I've never seen a "sump pump cam" before - maybe you'll be the first?! ;-) Perhaps you should get a water alarm with the ear piercing alarm, and attach a microphone to the computer. I hate being the practical one, but take the time & money you'd spend on that project and install a backup sump pump. Water sensor project

by Mike Leo

NOTE: Cut and pasted from a web post of mine...i just didn't want to re-write it... Since my arc isn't built yet, and we have recieved 27 feet of rain here in New England in the past 7 days, my basement flooded again. The pump went out sometime overnight and i had 3-4 inches of water in my basement/computer room this morning. I am smart enough, however, to have everything up off the floor (except my sun workstation!), so nothing was damaged but the carpet. So i was thinking today, why not put an H2O sensor in and have one of the dozen or so computers page/email me when there is water present? But......I am not a programmer, nor do I have any idea how to interface software with a hardware sensor (that I can't actually find at present on the web). So the quetion is, where do I begin? A quick google search finds alarm sensors, but no interface to a computer serial port...they just start screaming if they get wet. Even if i did find one, where do I start with such a thing, to interface with an OS to trigger an action? Does someone know of a (cheap) product to do this? Not only does is seem like a practical project for the house, I'm sure it will be a good learning experiance as well. Thanks for any advise...I'll be out collecting animals

Network not working on Fedora

by Walt Sawyer

Friday night, my wife was using her computer (lenovo/IBM desktop), then the DSL connection went down (I wasn't here) and then her network card didn't work. That's about the time I got home and found that the on motherboard gig/100/10 Broadcom NetXtreme gigabit... stopped being recognized. OK, sometimes these motherboard NICs go bad. When booting in the redmond product, the ethernet connection was there. It was time to upgrade to Fedora Core 5 so I figured this was a good time. Perhaps the newer kernel would just fix the problem for me. Well, it didn't. It would detect that the correct card wasn't there. I checked dmesg and found no entrys for eth0. I tried adding a 3com (one of the most common drivers!) card and on bootup it didn't see it, but in the network configuration area I was able to add it as eth1 (the Broadcom was eth0). Upon rebooting, it looked for eth0 and eth1 and found neither responding. Is there any reason a NIC would just stop responding? This machine was working just fine until this issue. Thanks in advance Walt

Re: [Wlug] Backing Up/Moving Evolution

by James Gray

Since it sounds like noone else has responded to your question, I'll give it a shot; even though I don't use Evolution. If Evolution stores emails in clear text, and I bet it does then this might work. You could use grep to try and locate one of your past emails some thing like: grep -rlF TEXT ~/* (From the command prompt.) Replace TEXT with an unusual sentance in one of the emails in your folders. This should give you a sense of where the file is located. Once you figure out where the folders are you should be able to simply copy them to your server. I've done this with Thunderbird (from a win machine to a Linux box no less) and it worked well. If all else fails you might be able to find help on the evolution website. > I need to find a way to move this > stuff so I can get a new dual-boot system (windows/linux). Re: [Wlug] Problem with usermod

by Chuck Noyes

That fixed it! I booted a live beta copy of "Dapper" and mounted my / partition and proceeded to follow Chuck's advice. Now all is well. Thanks guys!!! BTW: the "usermod" command does seem a bit awkward. If I'm a member of "n" groups and I want to join another group, I have to specify ALL "n" groups plus the new group. As Jamie mentioned, there is a "groupmod" command, but in Ubuntu, it really doesn't do what I want. From the man page: The groupmod command modifies the system account files to reflect the changes that are specified on the command line. The options which apply to the groupmod command are -g gid The numerical value of the group’s ID. This value must be unique, unless the -o option is used. The value must be non-negative. Values between 0 and 99 are typically reserved for system groups. Any files which the old group ID is the file group ID must have the file group ID changed manually. -n group_name The name of the group will be changed from group to group_name. And "groupadd" just creates a new group. If I understand this correctly, the default behavior is that you're removed from every group _not_ listed, unless you notice the part about "-a". Seems backwards, I'd much rather have append by default, with a "-d" to delete from not-listed groups. I think its much more likely that I'm a member of 10 groups and I wanted to be added to an 11th, rather than add me to a single group and bump me from the 10 I'm already in. I'm sure there's plenty of admin scripts that depend on the current behavior, though. -Jamie

Not Fedora's usermod: usermod(8) -G, --groups GROUP1[,GROUP2,...[,GROUPN]]] A list of supplementary groups which the user is also a member of. Each group is separated from the next by a comma, with no intervening whitespace. The groups are subject to the same restrictions as the group given with the -g option. If the user is currently a member of a group which is not listed, the user will be removed from the group. This behaviour can be changed via -a option, which appends user to the current supplementary group list.

