And why we hate users. :] Sorry, no real answers, because I don't think you're going to find one that makes you happy. The urge to cleanup is nice, but counter productive unless your on an embedded device which can't handle all the excess libraries. It's not an easy battle to solve. John

Alex, Just wondering, but what student organization is it? I am a little biased here, but I would recommend installing CentOS over Debian, but I'm sure that others on this mailing list will disagree with me. This guide should be a good starting point for what you are looking to do: http://www.howtoforge.com/centos-5.1-server-lamp-email-dns-ftp-ispconfig <http://www.howtoforge.com/centos-5.1-server-lamp-email-dns-ftp-ispconfig>The NSA has really good guides on securing Operating Systems, here is the one for RHEL/CentOS: http://www.nsa.gov/ia/guidance/security_configuration_guides/operating_syst… <http://www.nsa.gov/ia/guidance/security_configuration_guides/operating_syst…>Hopefully this gets you on the right track, if you have any further questions please ask. -Conner On Sat, Apr 4, 2009 at 4:44 AM, Alex Camilo <alex.camilo(a)gmail.com> wrote: > The student organization i belong to has recently been entrusted with a > retired dell power edge 2650 rack mount server. gl over ssh

by bkn＠ithryn.net

Hi all, I've run into snag with using ssh x-forwarding and GL. I'm trying to run a program which uses GL remotely. The program runs and the GUI pops up with sliders and such visible, but the GL part of the gui is not displaying. everything else with the program is functional. When i start the program from the prompt i did notice the following error, libGL error: XF86DRIAuthConnection failed libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering and on the side that displays the program i see the following error in the xorg.log file (each line represents each attempt at running the program), failed to authenticate 8 failed to authenticate 9 I've google'd around and haven't much useful information. i do have write permissions to /dev/dri. Also local GL programs display just fine, this only happens with ssh forwarding (i've tried ssh -X and ssh -Y). Both machines are ubuntu, the display machine is ubuntu 8.10 and the other is 8.04. They both use the stock xorg.conf file, which is pretty minimal, i'm guessing that's because xorg tried to determine everything at runtime. If anyone has any hints or suggestions, let me know, thanks. Thanks, -- brad

The Care and Feeding of a dell power edge 2650

by Alex Camilo

The student organization i belong to has recently been entrusted with a retired dell power edge 2650 rack mount server. Me and another club member are going to be in charge of setting up and maintaining the server. I'm pretty sure there is a lot of information i'm simply not aware of and i was wondering if anyone with IT experience would be willing to give me a few pointers. My current plan is to install a minimal system (prefferably debian based) install the services i need (LAMP) and then harden the box with a set of restrictive iptables rules and keep up to date with security updates.

The main problem with sticking with it is there isn't any package management, so you have to keep abreast of security / feature updates and make sure everything plays nicely with everything else. Might I inquire why you want to put yourself through that? It's a fun experience but the system gets outdated very fast. If you're tried of binary distros I would suggest Gentoo. It's a fun meta-distro that is built from scratch but with a package management system. Also, if you ever find the hankering to build your packages from scratch you can and just tell portage so it doesn't clobber stuff. I have always used kermit for this w/ my Mac laptops and USB-DB9 dongles. Price Chopper is the place where you turn onto Highland Street to get to WPI. Turn onto Highland, going East. Go down to West Street (next traffic light), and turn left there (or the street before) and find a place to park in the next block or so. The cross street you come to is Institute Road, turn left there for a possible parking space, or use the campus map to locate parking lots. The Lower Wedge would be located west of West Street, and north of Institute Street. Entrance to the Lower Wedge is facing that square on the WPI map (a common) in front of building A and H, that has the x-shape thing in it. That's supposed to represent the walking paths across the common. Entrance is nearer to H than to A.
