Hi Brett, First off, CMOS checksum errors during boot refer to MEMORY not the BIOS. Also almost all your symptoms point to a possible memory issue. Do Chuck's stuff to verify that you don't have a power drain that's causing a memory issue. Get a Memory Test utility and find out which DIMM is causing the problem. Carefully remove the DIMM and using a #2 pencil eraser, clean the contacts and replace the DIMM (The rubber removes oxidation that prevents contact) and don't forget to keep grounded! (You, not the DIMM). Hi, I'm trying to diagnose a home built PC running fine since 2007 but lately starting to act odd. Immediately suspected the CMOS battery, replaced it and reset CMOS settings but I continue to see this. This is the one symptom that I can't yet place, unless it's simply a bad replacement battery. 2) next started seeing the monitor fail to wake up after entering power save 3) powering on the PC shows issues: 3a) often the monitor won't wake at boot 3b) the bios often doesn't finish POST, gets stuck at splash screen 3c) bios settings often don't survive across power cycles (possibly related to #1--battery issue?) 3d) bios doesn't always give the affirmative beep (likely same symptom as 3a, 3b) 3e) a cold power on or reset can take several "tries" before the system stays on. I.e. fans will spin up, then spin down, one to three times before staying on. When this happens it's pretty much guaranteed that it won't boot successfully. 4) system will freeze to user input while up. I.e. once I get Linux booted, as long as I disable monitor power save it will stay running for a while, but I observed it stopped responding to KB and mouse input earlier this morning. Here's what I've tried: a) reseated both DIMMs, reproduced issues; tried with just one DIMM, repro'd; tried other DIMM, repro'd b) reseated graphics card, repro'd; removed graphics card (now headless), repro'd problem 3e c) reseated CMOS battery (CR2032), repro'd d) pulled all non-essential cables and internal connections, including power and SATA cables from all drives, repro'd e) updated BIOS to latest version, repro'd Unfortunately I don't have another ATX power supply to try, but was thinking of buying one. I'm probably going to move to Tomato instead of DD-WRT, since I really want the ability to add internal hosts to my internal DNS without having to screw around with DNSmasq configurations all the time. I mostly do static IPs at home, except for the phones and other mobile devices... I just found that DD-WRT was sucky from a management perspective. But I liked having dual radio router doing all the work, instead of two seperate devices. John

Jeff, thanks for the input on the SB6121. John, sorry to hear of the demise of your router. I have one of the newer Netgear routers here, running TomatoUSB. Very nice. It took 4 hands to do the magical reset after installing the software. but it's been solid after that. Generally, service & line issues (Charter in town here): I immediately notice line issues (when they happen) because I use an internet telephone quite often. That's one reason I like to see the modem logs. T3 and T4 timeouts might not be noticed if one is surfing the web. People streaming video might see a momentary glitch, maybe. Gamers definitely notice issues in their lines. It's not the available upload/download speeds that make the difference, it's the ping times & momentary glitches that cause packts to arrive or leave out of order, or requests & replies having to be resubmitted. Those were problems I had to address with the Charter techs at two different addresses. Line issues at the last place took me 4 years to resolve. Charter was good to me (rebates when I could prove their end caused the problems), and the techs that came out were generally okay, but didn't always know what they were doing. A lot of them pretty much just know how to measure an incoming signal, and if necessary, put a ladder up the pole & measure there... and how to plug in a modem & call the office for registration & provisioning. Other, more experienced techs would sometimes look at printouts of traceroutes, and recognize where the glitch in the system is. I think these guys are being phased out. But the internet service is generally very good. I checked again with Charter. The 3 techs who told me I'm not "allowed" to own my own modem were wrong, or misinformed, or whatever. Totally Wrong. Just thought I'd chime in... I have had Charter for 12+ years and only had a total of 3 outages that were more than a few hours. Dealing with customer support is usually a pain, but I try to get to a technical person by telling them I've already tried the steps as they go down their list. I bought my AMBIT 60678EU modem in 2002 from Charter, and has been good (if