How is the sound on the -29 kernel? Sound has been giving me fits on the various ubuntu kernels since April 08. I need headset to work; don't have or use external speakers. Mobo = ASUS M3A78-Cm, which has Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) Even if not happy, if I had to I could put up with the USB disconnect thing, but headset dysfunction would be unacceptable. Odd. 2.6.28 was unproblematic from the traffic on LKML. I see many more complaints about 29. Maybe Greg ported good patches into stable. Never had jumping mouse that I recall. My (new) PC using a little KingWin mouse (no longer available); "old" PC using old Logitek; have used other Logitech including one that's now connected to the laptop (the one I could not post /var/log/messages for). Daughter PC using Logitech mouse since her light-up one died. These Logitech mouse are low-end, 3 buttons. Two are identical, that can work I believe a 5-button. Can get mfr part numbers if needed. Keyboards are miscellaneous, mainly slim-type, inexpensive Rosewill (Newegg's own brand) which these seem to be mfr by "Chesen." Can get mfr part numbers if needed. Will try the newer kernel per J. R. Mauro suggestion & check back in. Ive noticed that logitech mice seem to have strange issues with linux, Example i have a wireless logitech USB Mouse and keyboard, And every so often the mouse freaks out and jumps all over the screen clicks on things while it does and then returns to normal. Next time it happens ill post a copy of /var/log/messages pertaining to the issue, Perhaps your issue is related? Sorry, didn't see you already had given version/distro info. See if you can upgrade to a more recent kernel; tons of issues with the input layer were fixed between .24/.26 and now. Other advice: ensure that evdev is the driver being used. Other than that, it could be hardware issues. P.S. I would recommend .28 as I don't think .29 is incredibly stable. Is it normal for USB to disconnct/reconnect repeatedly, many times per minute? Is that still considered random and normal? That's what we have here, in the three different computers that I have access to today. Not a few times, but zillions of lines in /var/log/messages. It's worst in the older PC. The mice mostly have been pretty standard Logitek versions, nothing fancy or unusual. How can I find out if the lockup is caused by "X fighting over the hardware", or by drivers? USB can randomly dis/reconnect and that is normal. The lockup issues could be related to other drivers and/or X fighting over the hardware. Keyboard and mouse repeatedly disconnect/reconnect

