. Does SuSE depend on the new stuff? -- Keith

Strangely enough, I could demonstrate more uptime with the "old" SATA code than with libata - go figure. I am suspicious of the 2.6 kernel. I'm surprised I missed it initially. I'm not a Rommney fan, but I have to give him credit for trying to push this. It's a great initiative which will obviously be expensive to implement early on but will of course save hordes of dough for the state in the end. I don't think Galvin is playing politics here...too much, anyway. Like any administrator he is probably worried about big headaches it will likely cause to get this off the ground, but hopefully Rommney has a master plan to get it done as best as possible. -- Gary

Thank you all!! re: mozilla-mail Attach File(s) hung up my Fedora 3 machine. The culprit was gamin as Chuck Anderson had suggested. 'yum info' told me that there is a more recent version for Fedora 3. 'yum upgrade' installed that more recent version. The problem seems to have disappeared. Ain't open source grande! You might try getting 'top' running in a terminal window *prior* to running the "Attach files" experiment which messes up your maching so badly. Insure that 'top' is not displaying idle processes, and that it is sorting by CPU usage (the 'i' command and the '<' or '>', as appropriate). I like to keep a copy of xosview running (its a GUI that shows some of the info shown by 'top' without the gory details). When something goes awry, I can see it immediately. I'm not sure what else to suggest since I use neither mozilla-mail nor evolution-mail (I use Thunderbird). Try Chuck's suggestion - I'll bet it works. Andy I have a question...

I am embarrassed to admit that I do not know how to figure this out. I am having a problem with both mozilla-mail and evolution-mail mozilla-mail and evolution-mail both use the same process to "Attach file(s)". When I try to attach a file my Fedora Core 3 machine is toooo slow. It ties up the machine for minutes at a time. If I try to move the GUI is smears. "top" does not indicate lack of memory or lack of cpu cycles. I have not had any luck googling for others who have seen this before me. Do any of you WLUGers have a suggestion. My Fedora Core 4 works very quickly. Ken Jones

I managed to just set up automounting on my gentoo box, via some udev rules, HAL, D-BUS and a neat little app called ivman. Ivman will detect when new devices are plugged in and create a new entry in fstab if there isn't already an acceptable one (it'll remove the entry when the device is not connected); it can also be set up to do some more interesting things, such as integration to say start up your burning program when a blank CD-R is put in, etc. Using some udev rules (this is a great reference http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html) isn't *that* hard. You can use the program udevinfo to find out information about your plugged in devices to write appropriate rules. For example, I have a rule to link the device to a node /dev/nikon for my nikon camera, whenever it is plugged in. Then, I have an entry in /etc/fstab to mount /dev/nikon at /media/nikon, and lvman takes care of that (detects when that node is linked, reads fstab and mounts appropriately - if I didn't have that entry in fstab it would create one to mount at like /media/usbdevice01 or something). It even (usually) unmounts the device without issue (figuring out why it doesn't always). Since the serial number for each device is specific, my rule just uses that, so it looks like: SYSFS{serial}="SERIAL OF MY NIKON", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="nikon" to link node /dev/nikon to my camera. I had to use mknod to create that node initially (just a simply character device, I believe, can't remember the major/minor numbers off the top of my head). Of course you need to make sure you have hotplug installed and enabled in your kernel, as well as usb_storage and the SCSI modules (needed for the usb-storage module to work, according to kernel documentation). -- Carlton C. I know udev takes care of mounting your specific jumpdrive to /mnt/myJumpDrive, but doesn't the automounter automatically mount cds and other stuff? Or am I in left field? I've got udev tamed enough to put devices where I want them when I plug them in. Automounting isn't there quite yet, though my wife would like it. Heck, I just finally switched my desktop to gnome as a full time test. We'll see how it goes with a real desktop she can find things on. Not that I really need icons on my desktop. Anyway, in terms of writing Udev rules, the key is to parsing the output of the 'udevinfo' tool. It's a pain to use in alot of ways, but not impossible. Basically, do: lsusb plug in device cat /proc/partitions ( for usb-storage) lsusb see what changed. udevinfo -q all -p /sys/... -a | less The trick is figuring out which device to look through in /sys/. For Compact Flash adapters and such, I would just cat /proc/partitions and see what changed and do: udevinfo -q all -p /sys/block/sde -a | less and then look through things. Thne I went and edited the file: /etc/udev/rules.d/10_local.rules and added lines like this: # Cruzer USB (Thin, 512mb) BUS="usb", SYSFS{product}=="Cruzer Mini", SYSFS{serial}=="2004351271076612cf2d" , KERNEL="sd?1", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="cruzer-thin" # Cruzer USB (Thick, 256Mb) BUS="usb", SYSFS{product}=="Cruzer Mini ", SYSFS{serial}=="000062894" , KERNEL="sd?1", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="cruzer-thick" # Compact Flash Reader BUS="usb", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0700",SYSFS{idVendor}=="05e3", NAME{all_partitions}="cf" # Epson Printer R300 Compact Flash Reader BUS="scsi",SYSFS{model}=="Stylus Storage ",SYSFS{vendor}=="EPSON " , NAME{all_partitions}="epson_cf" The key was the serial number(s) for stuff, and the idProduct & idVendor (from lsusb) in terms of how to mount stuff like the Compact flash reader which doesn't have a serial number, nor did the CF cards.