not solid) for most of the last 10 years. Lately I could not get a single stream downloads of > 300KB/s (SCP, peer-to-peer, etc) but speedtest would show I had 10+Mbps available. I figured the DOCSIS 2.0 and the age of that modem could be a problem so I decided to upgraded last month to a SB6121 and get the 30Mbps service. I bought the SB6121 myself and called charter to activate it. Once we go the MAC correct, and reset the modem it was up and working. Only took about 15 minutes to get up and running... including the time to "reboot my PC" which was included in their instructions. The new SB6121 has been rock solid for me and I get 4+MB/s downloads and reports of 30-45 Mbps from speedtest. Charter does let you buy your own modem and activate it but you have to call in to tech support... I found Charter's instructions for "activating" a new modem bu the web page does not work around here. I haven't heard if the SB6121 has the same sensitivity to hot power levels or not. I'm still reading reviews and forum posts about this unit. I can report on it once I get one in here and running. That happened to me, and the modem had to be re-registered two or three times. It depends on the tech you talk to. My modem was incorrectly or incompletely registered here by the install tach on the day the service was hooked up. The internet generally worked as it should anyway, but during times when there were connectivity problems here (see below), in phone calls to tech support, every once in a while the tech would tell me "I" had the wrong MAC address, that I was running an unauthorized modem, etc.. Then I would have to explain why that seemed to be, and they would try again to get that corrected. My history here: Charter here needs a DOCSYS3-compliant modem. I was running a Motorola SB6120, which worked fine for 27 months. This has several nice diagnostic pages, accessed at 192.168.100.1, including logs which give details of any exceptions and error messages. Connectivity problems in summer of 2010 were caused by new lines (coax) from the pole to the box. I was able to prove to the provider that the intermittant problems were not in my setup, but outside. There were several issues, which they gradually seemed to fix. One had to do with connectivity interruptions on the days following a big rainstorm. The connectors in the new lines (at the pole) had not been weatherproofed, which they did. Line techs eventually checked and improved the weatherproofing throughout the whole neighborhood. Note that I have no other services (such as TV) which run on the incoming line. Also note: I have no extra connectors in the coax running between the box and my modem. The sick modem I experienced here a few weeks ago may have simply been due to a failing power supply (wall wart) running the modem. Somehow that had never occurred to me. I could have tested that by replacing it with an equivalent new power supply. Meanwhile 2 Charter techs had diagnosed my modem as 'dying', shook their heads when they learned it was 2+ years old, replaced it with one of theirs, and left. This is a Cisco, which sounded reasonable to me. But there is only one page available to customers, at 192.168.100.1 and this only shows that the modem is connected, a few power levels, SNR, how many channels are running. Further diagnostic pages can be accessed through a password, but the usual logins and passwords don't work. My ultimate solution is to get another modem which I will own and have provisioned when I set it up. The one I'm planning to get is the Motorola SB 6121, their replacement for the 6120, which they no longer manufacture. A further note on the SB6120, in case anyone gets one on ebay or whatever: These are very sensitive to incoming power levels. If the signal is too "hot", such as 15 dBmV, they start throwing errors. These power levels seem to vary according to temperature and humidity. Once I installed a 3db attenuator pad between the incoming coax and my modem, the power levels the modem experienced came down to 10 or 12 dBmV, which allowed the modem to operate without interruption for many months at a time. I haven't heard if the SB6121 has the same sensitivity to hot power levels or not. I'm still reading reviews and forum posts about this unit. I can report on it once I get one in here and running. It will be nice to be able to see the diagnostics pages and service logs again. Liz