by E Johnson

Tonight I am being reminded several times per hour that something weird is happening here. I have a mouse and keyboard USB disconnect problem that has been hanging around for a couple of years now. Across the room where my old computer sits quietly running, the red light in the mouse keeps flashing as it goes off then comes back on, even though this computer is idle. So I checked /var/log/messages, and sure enough, messages appear there that correspond with the times the red light flashes. Messages like these crop up regularly and often in /var/log/messages Computer 1: Apr 24 02:47:40 geurig kernel: [1086766.208280] usb 5-1: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c03e Apr 24 02:47:40 geurig kernel: [1086766.208286] usb 5-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 Apr 24 02:47:40 geurig kernel: [1086766.208292] usb 5-1: Product: USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse Apr 24 02:47:40 geurig kernel: [1086766.208296] usb 5-1: Manufacturer: Logitech Apr 24 02:47:40 geurig kernel: [1086766.432055] __ratelimit: 1 messages suppressed Apr 24 02:48:13 geurig kernel: [1086799.620065] usb 5-1: USB disconnect, address 109 Apr 24 02:48:14 geurig kernel: [1086799.872028] usb 5-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 110 Apr 24 02:48:14 geurig kernel: [1086800.024007] usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Apr 24 02:48:14 geurig kernel: [1086800.065154] input: Logitech USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse as /class/input/input112 Apr 24 02:48:14 geurig kernel: [1086800.092124] input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Logitech USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse] on usb-0000:00:10.1-1 This PC is running Debian Lenny kernel 2.6.26-1-686. Same thing often used to happen with the USB keyboard, too. Now I'm using a PS2 keyboard in this PC, which does not result in these disconnect messages, but still seeing these messages about the mouse. Sometimes this happens over and over again many times within a short period of time (several times/minute). There were lockup problems related to this problem when I was running Etch, after this keyboard or mouse USB disconnect thing had disconnected and reconnected some large number of times, I think it was well over a hundred times. Keyboard and/or mouse would no longer accept input, forcing me to have to ssh in and reboot it, or if I couldn't do that, had to hard reboot. Restart X is not enough to fix this. This has happened with various different mice and keyboards. So we installed a USB card, thinking this might be a hardware problem with the USB ports, but no, the same problem crops up no matter if the mouse or keyboard is plugged into the card, or into the USB ports in the case. Then we thought it might be a problem in Etch, so we upgraded to Lenny. But it still happens. Also happens in Ubuntu. The latest issue (see below) was a long string of these disconnect/reconnects, then a lockup of the mouse and I believe keyboard. Had to ssh in to stop the problem (by shutting down). This new build is using my used hard drive, but I don't think that is relevant. Below is only a small piece of var/log/messages, where the problem seemed to change after several hours from the familiar mouse disconnect/reconnect, to something else. These mmessages were repeated many times (over a hundred): Apr 24 13:16:24 geurig kernel: [1124490.152288] usb 5-1: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c03e Apr 24 13:16:24 geurig kernel: [1124490.152294] usb 5-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 Apr 24 13:16:24 geurig kernel: [1124490.152300] usb 5-1: Product: USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse Apr 24 13:16:24 geurig kernel: [1124490.152304] usb 5-1: Manufacturer: Logitech Apr 24 13:17:24 geurig kernel: [1124550.713733] usb 5-1: USB disconnect, address 53 Apr 24 13:17:25 geurig kernel: [1124551.128022] usb 5-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 54 Apr 24 13:17:25 geurig kernel: [1124551.280008] usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Apr 24 13:17:25 geurig kernel: [1124551.324800] input: Logitech USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse as /class/input/input812 Apr 24 13:17:25 geurig kernel: [1124551.356089] input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Logitech USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse] on usb-0000:00:10.1-1 Apr 24 13:17:25 geurig kernel: [1124551.356251] usb 5-1: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c03e Apr 24 13:17:25 geurig kernel: [1124551.356257] usb 5-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 Apr 24 13:17:25 geurig kernel: [1124551.356263] usb 5-1: Product: USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse Apr 24 13:17:25 geurig kernel: [1124551.356267] usb 5-1: Manufacturer: Logitech Apr 24 13:18:26 geurig kernel: [1124611.968623] usb 5-1: USB disconnect, address 54 Apr 24 13:18:26 geurig kernel: [1124612.468024] usb 5-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 55 Apr 24 13:18:58 geurig kernel: [1124644.288028] usb 5-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 56 Apr 24 13:19:30 geurig kernel: [1124676.032024] usb 5-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 57 Apr 24 13:19:40 geurig kernel: [1124686.684056] usb 5-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 58 Apr 24 13:19:54 geurig kernel: [1124700.008027] uhci_hcd 0000:00:10.1: Controller not stopped yet! Has anyone run into this before, and if so, did you get it fixed? Thanks very much, Liz J

Good disaster recovery / business continuity planning books

by Eric Martin

I'm currently updating all of the documentation at work and I'm looking for some resources specifically for Disaster Recovery plans and Business Continuity Plans. I've looked at the SANS reading room for some stuff, but I'm still looking for more. Does anybody have any good recommendations for books? Thanks in advance! -- Eric

If you didn't get an email directly from me to you (i.e. not via the wlug email list), then you have missed pre-registration deadline. I generated the final list of keys at about 4:30pm today. Even so, you can certainly still participate--you'll just need to print your key's fingerprint 10-20 times for distribution to others, as it says here under "Right Before the WLUG meeting": http://www.wlug.org/keysigning/ We usually end the meeting by 8:30-9pm, depending on how long things take. I work until 8pm, about 20 minutes away. How late will this be running if I wanted to stop by? Is pre-registration required, or just optional? Pre-Registration: WLUG Keysigning, Wenesday April 22nd

by Chuck Anderson

I've put together a web page describing the procedure for Pre-Registering for the Keysigning to be held at our next WLUG meeting. This is also linked from the WLUG front page: http://www.wlug.org/keysigning/ If you wish to participate, please check it over as there are a few steps you need to perform before arriving at the meeting. Thanks, Chuck

Re: [Wlug] Ubuntu == FAIL WHALE (was: Release party Ubuntu 9.04)

Agree, Ubuntu is pretty good & getting better all the time. Update here: Lenny installed very nicely & so far is rock solid, running the CPU less (Xorg was somehow using lots of CPU in Ubu Hardy), and things generally smoother all round. Still working on my DVI issue... monotor mfr assures me the latest driver will fixit. I like Lenny better by a considerable margin. Liz J

So, it's three votes for buggy and two for not buggy. :) It's good to know I'm not totally crazy. I don't want to totally dis on Ubuntu. It's perfect for people who just need a word processor and a web browser. The problems tend to be in less commonly used features, like virtual consoles and xinerama in Andy's case.
