They are not. Mention Linux and you get "Sorry, we don't support Linux. I can't help you with your problem." or the famous "What is Linux?" It took me almost a month to convince them that my line was bad and to send a technician out... They were not interested in any issues that I proved on my own. Hi, Ted! Welcome to Wormtown. Sounds like you got some good support from Verizon, if the person actually helped you after you said you were using linux. I've never had good luck with that. Sometimes I lie and say I'm using windows, and sometimes I tell the truth. Mostly, I don't call Verizon tech support because, 1. I rarely have problems with the service, and 2. when I do, they're generally less than helpful. Ignore the CD they gave you. Assuming they gave you a combination modem/router, all you have to do is open a web browser and put in the address, 192.168.1.1 to get to the router setup utility. If you can get to that point, a Verizon tech can step you through it. With DSL, it's just a matter of setting it to PPOE and entering your Verizon username and password. (and turning off or securing the open wireless and maybe even remote administration that are default settings, and possibly turning on the firewall.) What model modem did they give you, and are you using a separate router? HSI Vent Maybe Help?

by Ted Nebus

Hi! I am new to the area, and a long time Linux user (not uber geek, just user). I signed up for Verizon HSI. I finally got service yesterday, I rushed hope plugged in my equipment, and called up to tell them their "start-up" CD won't work. I wanted to know how to work around that. I worked through the menu, and entered non-Windows, Non-Mac OS X operating system. I was actually excited to find out that I had that option! When I got through, I explained my problem, and after he asked me to spell "Debian" I knew I was in trouble. After putting me on hold, he told me that he had to check his notes, and gave me a number, and told me to call it, because I have a Mac. I explained to him that I don't have a Mac, and then he said to call the number. I called, and it was the number for Linksys customer support. I called back, and fortunately got through to someone who knew that Linux was an operating system. He said they don't support linux, but then helped me anyway. Ultimately, they found out my line is broken and a tech will be coming. Why would Verizon give me false hope that they support non-PC and non-Mac operating system? Is there a more linux-friendly HSI provider in Worcester? Thanks for hearing me out, Ted

Brett brings up a good point here. I think all of the above have had lowercase L's in them, but it looks like an uppercase i. Copy and paste solves this problem, but you could then run into the issue of all on one line problems. I'm sorry I didn't specify that. All of my above command should be run on one line and the RFl is AR-EF-el. I'll have to remember this. I was only coming up with things that involved using xargs and dirname, but I never tried anything because I've run into issues with xargs not working by element and only working with entire lists. > > -BR > > Randall Mason

For this to work, I think you need to add the '-l' (lowercase L) option to grep such that it only prints *names* of files with matching lines instead of every matching line in the file. And, to avoid seeing lots of errors with moving directories with multiple matching files, add a test to the dirname to see that it exists before trying to move it. Something like this: grep -l -RFI "moe" <search-space> | while read file;do dd=`dirname $file`; [ -d $dd ] && mv $dd <destination>;done -BR

There's also a useful tool in ``moreutils'' called vidir, which lets you filter out directory names in a pipeline and view them in an editor/pager > Sorry, I keep forgetting which email address I signed up with... > > I would add quotes and use while, just in case the directory names have > spaces and such. Adding to that: for FILE in $( grep -lRF moe somedirectory/* ) ; \ do echo mv -v $(dirname "$FILE") destination_path ; done Remove the "echo" and repeat if it looks Ok. grep, maybe

by Maurice

Looking for some guidance; I have several files within several folders (5 files per folder, and thousands of folders) that I need to search a text file within each folder for a word match (like three_little_pigs.txt, and I need to find "moe", if he's listed) and then when a match is found I need to move (not copy) that entire folder (and it's 3~5 files contained within) to another location... I'm thinking grep, but don't know the correct syntax to make all this happen. I can easily find all the folders (1949 of them) and the word match 3923 times within the text file(s)... Any ideas??? -- -Maurice Pelletier Child Development Services - Cumberland County 50 Depot Road Falmouth, ME 04105 207-781-8881 (voice) 207-781-8855 (fax) www.cds-cumberland.org "Linux -- it's not just for breakfast anymore..." -Moe

Hi Caobin, Our event will be in Fuller Laboratories in Upper Perrault Lecture Hall. Our School is at 100 Institute Road Worcester MA 01609. You may park in the parking lot on Boynton Street which is next to our library and Fuller Labs and across the street from a new, large residence hall. If you google maps 30 Boynton Street, Worcester MA 10609, you will be right across from where you can park and Fuller Labs is up a ramp to the north end of the lot. Hope to see you at the event, --Billy On Thu, Oct 1, 2009 at 3:07 PM, Caobin zhu <globecstar(a)hotmail.com> wrote: > Hi, > thank you for your info about the meeting.