I bricked my WNDR3700v2 recently while trying to upgrade it to a newer version of DD-WRT, so I had to fall back quickly to my PCengines (http://pcengines.ch) based m0n0wall box to get the internet working. Since I munged the wrong MAC address into the m0n0wall, I sighed and called up charter. Make sure that you update the MAC address with charter, and that they actually update it. I've had a few problems where they haven't even though they said they did. Also, a lot of modems have diagnostic suites built in. An easy enough way to get at it is to turn it off, and unscrew the coax line. Now boot it up, and it won't get an IP from charter, but it should give your router an ip like 193.168.100.100, and the gateway should he something like 192.168.100.1 (check for specifics) but that gateway is your modem. Punch that IP into a browser and see what comes up, usually the password is something stupid, and a Google search will yield it if its not admin. Keep in mind you pulled the cable, so it will show that. Liz, I live in Clinton these days, where Verizon DSL and Comcast are the only options. Comcast is faster, but their monthly data caps made Verizon the better choice for me (not to mention my general distaste for cable companies). I recently had superficially similar problems. I went on freecycle and got someone's old DSL modem to swap for my own, to rule that out, but I got impatient and bought a new modem before I got the reply from freecycle. In any case, you probably can get another cable modem off freecycle for testing purposes. After the new modem didn't fix things, I finally called Verizon. They sent out a tech with a good "bedside" manner (he was friendly, seemed to know what he was talking about, and didn't talk down to me). He didn't find anything wrong with my signal, but he did notice the copper loop to my apartment was longer than necessary and cut down the excess at the pole. I haven't had any problems in the 2 months since. Thank you. That helps. For quite some time I had been trying to find good answers online about whether or not I need a UPS that has "pure sine wave" output, or not. The newer "active PFC" power supplies supposedly require this. That's what I have here in the latest build. I found one on sale & free shipping at newegg for a price that won't hurt too much. CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD UPS This has only 20 reviews now, but most of the owners seem to be happy. I think this should keep the periodic brownouts from unexpectedly corrupting data. Thanks again! If this is too verbose or vague, I apologize in advance. There is no easy selection process for a UPS. Everybody seems to have different opinions on UPSs and depending on who you talk to, all may be right,all may be wrong. I have a strong preference for APC UPSs, although all brands have their lemons. The unit I have and all the units at my work all beep on and off when there is a power outage. Most UPSs have a USB cable that provides status information for a automatic shutdown. I have not used it and although I have not looked in a long time, I have not seen anything written about Linux support with APC. I have a backup XS 900 for about 5 years with no problems. The only issue for me is that it has a small fan that runs all the time. I generally only hear it when things are very quiet . I intentionally went big to extend the life of the UPS by reducing stress on the battery and maintaining an acceptable power up time on outages when the battery degrades. Yes, the battery will degrade. One thing to keep in mind when shopping for a UPS is that VA (volt amps) is not the same as watts. My personal view is that when comparing UPSs of a good brand, compare them based on watts, not VA. Where I work, we use an APC 450 for just about every PC in the place (mostly office machines). Untill recently, the building would loose power about 3 times a year. I think the battery typicaly lasts about 3 years before they need replacement. If you want to check the power usage of your computer, you may want to use a "kill a watt" or similiar device to measure the power usage, both steady state and possibly when turning the PC on. I will assume the actual power usage will be in the ballpark of 200W for the computer and reasonable monitor (light to moderate loaded cpu). Thanks, Eric. That would work for the modem, but the computer(s) are across the room. I'm worried about the computers. Recenely had some invisible power event that seemed to crunch something in my most-important software. Had to do various softeware reinstalls, or re-specify preferences every time the power went out here, and sometimes have to do that anyway. I think I need a UPC that will deliver even voltage to the PCs here. I think I need to get one with active pfc (power factor corrected), but wanted to know if that was appropriate for my power supply, plus would run the AMD FX4100 processor & motherboard. And the router, so that doesn't need to suffer from power dips any more. I have a power strip style ups you can have, it just needs a new battery. Need recommendation on UPs for small home network.

