need to test notebook

A friend of mine just got a used notebook computer, but it has no AC adapter, and the battery is dead. He'd like to test it out before he invests any significant money into it. I'm wondering if anyone has an AC adapter for a Dell Inspiron 18000 and would be willing to bring it to the meeting, so we can see if this thing will fire up. And does anyone know of a good place to get used parts locally (like an AC adapter)? Thanks, Greg

noob question on Altova XMLSpy

I'm trying to install Altova XMLSpy, following instructions at http://www.altova.com/support_platform_linux.html and saw the comment: "Copy the complete 2006 Relewase 4 installation directory from Windows to the Linux partition (this avoids any installer-related issues); this should be an installation where you have already requested/purchased and entered a key-code, because the key-code request mechanism doesn’t currently work under WINE." so I guess I follow the rules and enter the key-code I have in hand using Windows to enter the key-code, then "Copy the complete 2006 ..." etc etc Any better ideas? Hi Doug, My efforts with XML have involved XML generation (using perl programs) and XML transformations (using xsltproc). I haven't had much experience with a manually operated XML editor. I did like the free pspad program a lot though: www.pspad.com. Also, on Suse Linux there's the KXML editor. I found a phenomenal one called the Altova XML Suite which has a free 'home' version (which I've not played with). The version I used was the enterprise one, and it did everything I wanted in an editor, including giving me lots of graphical feedback and it managed schemas and stylesheets in a clean and well organized blend of graphical interpretations and text. The non-free version, however, is very non-free (~$1000 for the 'pro' suite and ~$1800 for the 'enterprise' suite.) I've also used, with some good success, Architag XRay XML editor which had a very good, entirely text based suite that was free. I did have problems that some of the more quirky and poorly defined parts of the schema I was writing worked differently in XRay's native interpreter than in Xerces (or was it Xalan ... it was a little while ago), which I was using to do some validation. I've also heard that oXygen is supposed to be good (although, they didn't have a demo last I looked, so I haven't looked any closer than that.) I'm very interested if others have had good experience with any free (or less non-free) tools. You can find out more about Altova at www.altova.com. Hope that is somewhat helpful ... Location, Inc. is actively seeking Red Hat Linux System Administrator Services to perform: 1. Weekly patch management updates for the Company's five servers located at NEDV in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The servers are currently configured with Linux Red Hat Enterprise. The System Administrator will perform updates through the Red Hat Network (http://www.redhat.com/software/rhn/) <http://www.redhat.com/software/rhn/) > The System Administrator will alert Company when upgrades or critical patches to Company's operating systems or layered products become available. Based on the System Administrator's knowledge of the stability, necessity, and/or practicability of the upgrade, System Administrator will offer recommendations via email that may benefit Company's systems. Upgrades and patches will be performed weekly upon Company's acknowledgment and acceptance of the System Administrator's recommendation to proceed. I am not sure where one would get one though. Hi John, I've built a few PCs over the past few years, so I can share some experiences. #1: Built from scratch using a Soyo motherboard, Duron CPU, Powmax micro-ATX case. Cheapest system I could build, and one of the noisiest I've ever owned. The dinky 230W power supply has a cheap noisy fan, and the Duron runs super hot so it needs constant fanning. #2: Antec Aria case, older Intel PIII + Intel mobo. The Aria case is crowded inside in strange ways, making most 3rd-party heatsink/fan solutions impossible. I have a hack solution using some springs to hold it place. The front power switch on the Aria was flaky, causing the unit to power off randomly (I made the "reset" button the power switch as a workaround; the "power" button does nothing, much to my wife's frustration when she tried to power it up to play StepMania). The Aria is mostly plastic and flimsy. Avoid it, despite its smallish size and pretty looks in pictures. But the Intel CPU+mobo is decent and doesn't run too hot. #3: AMD64 x2, Tyan motherboard with NVidia chipset, Coolermaster Centurion case. This is my main system these days, it runs quiet, and I'm happy with every part of it. Wattage numbers: [model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+] Off:4W linux (idle):81W 1 core spinning: 112W 2 cores spinning: 145W Compare to this P4 system, [model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz] off:4W linux (idle): 105W cpu spinning: 167W The VIAs are seductive, but when I looked harder at them, they either required small (=noisy) fans, http://mini-itx.com/news/images/story0386-05L.jpg or ridiculous heatsinking to run fanless, http://www2.multithread.co.uk/images/en12000e_alt1_large.jpg So I would avoid them. For server purposes, it sounds like reusing your existing Dell box is ideal. I still have my former main desktop (2x Celeron 466) running my internal web server, Postgresql, etc. For the desktop, if I were building a new system today, I would look into the Intel core2/double/duo/whatever, retail packaging for the nice quiet Intel fan, and a mobo with an Intel graphics chipset. The core/foo's run lower wattage than recent AMDs (I hear), the Intel graphics are decent for 3D stuff, and the GPU drivers are open source. No dealing with ATI/NVidia driver madness. -Jamie

Looking for a new system

Guys, I've been looking around for a new system at home, basically to act as a file server (NFS, Samba) and backup server using Bacula. It also needs to run http and mysql and other daemons as needed. I'd like to get at least a pair of 250gb drives to mirror them for storage, with LVM volumes on top. And of course room for expansion to another pair of drives down the line. But I'd like it smallish and quiet as well. Oh yeah, it needs to have a PCI slot for a SCSI controller, since my tape drive is SCSI for backups. Desires: - small - cheap - quiet - low power - boots without a keyboard/mouse needed at all - onboard video (don't really need it at all) - PCI slots for expansion - four 3.5" drive bays internally - SATA ports on board - AMD or VIA EPIA - 1Gb of RAM or more. I've looked at the Via EPIA style systems. Just not sure if they have enough oomph for what I want. The other thought is to just take my old Dell Precision dual cpu Xeon 550mhz box and make that my main server, holding all my data, etc. It's got the drive bays, and PCI slots and scsi controller all in there already. I could add in some SATA controllers for the new disks without a problem. And it would continue to hold my ISA 8-port serial card. And it's got the memory for what it would be doing pretty much as well. Then I'd just get a new system for my desktop with a much smaller disk drive. I use qwk.net. Not as cheap as some others people have recommended but they have excelent service. I believe they handle all of those requirements in their $10/month plan but haven't checked to be sure. I've never checked what linux distro they run as it doesn't matter to me. I have been a happy DreamHost customer for a number of years now. They have had a few hiccups over the past few weeks, but for less than 10 bucks a month and the excellent support and service they have given me over the years I can't really complain. They run Debian and provide pretty much every service you'd need including ssh. Their bandwidth and storage is insane even on the low plans.
