Heck, I'd *give* you my two old 256Mb DDR 333 Mhz DIMMS if they'll work for you. I certainly won't be using them again. Ken> Red Hat and Fedora have gone their separate ways. In what way do you mean? I have successfully installed Fedora 6 Core. I included 'programming' services. It said that it would install SAMBA. It did not. System Services mentions the need for xinetd. 'Locate' finds 'xinetd' but it does not seem to run. smbd and nmbd are nowhere to be found. Sigh..... My machine only has 256M ram memory. The higher numbered FEDORA packages ask for more ram. I have a 'good' and never before used set of Fedora 6 .iso CD-ROMs. Red Hat and Fedora have gone their separate ways. I just found http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora_Core/6/html/Installation_Guide/i…. Looks promising. Little did I know how much has changed..... Constructive suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe I should jump to CORE 13 or so...... Ken Jones (the elder)

It definitely doesn't have any data on it. I tried multiple discs. Even if that were the case, shouldn't I have been able to burn it onto the DVD which was listed as having enough space? > Are you sure the disk is blank? Try mounting it, and try another disc to > burn on. > > Eric Martin

Why Fedora 6 when they're on 15 or 16? Is there something keeping you for updating it? Like Randy mentioned, there are probably a bunch of security holes that are now patched but weren't before. Due to a series of incidents too complex to detail here, I have just rebuilt a desktop PC with Fedora 6. All seems fine except it does not contain SAMBA - at least I can not find the SAMBA executable on the 5 disc .iso CD set. It has been at least five years. Fedora 15 and Burning CD

by dulsi＠identicalsoftware.com

I want to burn a copy of fedora 15 32-bit on a CD but my installed fedora 15 64-bit isn't letting me. When I put in a blank CD it tells me it has 137.8 MB free and won't let me select that as a burn destination. It shouldn't be 137.8 MB free as a blank CD has more space. To get it working I decided to try burning to a DVD. Space seems correct there but again it doesn't allow burning.

Robotics and linux

by Ken Jones

Thank you, Kevin, As you can see from my video I have built a state-machine-only robot out of a radio controlled model level car and an Arduino Nano programmed in ArduinoC_0021. The idea has been to interest middle school teachers and students in 'How things work' in 2011. Education must be relevant. My cars can race each other around a room. Speed, competition and the 'real world' makes relevance. Modify the code and win the race. My project has been going on for over a year. Recently it has been struggling. After watching a video of the 2012 Lexus parallel parking itself and realizing that it is doing some mapping, I thought I would investigate 'real' robotic code. ROS was suggested, but it does not seem the right fit. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Ken Jones

ROS Robot Operating System

by Kevin Harrington NR

A much easier to use alternative to ROS would be our platform, the DyIO and the Bowler Communication Sysrtem. We use a platform independent communication platform to turn any computer into a robot. WPI is now using these controllers as the basis for all the intro and advanced robotics engineering classes. You would write code in Java (Standard Edition), execute the application of any OS, and communicate to the DyIO for all your I/O needs. We have a ton or tutorials and HowTo's for accessing the different capabilities of the DyIO. If there was some interest i could run a seminar about making robots with Linux... -- Kevin Harrington Neuron Robotics President and Founder

ROS Robot Operating System

by Ken Jones

I have designed and built a robotic 1/10 scale radio control car (See link below). I added an Arduino Nano to a HPI Sprint. I have been using Windows based Arduino C code. This package is too limiting. I am considering getting into http://www.ros.org/wiki which is LINUX based. "ROS (Robot Operating System) provides libraries and tools to help software developers create robot applications. It provides hardware abstraction, device drivers, libraries, visualizers, message-passing, package management, and more." Are any of you WLUG members ROS-ites? My Linux skills have degraded due to lack of use (and old age). Here's a pointer to a youtube showing my robocar being a robot and what it is built of. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-rgkt8WDXQ Ken Jones Fitchburg

WLUG BBQ

by E Johnson

Hi everyone, The annual WLUG BBQ is tomorrow! Time & location & contact info has already been posted on the list. We have salad, cheese & crackers, plus a few extra goodies, & the condiments. Dogs, burgers & buns are allegedly arriving. So we expect the event to be enjoyable. A few news items & reminders: 1. We have been fairly bug-free this year, which still seems to be the case. But it is raining now, so, we'll know when we now. 2. Our Driveway is for deliveries (tables/chairs, coolers, etc., but not for Event Parking. There should be adequate parking on Hudson St. If you have a special Parking need, please let me know: iris.gates(a)gmail.com 3. We do not have an icemaker. Whoever is bringing the non-BYOB drinks (the soda), please bring cooler plus ice. If you BYOB, please provide your own cooling technique (cooler & ice) 4. My apt. is on the 3rd floor, so note that the Facilities are a few steps up. 5. Someone has promised to bring a table. That would be greatly useful. Perhaps a second table, even a small card table, would be helpful. 6. BYO lawn chair. 7. Wireless will be on & accessible, but I have not tested it in backyard. 8. If it rains or hails or otherwise becomes inclement, we can adjourn to my apt. Tall people may need a hardhat, but we can cram in. 9. Arts Worcester event is going on in Elm Park lately; there are a few things to see, should anyone wish to take a short walk. Elm Park is only a few steps away. 10. Sign on light pole out front will say WLUG. A Penguin is allegedly arriving, but no clue where he will be located. ## Who is bringing plates, cups, forks & spoons? Could you please check in here before Noon Wed. (my final shopping trip)? TY. See you tomorrow! Liz J

Hmm...hadn't heard of su-to-root before; thanks. Googling suggests it's a shell script, though it doesn't seem to be available on my Ubuntu karmic or the repositories. I did find something called sux which is an X-preserving wrapper around su. Alas, since I've disabled the root password, I can't use that. I'm a little surprised sudo doesn't have a way of doing this without security risks, since the maintainers are obviously aware of the issue and there's enough information in the environment to deduce the correct .Xauthority. Perhaps in the next release. Thanks for the reply, Ted
