My ULTRA1 hard drives do not have a separate four pin power connector. That's the CD drive. Here's what one of my hard drives says: Seagate Barracuda Model ST32171WC It has a connector with about 76 pins. They are too small for me to count accurately. ---------------------------------------- I have decided to stick with my present installation of a 2004 Aurora package on my 3.2 Gig disk. I can mount my old Linux disk so I can get at the files I wish to preserve. I can even back them up. I think I can RPM some newer versions from the WEB. I have a brand new Fedora 12 Beta packages disk that refused to load. Checksum?? Gotta get Md5sum going... Thank you for all your support and tell me when you get a PDP10 or 11 working. Ken> Thanks, Chuck, for noting the two variations. Yeah, thanks. I know that a bunch of suns use the SCA connector. I think the Ultra 2 uses it for the two hot swap bays on the side. Ken> My ULTRA 1 has an oval connector with 68 (I did not count them) Ken> pins and a separate four wire power cord. Actually, now that I'm more aware (though heading to sleep soon!) my 36Gb disk has the 4 pin Molex for power, and the 68 pin SCSI3 connector. It's an LVD/SE, so it *might* work on your Sun Ultra 1. Oh yeah, the connector isn't oval like I quickly thought, it's more like this: -------------------------------- \ / \ / ---------------------------- So you should double check. I'd be happy to pass on the drive, not knowing whether it works or not though. I'm in Boylston. Though not around until later Sunday afternoon. The 68-pin ones are SCSI only, no power. Those drives use a separate 4-pin molex power connector. The 80-pin ones are known as SCA, Single Connector Attachment, and the extra pins provide power among other things (SCSI ID configuration pins). They are designed for hot-swap disk array shelves. -- - Chuck (291 Days until IPv4 depletion: http://ipv4depletion.com/)

Re: [Wlug] 232-TTL, locally?

by Tom Misilo

If you cannot find anything locally, I would recommend picking up this: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9718 It is a USB cable with a built in FTDI Chip. Very good support for Linux and Windows alike. They also make cables that can be found at www.mouser.com that do not have the 6pin .1 header, but bare tinned wires. Systems Administrator position available at TripAdvisor in Newton

TripAdvisor is looking for a mid- to senior-level Systems Administrator who will join a team of two systems administrators to support, maintain, and enhance a rapidly growing IT infrastructure that spans across the globe and serves roughly 350 employees worldwide. We are not your typical Windows / Active Directory / Exchange shop. Our servers are primarily Linux (CentOS) with a handful running Windows. We tend to prefer open solutions that we can take off the shelf and adapt to our needs, but we are not wedded to a particular OS or vendor. We aim for the solution that makes the most sense. We utilize Zimbra for mail, Asterisk for telephony, OpenLDAP instead of Active Directory, and Samba for our domain controllers and file sharing—all on Linux servers. To be successful in this role you will: - Have strong troubleshooting skills and a diagnostic intuition - Be a self-starter. If you don’t know how to do something you consider it a challenge to try to figure it out for yourself - Have a genuine desire to learn and expand your skill set You will have demonstrated experience with: - Linux systems administration (especially Red Hat variants) - Windows systems administration - Samba - OpenLDAP - Mail server administration - Server virtualization - Scripting (especially perl and bash) - Networking (especially Cisco PIX, ASA and IOS) Duties and Responsibilities include: - Racking and installing servers - Troubleshooting network and server hardware and software problems - Maintaining network infrastructure including switches and firewalls - Maintaining patch management and endpoint security - Assisting with SAN management - Handling escalated helpdesk support tickets - Participating in a 24x7 on-call emergency pager SAN administration experience is highly desired. I believe the UltraSPARCs were SCSI disks. You can probably find some of those on ebay real cheap. I could be wrong, though....and judging from the mails over the last few days I bet other people here will be able to correct that. Might as well take this time to introduce myself... My name is Justin St. Marie. I live in Worcester and have been using linux for years, but only for about a year professionally. I do what I can, but I am far from an expert in any *nix environment. I am a RHCT, hopefully able to pass the RHCE in a few months...we'll see... When is the next meeting? The website only said where it was, that I saw.
