odbc help

Has anyone ever gotten a linux box to speak to a MS SQL server? I am only assuming i need to configure an odbc DSN from linux to MSSQL, but am not successful yet. The end goal is to get phpBB2 to talk to my existing MSSQL database. In order for that to happen, apache has to use php and php has to use an odbc connection to MS SQL. Well, php in apache is working now, and php is set to use MS SQL. isql -s SERVER NAME PWD connects me to my MS SQL database just fine, but iodbctest is failing. I don't know enough to know what is wrong. Any help would be greatly apreciated! mike

We're running MySQL 4.0.26 - does that matter? Would Hostgator email us if there was a true and urgent compatibility issue? Ok. It's now working as it should. What I did was 'sudo dpkg -P --force-depends hal' followed by 'sudo apt-get install hal' With the 'new' hal, all is working. I must've been the victim of an intermediate broken hal version during an intra-dapper upgrade. Some more information about this problem; "adept" downloaded some upgrades this morning. Among them were some 'hal' files (hald, hal-device-manager, and a couple of others). After installing these updates, I rebooted my laptop and tried to pass the --retain-privileges argument to hald (e.g. sudo hald --daemon=yes --retain-privileges). The result was that the hald still barked at me for using the --retain-privileges argument. BUT, the hald man page reports that --retain-privileges IS a valid argument, however running 'hald --help' reports that --retain-privileges is NOT a valid argument. Obviously there's something going on here that needs to be fixed. If I go to http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software_2fHalTraces, I should be able to use the --retain-privileges argument. My version of hald is 0.5.7. Anyway, it looks like a bug. Someone reported bug #44770 against hald in the ubuntu bug tracking system and it's new, only a few days old. It's very similar to what I've found. I'm no hald export, but I think you're mixing commands. Seems like you want to restart the hald init service, but you're actually just calling the daemon straight-up. I think you want: sudo /etc/init.d/hald restart Sine the --retain-privileges option is set in /etc/default/hal file you shouldn't need it on the command-line (the init script won't accept it anyway). If it still fails, add "--verbose=yes" to /etc/default/hal file to get some debug messages. hald in ubuntu 'dapper'

Hi All I upgraded by laptop from 'breezy' to 'dapper'. It looks like the hald does not accept the --retain-privileges argument, even though the upgrade tool added it to the /etc/default/hal file. Now the hald won't start. Also, my USB thumb drives won't automount. I'm thinking it may be related to the hald problem. If I run 'sudo hald --retain-privileges restart', the command fails with the help screen for the command. Has anyone else out there seen this problem? Anyone got a fix? I can always comment out the 'DAEMON-OPT=--retain-privileges' line in the /etc/default/hal file, so the hald starts without error, but the USB drives still don't automount. Thanks, -Chuck

I think finding the sensor might be easy....can anyone point me to the means to communicate with it via linux? I'm guessing something as simple as "if circuit is open, do nothing, else page mike", but I am at a complete loss on how to go about that piece of it. If you have a free serial port open, you could wire up an open/close switch to one of the handshaking lines to easily detect a water level over a certain point. The open close switch could be some kind of floater like the way sump pumps activate. no doubt i have some sump pump work ahead of me as well. it wasn't actually the pump that failed, but the hole, but that is another story. NOT having water in the basement is MUCH MUCH better than having water but getting paged because of it...but even with 2 sump pumps, a mule and sand bags, I would rather know when they all failed and be notified, than not. I hate being the practical one, but take the time & money you'd spend on that project and install a backup sump pump. Water sensor project

NOTE: Cut and pasted from a web post of mine...i just didn't want to re-write it... Since my arc isn't built yet, and we have recieved 27 feet of rain here in New England in the past 7 days, my basement flooded again. The pump went out sometime overnight and i had 3-4 inches of water in my basement/computer room this morning. I am smart enough, however, to have everything up off the floor (except my sun workstation!), so nothing was damaged but the carpet. So i was thinking today, why not put an H2O sensor in and have one of the dozen or so computers page/email me when there is water present? But......I am not a programmer, nor do I have any idea how to interface software with a hardware sensor (that I can't actually find at present on the web). So the quetion is, where do I begin? A quick google search finds alarm sensors, but no interface to a computer serial port...they just start screaming if they get wet. Even if i did find one, where do I start with such a thing, to interface with an OS to trigger an action? Does someone know of a (cheap) product to do this? Network not working on Fedora

Friday night, my wife was using her computer (lenovo/IBM desktop), then the DSL connection went down (I wasn't here) and then her network card didn't work. That's about the time I got home and found that the on motherboard gig/100/10 Broadcom NetXtreme gigabit... stopped being recognized. OK, sometimes these motherboard NICs go bad. When booting in the redmond product, the ethernet connection was there. It was time to upgrade to Fedora Core 5 so I figured this was a good time. Perhaps the newer kernel would just fix the problem for me. Well, it didn't. It would detect that the correct card wasn't there. I checked dmesg and found no entrys for eth0. I tried adding a 3com (one of the most common drivers!) card and on bootup it didn't see it, but in the network configuration area I was able to add it as eth1 (the Broadcom was eth0). Upon rebooting, it looked for eth0 and eth1 and found neither responding. Is there any reason a NIC would just stop responding? This machine was working just fine until this issue. Since it sounds like noone else has responded to your question, I'll give it a shot; even though I don't use Evolution. If Evolution stores emails in clear text, and I bet it does then this might work. You could use grep to try and locate one of your past emails some thing like: grep -rlF TEXT ~/* (From the command prompt.) Replace TEXT with an unusual sentance in one of the emails in your folders. This should give you a sense of where the file is located. Once you figure out where the folders are you should be able to simply copy them to your server. I've done this with Thunderbird (from a win machine to a Linux box no less) and it worked well. That fixed it! I booted a live beta copy of "Dapper" and mounted my / partition and proceeded to follow Chuck's advice. Now all is well. Thanks guys!!! BTW: the "usermod" command does seem a bit awkward. If I'm a member of "n" groups and I want to join another group, I have to specify ALL "n" groups plus the new group. As Jamie mentioned, there is a "groupmod" command, but in Ubuntu, it really doesn't do what I want. From the man page: The groupmod command modifies the system account files to reflect the changes that are specified on the command line. The options which apply to the groupmod command are -g gid The numerical value of the group’s ID. This value must be unique, unless the -o option is used. The value must be non-negative. Values between 0 and 99 are typically reserved for system groups. Any files which the old group ID is the file group ID must have the file group ID changed manually. -n group_name The name of the group will be changed from group to group_name. And "groupadd" just creates a new group. If I understand this correctly, the default behavior is that you're removed from every group _not_ listed, unless you notice the part about "-a". Seems backwards, I'd much rather have append by default, with a "-d" to delete from not-listed groups. I think its much more likely that I'm a member of 10 groups and I wanted to be added to an 11th, rather than add me to a single group and bump me from the 10 I'm already in. I'm sure there's plenty of admin scripts that depend on the current behavior, though. -Jamie

Looking around my SuSE 9.x desktop at work, I found this (which does exactly what you were after), [sudo] groupmod -A <user> <group> On SuSE (9.x anyway) groupmod is part of the pwdutils package. But on gentoo, which I run everywhere else, groupmod is part of the shadow package, and it has a more limited set of options, _not_ including "-A". Although usermod in gentoo/shadow has a "-a" option to prevent it from deleting you from the other groups. Sigh... I'm sticking with $EDITOR. -Jamie
