Adam Gomes found the same correkt solution I did. Thanks Adam. I could not find a utility to change the UUID of an NTFS partition. So I edited the boot sector of the partition. ACHTUNG! Editing the boot sector can cause loss of data and severe tire damage! You have been warned. % blkid | grep ntfs The partition I want to change is /dev/sdb14. % dd if=/dev/sdb14 of=superblockSDB14 bs=512 count=1 you can use a random-number generator to synthesize new UUID. Randy, In case you are curious about what's in that NTFS superblock, here's a great reference: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc781134(WS.10).aspx If you wanted instructions for editting that superblock, this is probably the simplest way: dd if=/dev/sda# of=block bs=512 count=1 ghexedit2 block (or what hex editor you like) dd if=block of=/dev/sda# bs=512 count=1 You may also want to keep a copy of the original block, just in case your modified block is not happy. The serial number is stored in the 8 bytes starting at offset 0x48. OR .... If you absolutely need to change the UUID, then you can always alter the superblock of the partition. This is a little scarry, though. The superblock is the first 512 bytes of the partition. You can edit it in the hex editor and the NTFS volume serial number should be in 0x48 to 0x4f. It's only 8 bytes long. Just alter a byte or two in that region, and you should have a new UUID. This is NOT for the faint of heart, though. ntfslabel /dev/sdaX LABELNAME and in /etc/rfstab change the /dev/sdaX or UUID= part of the line to LABEL=LALBELNAME That should do the trick. You may need to install a new package to get ntfslabel, in Ubuntu, that package is ntfsprogs. [OT]Seeing SCSI devices in Solaris

Hi All, This may a bit [OT], but ... At work we have several Sparc servers running Solaris 10u8 that are connected to storage arrays via fiber cables and switches. Some of these hosts can have thousands of connections and can take hours to boot! Does anyone know a way to view the scsi connections in Solaris? In RedHat, I can do a cat /proc/scsi/scsi and see the connections. How can I do this in Solaris? devfsadm doesn't seem to give me what I want, and Google doesn't provide too much help. TIA, -Chuck

Upcoming meetting reminder

We have a meeting coming up on Thursday, February 11th in that meeting room next to the Morgan Hall dining center. It is very close to the former Access Grid room where we used to meet. Our last meeting was rather lightly attended, perhaps because I didn't get the reminder out in enough time. I pulled together a talk about how I used libHaru to generate PDF output from a program that I wrote. I could bring in another program (Perl script) that I wrote to get data out of a ham radio related piece of test gear. It is the very first native Linux program in the world to talk to this device. I know because I asked for (and received!!!) a previously unpublished specification from the vendor. Sweet! I will be releasing this program under the GPL v3 shortly. I'm looking forward to seeing lots of people at the next meeting. Of course, we'll go out after the meeting for pizza and socializing. 201 CMR 17 - "Standards for the protection of personal information of residents of the Commonwealth" - takes effect March 1

Hello all, Just wanted to remind everyone that 201 CMR 17 takes effect March 1! If you're not familiar with this regulation, it specifies policies, procedures, and security requirements that are needed if you store a minimum of first initial and last name in conjunction with a social security number, drivers license/id number, financial account number (credit, debit, bank account number), or an access code or PIN/password that would allow access to a bank account. This doesn't just apply to companies that accept credit card payments. Think of it from an HR point of view as well. The problem no device maker wants to admit is that having a usb protrusion sticking out the side of a laptop is dangerous. The expresscard and sd card slots at least recess into the laptop for safety. Great idea, but it has an sd card reader built in! It's a lenovo s10, and I really like it.
