Thanks for these resources. It looks like the worcestercoop.org site may not be maintained anymore. I have found some other contact info and will follow up on that. Any other folks you could send my way is greatly appreciated. The Free Geek project looks like my idea on steroids. Too bad they are on the other coast. They are a good resource though. Does anyone have experience with local recyclers? There's a computer co-op in Worcester that's run out of a church basement. I'm CCing some friends who are involved. It's a public lab that also builds computers to give to neighborhood kids. http://www.nindy.com/wcc/ My experience is that Ubuntu is very easy for people who are beginner Windows users to pick up. People who are advanced enough to burn a CD in Windows can usually try it out themselves no problem. I've not followed their progress in many years, but they were quite strong back in 2003, and still seem to be going rather well, with other regional FreeGeek "family members" popping up across the country. A little workstation support may also be needed now and then. The initial projects include: 1. Wrapping up a combined BackupPC/BACULA project - set policies and procedures - document - test restore 2. Establish a source code management system using Subversion with appropriate clients/tools on workstations - help develop policies, practices, and procedures - debug 3. Help design and then build a 3-tier test to production source code flow scheme using three servers (local, called "DEVELOPMENT", remote 1 called "STAGE", and remote 2 called "PRODUCTION". DEVELOPMENT for testing (playground), STAGE for "staging" to production (final test), and PRODUCTION for release. Other than when in a staging mode, PRODUCTION and STAGE can be switched into service as required should one or the other fail. Full details of these requirements will be provided, of course. Other help that will be needed in near future: 1. Assist company technology move to unified quarters (currently two facilities: Engineering in LITTLETON, MA and Administration/Sales in CAMBRIDGE, MA). Somewhere "in-between" has not been selected yet. 2. Assist in developing a better authentication scheme for remote (embedded) Linux data acquisition boxes. Ongoing: Retainer for telephone consultation, problem-solving, system maintenance, etc. Qualifications: 1. Thorough systems administration knowledge and experience with Linux servers and workstations 2. Depth of knowledge and experience with bash, perl, and php to facilitate automated processes. HTML nice to know. 3. Understands security implications/exposures and includes these considerations in all designs and work. 4. Has available time to focus on major projects such that they can be accomplished within a mutually-agreeable timeframe 5. Can execute a non-disclosure agreement to protect company information 6. It looks like you can do it in Icedove (Thunderbird). i've never tried it. Edit --> Folder Properties --> Retention Policy And then you can set it by number of messages or days or for messages that have been read. Automatically deleting old email

Is it possible in Evolution (or another email client) to configure messages to be deleted after a specified period without manual intervention? I have a few folders set for mailing lists and shopping offers, but the contents are irrelevant after a few days. I'd like to be able to set up each folder to delete messages older than seven days, for example. Thanks.

Pete, It might help us a bit if you were to stick a copy of your smb.conf file somwhere we could look at it... In my experiences setting up samba, I've hit a couple of odd problems.. 1. When working with samba I've found selinux to be the bane of my existence so I've been turning it off. 2. Samba is pretty good about logging any problems it encounters... I hope that helps... Tim. although I love money, I bet we can solve this via email. You can email me the money if you want. You have 1 CentOS server on it with data you want to share to your Windows machines? I wil PAY someone to come to my house and help me configure Samba on my CentOS server. I have three Windows machines set up with an admin user and a non-admin user. I don't really care right now if the non-admin user can access my server, I just want seamless access as admin so I can transfer stuff for my websites without using floppies or CDs. I have lots of money. No, wait, I *don't* have lots of money :) but maybe we can work something out. If I can make my server an ldap server and set up domain stuff, cool. If not, whatever works. I also have a Pegasos running MorpOS (which has its own copy of Samba), and a couple of Amiga 3000s which could either be setup with smbfs (which I had working at one point), or they could just FTP to the linux box (assuming I can get SMB access there from the Windoze side).
