If not, I could try to give a talk about the Smart Package Manager, which (thanks to Greg Avedissian) I have been using on my laptop for a month or two. If other folks know more about this than I know, it could turn into a discussion where we could all learn something new. I am biased about that, of course. :) Same here. I don't use Exim, but I do use SpamAssassin and am pretty happy with it. I've also heard that CRM-114 works very well, but is difficult to set up. The author lives in Acton, is very active on a local motorcyclist email list, has done welding for me in exchange for beer, and appeared on a couple seasons of Junkyard Wars (Crash of the New England Rubbish Deconstructionists). So maybe I can't recommend CRM-114, but I can certainly recommend the author. :) -- Rich

Not A Lixnux Question, But

Hi all, My organization is considering submitting an application to the FCC for a non-commercial full power radio station. An FCC window for applications will open sometime in early 2007. I need an engineer who has the resources and willingness to help us with this. I know there is mapping of spectrum involved and I know we must submit engineering data to the FCC with our application. I just don't know any engineers who can do this, so I thought I'd toss it out here. Our agency is a non-profit PEG station located in Athol, Massachusetts. We need to find alternatives to communications because the future of cable access television is constantly in jeopardy. I can explain more if you like. Any resources you might be able to offer would be great. We do have a small stipend we can offer, so it's not a totally freebie job. Xandros/Debian newbie question

Being a trusting fellow and having faith in Tux magazine in particular, I decided to spend $60 on Xandros 4 Desktop Linux, based on a review in the Septmeber issue. >From the review it appeared that Xandros was like a better version of Freespire/Linspire: even more useful software like RealPlayer out of the box, better documentation and support, and at least as easy to ise. Whatever software wasn't included directly in the distro, I figured, would be available with one or two clicks from Xandros networks- or at least from Debian. Problem is, there seems to be very little software available from Xandros networks (maybe 50 packages), and my 4 year old daughter's favorite software gcompris is not available. (By the way, she's going to get her own computer soon, and she says she would never run Windows, only Linux.) Xandros warns you against selecting any other repository other than their own, yet I (recklessly?)selected the "unsupprted debian site" as a second repository- but with no luck - still no gcompris and few choices. Truecrypt and Backups

Hi there, These two topics are completely unrelated. I was going to mention this tonight but it slipped my mind... A) I was curious if anyone is or has use(d) the truecrypt file system (truecrypt.org) If so do you have any recommendations or possible alternatives. I am thinking of using truecrypt for a partition on a USB thumb drive. B) Backups -- Giving finite resources/knowledge what software do people use to do full backups? Simple is better. And drive images are an option. I'm actually proxying this question for someone not on this list. Any insight is useful. The NV *chipset* soldered onto the Tyan provides IDE, audio, ethernet, and so on, and all that stuff is supported by in-kernel (GPL) drivers. Except maybe the NVRAID, which I wouldn't use anyway. A friend of mine just got a used notebook computer, but it has no AC adapter, and the battery is dead. He'd like to test it out before he invests any significant money into it. I'm wondering if anyone has an AC adapter for a Dell Inspiron 18000 and would be willing to bring it to the meeting, so we can see if this thing will fire up. noob question on Altova XMLSpy

I'm trying to install Altova XMLSpy, following instructions at http://www.altova.com/support_platform_linux.html and saw the comment: "Copy the complete 2006 Relewase 4 installation directory from Windows to the Linux partition (this avoids any installer-related issues); this should be an installation where you have already requested/purchased and entered a key-code, because the key-code request mechanism doesn’t currently work under WINE." so I guess I follow the rules and enter the key-code I have in hand using Windows to enter the key-code, then "Copy the complete 2006 ..." etc etc Any better ideas? Hi Doug, My efforts with XML have involved XML generation (using perl programs) and XML transformations (using xsltproc). I haven't had much experience with a manually operated XML editor. I did like the free pspad program a lot though: www.pspad.com. Also, on Suse Linux there's the KXML editor.
