Seconding Brian's idea. Build a computer: get a processor and motherboard, RAM, a PSU, a case, hard drive, maybe a vid card. This can be done for 400 or less if your needs aren't terribly big, or if you can reuse a hard drive or something. Then rather than running the various distros as virtual machines, install them in your newly-built computer. Make some extra 10 G partitions on the hard drive, then install a different OS in each partition, keeping your home directory containing your personal files as its own separate partition. Then you can test and compare Linux distros until you find the one that works best for you. There are people in WLUG who can help you through the build process or the installation process, if you should want a consult as you go along. To add on the previous reply: 1.) FreeBSD is great and I use it in many places, but their current offerings for hosting VMs are a little sparse. QEMU/KQEMU and older VMware versions work, but not much more. 8-CURRENT will run reliably as a domU in Xen, though, so progress is coming. Linux offers you VMware, Xen, KVM, VirtualBox, etc. 2.) You may want to consider saving some money and putting your own system together. They're pretty clearly reselling standard parts (the case is an Antec Sonata III with included 500W power supply, for instance), and unless you *really* need a Core i7 right now, there are a lot of bargains now on high end Core2 Quads and DDRII memory that will last you for a while. I'm thinking about buying their new Apollo rig, http://www.ixsystems.com/apollo and ask them to install some kind of virtual machine software on top of FreeBSD (or PC-BSD) so that I can learn various linux distros running as clients. Re: [Wlug] Virtual Machine Manager

by dulsi＠identicalsoftware.com

Discovered why windows only uses one cpu when run from vmm. It is due to the "-cpu qemu32" command line option to qemu-kvm. Is there a driver for windows that will allow it to use multiple cpus when qemu32 is used? Is there a way to change what -cpu setting the vmm sends? For the time being I renamed qemu-kvm and created a shell script that removed that argument before calling the renamed command.

Virtual Machine Manager

by dulsi＠identicalsoftware.com

Anyone familiar with virtual machine manager and kvm. I'm having some issues with a windows virtual machine. The system is Fedora 11 and the virtual machine is Windows 2008 Server. If I start the virtual machine from the virtual machine manager, it only has a single cpu despite my setting it to eight. If I start the machine from the command line, I can get four cpus but not eight. In both cases windows seem to display the eight cpus in the device manager (or whatever program it is). It has been suggest that windows was imaged on a four core machine before being loaded on the eight core machine and that something in windows is maxing at four cores. But that doesn't explain why the virtual machine manager can only start one cpu. I just played around on my home machine with a fedora 10 live cd and it recognized the two cores on that machine and used them from the virtual machine manager without problem. Also upped it to three cpus without problem.

Hi Andy! I thought I'd pass along my latest forecast (can you tell I wish I were going to the BBQ?)... *Updated Shrewsbury Area Weather for 7/23-7/27//2009 (see disclaimer at bottom)...* Start your dehumidifiers and check your sump pumps!! *Today & Tomorrow* Today: Dew point ~65°F, Temps ~70°F, Winds WNW to NE @ 2-7 MPH. Friday: Dew point ~61°F, Temps ~70°F, Winds NE to WSW @ 2-10 MPH. A tropical air mass-based storm system will produce heavy amounts of rainfall during the next 24 hours in the greater Shrewsbury area. The Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center indicates a less than 30% chance of development of a tropical storm, but heavy rains will arrive and cause minor to moderate stream, tributary and small river flooding. It is too early to determine the exact timing/location of storm axis, but it looks to be centered more over eastern MA. Rainfall should start ~8 PM tonight and begin to taper off ~8 AM tomorrow. 2 to 3 inches of rain during this 12 hour period are likely, with a potential for amounts as high as 3 to 4 inches. Isolated pockets of even greater precipitation amounts are possible... Remember: *Turn Around - Don't Drown!* ~18-24" of water will float a car and ~8 inches of moving water will knock a person off their feet. Flooded basements have the added risk of electrical shock... ** Regards, Steve -- Stephen C. Re: [Wlug] BBQ?

by Stephen Daukas

I can't make the BBQ - to much to do before traveling to a wedding - but here is my forecast from yesterday: *Shrewsbury Area Weather for 7/21-7/27//2009 (see disclaimer at bottom)...* *Summary* A Low off Delmarva Peninsula will move into our area later today, and into the Gulf of Maine Wednesday. Warm and humid High will make Wednesday the better day of the next several, but a backdoor cool front will bring more unsettled Wx on Thursday and Friday, including possibility of TStorms. Effects from the Bermuda High will persist through Monday. *Today* Dew point ~61°F, Temps ~65°F, Winds generally E running 4-6 MPH. Precipitation across western MA, northern CT and southern NH with axis of persistent heavier rainfall across eastern half of southern New England. Rainless periods toward mid morning, but 1-2 inches of rainfall in some areas by end of day. *Wednesday* Dew Point ~61°F to ~65°F. Temps ~81°F. Winds NW-WSW @ 1-8 MPH. Clouds start to clear during afternoon. Should end up as a partly cloudy afternoon. This will be the best day of the workweek. *Thursday* Dew point ~68°F, Temps ~76°F, Winds generally S running 2-8 MPH. "Backdoor" cold front moves into our area disrupting warmer and more humid air from the Bermuda High. This will result in cooler temps and increased risk of rain and TStorms. TStorms will lead cold front. *Friday* Dew point ~65°F, Temps ~81°F, Winds generally SW running 5-7 MPH. Similar to Thursday, but lower probability of precip. and TStorms a High reasserts. *Saturday - Monday* Dew point ~654°F, Temps ~80°F, Winds variable 2-6 MPH. Temps near normal, typical summer diurnal cloud cover with potential for showers and afternoon TStorms. * Disclaimer:* My forecasts should not be used for anything other than general information. You should not send my forecasts to others without this disclaimer attached so that there is no chance of misinterpretation by others. Thanks! Regards, Steve -- Stephen C. Fedora 11 and mingw32

by dulsi＠identicalsoftware.com

I installed fedora 11 on my old laptop and turned back on glitch free audio. It almost works perfectly. Sufficient that I probably wouldn't bother turning it off now. I think the hard drive is starting to fail so I decided to purchase a new laptop. Since I'd like some 3D functionality now I decided to go with the Intel GMA X4500. Unfortunately Fedora 11 stumbled here. I thought the picture quality wasn't very good and found it was using the vesa drivers not the intel drivers. Searching found that others had the same issue but it worked on Fedora 10. Tried a Fedora 10 live CD and the display was nice and sharp. Modified the xorg.conf to use the intel drivers and Fedora 11 also became nice and sharp. Anyway onto my question, has anyone played with the mingw32 cross compiler on Fedora 11? I've created a simple hello world app and cmake file (since I hate autotools). I've got it compiling by creating a Toolchain file but it seems like that is something that should be provided with the mingw32. Is there a standard Toolchain file somewhere and I just haven't found it?

I was wondering if any of you know how to make one end of a Alex> unix socket look like a file? What exactly are you trying to achive here with eagle's rudimentary file IO? Do you want to feed Eagle a design in realtime from the socket? Or be able to send data to/from the app from another host? What? I've read the suggestions, and they all have some merit, but I'm still at a loss to understand what you're trying to accomplish. Once we know that, maybe we can suggest a better solution than sockets. John
