I don't feel there's a need to ban job postings altogether. Andy's method seems more than reasonable, though I'd suggest that ANY such posting get the go-ahead from Andy or Frank regardless of the poster's tenure here. I can't think of a reason why such a requirement would be objectionable to anyone. My thoughts on the whole incident revolve around the fact that more than anything else, WLUG - including the mailing list - is a community explicitly defined as a place where linux enthusiasts can get together. The whole topic of job postings is already a little bit of a grey area, but so far they'd all been either posted directly by people in WLUG, or sent to Andy and relayed to the list. This has worked at least well enough that nobody complained. In this case, however, things went differently. The user quite obviously went through the trouble of signing up for the mailing list with the sole purpose of being able to send an email that was part job posting and part recruiter advertisement. This, in my mind (and quite a few others, based on the responses) crossed over the line. There are plenty of well established sites online for employers and employees to look for each other, and I doubt that anyone in this group would have any trouble finding them. We all dislike the massive advertising on the web (even though it helps support much of the free access we enjoy), so members of the responded to that (I believe). Part the cost of having an open, free-flowing discussion list is being open to occasional content that we dislike. As long as it's only occasional, I say we live with it. If it becomes excessive, then we deal with it. I'm not even sure there was really much wrong with the posting, other than the strong marketing flavor of the posting ("we're great; work for us"). I don't think the posting was worth a flame, much less new posting rules. Bill

In my opinion, if any group member abuses the list, they should be first asked to stop and then have their privileges revoked if they continue to abuse the list. The post did mention Linux, it did have "JOB" in the subject, however, the recruiter did not ask permission to use our list. Is that sufficient cause for immediate revocation from the list? Perhaps so, perhaps not - you tell me. I don't recall anybody asking this particular recruiter to stop doing what he did. We should revoke with care. In summary, I propose the following for your consideration: a) Recruiters who wish to post to the WLUG mailing list need to request permission to do so, and if granted, preface the subject with "JOB" so people can filter accordingly. As acting president, I presume that the permission would be granted by me. b) Any recruiter who abuses the list by failing to ask permission prior to posting, or by an excessive volume of emails, will be asked to stop (including removal from the membership list if necessary). c) Group members may post relevant job openings as long as they preface the subject with "JOB". I invite constructive discussion on the proposal, and counter proposals if appropriate. Ubuntu switch user & screen lock

I'm running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. I've recently used the "switch user" option to log in without logging my son out. However, after logging out of my account, the screen is locked for my son, and his login password will not unlock the screen. Anyone else seen this? TiA, Bill

Hi, It sounds like something funny is going on with the boot splash program. If this was happening to me I would turn it of and do some debugging. You can do this right from grub. When the menu appears hit 'e' (less the quotes of course) to edit. Then move the cursor down once to the kernel line. Hit 'e' again and remove the words 'splash' and 'quiet' from the line. Then hit <enter>, and lastly 'b' to boot. This is a one time change for this boot. You can make these changes permanent by editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst. Read the directions inside the comments and modify it appropriately. Do not edit the lines directly. If you do they will get overwritten by an update. Once you have edited the file appropriately run the 'update-grub' command and reboot. There is a possibility that you are out of range too. I believe that there is a configuration file in /etc/usplash. You should be able to change the splash screens resolution there. The last bit of advice I can give is to make sure your Nvidia drivers are up to date (the stock Ubuntu one's "should" work... I haven't had to download from NVidia in a while). If your video is OK when booted with Knoppix, you could mount your hard drive and fix it that way. I'd look at /boot/grub/menu.lst and comment out any gfxmenu commands for starters, since you mentioned that it goes out to lunch around that time. Screen goes blank with ubuntu and geforce 8800 GTS.

I have system I just put together with a PCI-Express Geforce 8800 GTS running ubuntu 7.04. During installation of Ubuntu everything showed up fine on screen. After installation, I ran into the problem that right after grub starts loading linux, the screen goes blank (monitor light turns from green to amber) and stays that way right up until X loads, at which point I get video. This hasn't been a problem so far, but I just installed some updates and it seems like now X isn't loading or I'm getting some sort of message before X loads, because it turns on and just stays blank the whole time. It seems like it would be easy if I just put a different video card into the system, but I don't even have another PCI express video card. I also don't have any PCI video cards anymore. All I have are AGP cards and the system doesn't have an AGP slot. So, it looks like taking the hard drive out and moving it to another system is the only option. Any thoughts on why the screen is doing that would be appreciated. The monitor doesn't seem to be getting no signal, because normally it brings up a message saying no signal rather than just blanking. It seems more like it's gone into a power saving mode.
