Hi, Ted! Welcome to Wormtown. Sounds like you got some good support from Verizon, if the person actually helped you after you said you were using linux. I've never had good luck with that. Sometimes I lie and say I'm using windows, and sometimes I tell the truth. Mostly, I don't call Verizon tech support because, 1. I rarely have problems with the service, and 2. when I do, they're generally less than helpful. Ignore the CD they gave you. Assuming they gave you a combination modem/router, all you have to do is open a web browser and put in the address, 192.168.1.1 to get to the router setup utility. If you can get to that point, a Verizon tech can step you through it. With DSL, it's just a matter of setting it to PPOE and entering your Verizon username and password. (and turning off or securing the open wireless and maybe even remote administration that are default settings, and possibly turning on the firewall.) What model modem did they give you, and are you using a separate router? HSI Vent Maybe Help?

Hi! I am new to the area, and a long time Linux user (not uber geek, just user). I signed up for Verizon HSI. I finally got service yesterday, I rushed hope plugged in my equipment, and called up to tell them their "start-up" CD won't work. I wanted to know how to work around that. I worked through the menu, and entered non-Windows, Non-Mac OS X operating system. I was actually excited to find out that I had that option! When I got through, I explained my problem, and after he asked me to spell "Debian" I knew I was in trouble. After putting me on hold, he told me that he had to check his notes, and gave me a number, and told me to call it, because I have a Mac. I explained to him that I don't have a Mac, and then he said to call the number. I called, and it was the number for Linksys customer support. I called back, and fortunately got through to someone who knew that Linux was an operating system. He said they don't support linux, but then helped me anyway. Ultimately, they found out my line is broken and a tech will be coming. Why would Verizon give me false hope that they support non-PC and non-Mac operating system? Is there a more linux-friendly HSI provider in Worcester? Thanks for hearing me out, Ted

Adding to that: for FILE in $( grep -lRF moe somedirectory/* ) ; \ do echo mv -v $(dirname "$FILE") destination_path ; done Remove the "echo" and repeat if it looks Ok. grep, maybe

Looking for some guidance; I have several files within several folders (5 files per folder, and thousands of folders) that I need to search a text file within each folder for a word match (like three_little_pigs.txt, and I need to find "moe", if he's listed) and then when a match is found I need to move (not copy) that entire folder (and it's 3~5 files contained within) to another location... I'm thinking grep, but don't know the correct syntax to make all this happen. I can easily find all the folders (1949 of them) and the word match 3923 times within the text file(s)... Hi Caobin, Our event will be in Fuller Laboratories in Upper Perrault Lecture Hall. Our School is at 100 Institute Road Worcester MA 01609. You may park in the parking lot on Boynton Street which is next to our library and Fuller Labs and across the street from a new, large residence hall. If you google maps 30 Boynton Street, Worcester MA 10609, you will be right across from where you can park and Fuller Labs is up a ramp to the north end of the lot. Hey all, I wanted to remind you all of the Installfest we are having at WPI this Friday, sponsored by the Worcester Chapter ACM. We will have developers from Gentoo, Debian and Redhat along with a couple of other activists in the Open Source community to participate in a panel discussion and Q&A session. Later in the evening we will beging the actual Installfest. Our Gentoo Rep may also being doing a short presentation on Embedded Linux, which is sure to be interesting and fun. The keyboard is a bit small but it's not unusable, at least it's got the keys in sane places, unlike some small machines (dell mini). I think it makes the perfect portable terminal or ebook reader. Parts are very cheap and it's not difficult to work on. It's a bit like a more modern HPLX machine, though a little larger. Power management support- with the stock build is very recent anyway. I don't think it could even suspend to ram until earlier this year. I'm not certain how many more updates it'll get with the two new hardware versions (and windows) coming. That's one of my main reasons for sniffing around for alternatives. :) Take care, James

Unable to make it tonight... still planning on presenting in Oct.

Hey Gang, I'll be unable to make it to the meeting tonight, however I still plan on doing a talk next month on "pygame". What's "pygame" you ask?!? "pygame" is a set of python libraries that wrap SDL written in C and assembler. These libraries take the nitty gritty out of writing games with python, or as they put it "we take the pure out of game development". I'm going to talk about the libraries in depth (with slides), show off a silly game I've written and then dive into the code of the game so you can see how absurdity easy it is to use. Obviously my talk is going to be python centric, but no worries. I'm using this as an excuse to teach myself python so it'll be educational to the python guru and the python neophyte alike. Well not for general computing, but I find it to be a nice PDF reader with its nifty screen. ;-) While I like the reader in Sugar, I want to see how well the other FOSS readers work on the platform. If I get some time, I might take your suggestion to simply yum install a light-weight desktop. PCF has an XO-1. I played with it when they first got it. “Sugar” runs on top of Fedora, so there’s no real reason to re-install unless you want Debian or Ubuntu. I’m too lazy to find instructions on how to get it to boot into XFCE instead of Sugar. I seem to remember you could basically “yum install“ your way to a full desktop. http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Software_components Overall, I wouldn’t recommend it for adults-- it really is designed for children. WPI ACM Installfest

Hi all, Sorry to say that I wont be able to make the meeting tonight because I have class, but I figured I would talk to you all in email so you may be able to discuss this tonight. I am the ACM president at WPI and on October 2nd we are having an Installfest starting at 7pm in Fuller Labs.