If its a personal system, I live dangerously, $ su # $EDITOR /etc/group :) But what really struck me was "Wow, what a horrible interface! You actually have to specify the full list of groups the user already belongs to, _plus_ the new group?!". Looking around my SuSE 9.x desktop at work, I found this (which does exactly what you were after), [sudo] groupmod -A <user> <group> On SuSE (9.x anyway) groupmod is part of the pwdutils package. But on gentoo, which I run everywhere else, groupmod is part of the shadow package, and it has a more limited set of options, _not_ including "-A". Although usermod in gentoo/shadow has a "-a" option to prevent it from deleting you from the other groups. Sigh... I'm sticking with $EDITOR. -Jamie

Backing Up/Moving Evolution

by Mims Research

Hi Everyone, Is there a utility to back up Evolution? Or how can I move my Evolution folders listed under "On This Computer" from my hard drive to the server upstairs? I save a lot of my email. I need to find a way to move this stuff so I can get a new dual-boot system (windows/linux). I can't even figure out which directory all this Evolution stuff lives in. Are VFolders or IFolders the answer? I haven't tried either of those, but I believe we have those abilities here on our network. As always, thanks for all the help and support you give to this Linux newbie. All my best, Marie

Re: [Wlug] Bandwidth sharing problem

by Beaty McCloud

Since my home upload speed is relatively slower, I use a modified ipshaper script to prioritize the outgoing traffic (web, ssh, udp...). This is done with the tc command and runs on a linux firewall, but also depends on iptables to classify the traffic. You could do the same for downloading, it just drops incoming packets when rate ceilings are reached for that classification, forcing the sender to throttle down. Of course this runs on a linux box tho. Have you considered replacing the linksys? This would allow you to split the bandwidth, and when one host needed more, would "borrow" it from the other if it wasn't using it. If the other host was/is, then too bad, it is stuck at that rate. More info is here: #!/bin/sh # # ipshaper - DSL/Cable modem outbound traffic shaper and prioritizer. # Based on the ADSL/Cable wondershaper (www.lartc.org) # -Beaty On 4/27/06, Andre Lehovich <andrel(a)yahoo.com> wrote: > --- Gregory Avedissian <gma2006(a)verizon.net> wrote: > > Is there an easy way to limit download speed on one or both boxes to make > > them share nicely? 27" Monitor for sale

by James Gray

A coworker of mine is selling a 27" monitor that he is no longer using. Contact me if you are interested and I'll get you his email. Here is his ad: Gateway Destination 27" Monitor - I'm selling a black Gateway Destination 27" monitor. Some of you may have seen the ads Dell has now for the XPS plasma screens, this is a similar concept that Gateway had years ago. This monitor retailed for $400. This monitor's maximum resolution is 800X600 at 65 hertz. It has a VGA cable input and RCA audio inputs for the mounted speakers on the sides. There are two modes, "PC" and "TV" that allow you to adjust the color settings seperately when you're watching television as opposed to using it with your PC. This monitor worked perfectly for me as my television. I used a computer as the center of my multimedia system with a TV tuner card and I was not disappointed with the monitor at all. The monitor takes a standard PC power cord, and I will include one with the monitor. I can also include a 30 foot VGA cable $25 more. If you are running this monitor from a computer with a DVD player, you will be astonished at the quality difference because this monitor operates at 800X600 resolution instead of a standard TV resolution of 484X280. That's about *twice* the clarity! The cheapest 27" TV at Best Buy is $197. This is twice the TV for less than twice the price! Price: $225 - negotiable

The buzzword to read up on is "traffic shaping". Assymetry is going to be a problem -- while you have a lot of control over what you transmit, you don't have so much control over what the other end transmits, but that's what you really want to throttle. --Andre __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
