To clarify Liz, Linked In doesn't have your email address. They have wlug(a)wlug.org, and that contact opened X hundred emails. Ppls contact info is not owned by whoever has the person in their Contacts list. Maybe a link could be added to the WLUG mailing list signup page, sending a proposed (requesting-to-join) WLUG mailing list member to a page stating Privacy policy (non-share contacts info). If a proposed (requesting) mailing list member must read Privacy policy, then agree (click Yes to Agree) before becoming a member of the mailing list, maybe it would prevent the idea that Contact lists can be so casually given away. It was sent to the wlug mailing list. My guess is somebody gave their address book to LinkedIn, the same thing happened with Facebook a few years back, IIRC (or was that on another mailing list?) Noooo! Did anyone else from WLUG receive this? If so, let's fix it. Please don't use the private WLUG mailing list contact info for invitations to social sites! Al, please delete me from your Contacts immediately. WLUG: maybe some kind of Privacy statement should be posted on the WLUG website (link on main page). That isn't how meetup works. People who desire to be a part of the meetup group would sign themselves up, just as they sign themselves up for this mailing list. There are no plans to retire this mailing list.

I am violently, foaming mad, opposed to the idea of giving that mailing list to any third party. This includes Facebook, Yahoo, Google, as well as meetup.com, which I have never heard of. What advantage could there possibly be? If somebody wants to plant a pointer to the WLUG web page there, or most anywhere else, then go ahead. I can't stop you and I don't want to try. -- Keith

by Henrique

Hey, Yesterday I was browsing around Meetup.com, and found another group called Worcester Web Technology <http://www.meetup.com/Worcester-Web-Technology/>, and they are also meeting at WPI, apparently on the third Thursday of every month. (today) I recommend WLUG also create a meetup group for attracting new members. Also Meetup is nice for sending out reminder emails about the meetings on the day before. Cheers, Henrique "nican" Polido.

Ceph

by Jason Couture

Has anyone here used ceph? I'm debating using it in a production cluster and would like input, alternatives, etc. Requirements: High availability, scales dynamically, fault tolerant, NO CODE CHANGES ( must appear as a posix compatible file system and be able to be mounted as such) nodes must be able to be added to the cluster at will. Prefer multi to multi copy for recovery (removed slow disk recovery bottleneck)

Vintage Computer Festival East 2012

by Evan Koblentz

Hello, I'm writing to user groups and hackerspaces to inform your members of a very unique upcoming event -- the Vintage Computer Festival East 8.0, May 5-6, in Wall, New Jersey. If you're not familiar with the Vintage Computer Festival, then please take a moment to keep reading .... The event is run by a user group called MARCH (Mid-Atlantic Retro Computing Hobbyists) of which I'm president. Each day of the weekend-long show contains lectures/workshops (in the morning) and an exhibit hall (in the afternoon.) This year's keynote speakers include Dartmouth's Dr. Thomas Kurtz, who co-invented BASIC (on Saturday) and Apple's Daniel Kottke (Steve Jobs' college buddy, India travel companion, Apple 1 board builder in Jobs' parent's garage, and Apple II/III/Mac engineer), on Sunday. Both days, in the afternoon, is our hands-on exhibit hall. Imagine an antique car show -- the cars are nice to look at, but you can't touch anything, and you certainly can't drive. Well, that is no fun at all! Our exhibitors are required to have their systems up and running for live demos all weekend! People can see minicomputers, punch card machines, teletypes, homebrew-era computers, 8-bit micros, etc., all live and running. The venue for our event is the InfoAge Science Center, which is a grassroots, all-volunteer, non-profit facility. It contains a computer museum (run by my user group), along with museums for antique radio/TV, shipwrecks, military communications, amateur radio, etc. -- all operated by independent clubs. Best of all, our event is dirt-cheap to get in. Adult tickets are just $10 a day and $15 for the weekend. Kids are admitted for free. Proceeds benefit our museum, which is strictly educational in nature -- we're all volunteers. In fact, we all lament that our jobs and families interfere with our volunteer time. :) Details are frequently updated at http://www.vintage.org/2012/east/ and http://www.facebook.com/vcfeast8. We'd be very grateful if you could share this announcement with your group members. People attend the Vintage Computer Festival East from all around the U.S. and even from other countries and continents. For now, however, we're reaching out to our fellow user groups around the northeast and mid-Atlantic. Thank you, - Evan Koblentz (evan(a)snarc.net, cell: 646-546-9999)

Could someone walk me through building a 3 machine postgres cluster with automatic fail over? I've searched and searched and I'm just not getting it.