Today and the other day we discussed my issues with a modem declared-dead by twin techs from my ISP. Part of that problem may have been caused by bad elex service here. I need a recommendation for a UPS to use here. We have dirty elex here in this 112 year-old central Worcester house, & inadequate amperage to my floor (top floor garret). Refrig runs on same circuit as my computers do. Lights dim when something downstairs also turns on, probably a microwave oven and/or a TV. This won't be fixed any time soon unless the landlady suddenly becomes a benefactress of the Gate$ Foundation, which will never happen. I could sometime get an electrician in here to add a suitable circuit for my floor, but it would be faster & better just to get an UPS, whether or not the elex here is ever upgraded. UPS here would only need to run max 2 PCs plus their monitors, one modem and router & a light bulb or two. Really needs to run only one. The primary PC here is mine, which has a 450W power supply running a 95W AMD FX4100 quad (bulldozer) no vid card. Antec Sonata II case has 2 fans. Mobo is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157292 Built June 2012. Works great. The other PC is a few years older; similar, but usually don't care if it shuts down in power outage or not. I need UPS to beep audibly in a power outage, but only need maybe 5 minutes to light a candle, go to office, save whatever is not saved & Halt. Otherwise just need UPS to smooth out the fluctuating elex here. I'm not clear from newegg or any vendor, which kind of UPS I need to get for this small home setup. Thanks, Karl. This makes sense. Why didn't I think of that! We have inadequate elex here which dips & dims lights frequently. Had sudden power outages a few times, including one very recently. I am not piping the modem logs anywhere; only check this if I notice an obvious problem. Results: Non available. Case (Motorola SB 6120) has only 2 screws, hex, 2 different sizes. No problem. Backplate then comes off & that's it. Nothing else to undo except whet seem to be clips, but we have no prybar tiny & thin enough to pry up these clip things. Case appears uncrackable, execpt maybe by dropping it from an airplane onto solid concrete. However. If it's only the power supply, I could test this by simply replacing the wall wart with an equivalent one from anywhere. Then I'd have to get the ISP to reprovision it, then watch to see if it worked any better after that. I do have an update from Ch4rter business office, which is relevant to my original beef with this ISP. Yesterday afternoon, I followed up by calling the business office, to ask why they changed their policy on what networking components their customers can or cannot own and administer themselves. The last person I spoke with said I am "grandfathered-in" to be allowed to own & run my own modem, since my account was opened before July, 2012 when the new poilcy was instituted (I'm a customer since there was something other than dial-up). Biz office says these techs who came to see me Thursday simply had "inadequate training" or "incorrect information" from their own supervisors. Both techs did look not older than about 3 days over 19. For the trouble call, I was promised a sup-tech & maybe one of these was, but only sup-ing the second guy how to open cardboard boxes of modems, smile at geekly grannies, & maybe how to drive the van. This modem is not in warranty & no longer manufactured (mine 2+ years old). But Motorola tech support confirmed that any old power supply 12V, 0.76A would run it. I'll borrow a power supply from somewhere, then try this thing one more time here before Responsibly Disposing of it by donating to a worthy friend's parts bin. Sounds more like the power supply is taking it's time to die. As the power level dips thats where your errors/reboots are popping up. Easiest thing to verify is 1.) Turn off the modem and unplug. 2.) Remove case and inspect the board. 3.) If the board's solder connections look like there are not good connections ANYWHERE on the board then you probably have a bad solder issue, if the solder looks good, it's probably a power supply on the board problem which is a chip. 4.) PS: This evening, Ch4rter Billing has deleted the upcoming service charge for this morning's tech call. Amazing how it took 2 guys to check line levels, then hang one moden where my other modem was, + plug in one coax & one wall wart , then make 30-sec call to the office to get their repacement modem provisioned & watch for blinking green lights. 2 guys. Test needed on declared-ill Modem. Who has a lab?

Umm. Non-happy camper. ISP things have changed here, without me being informed. Recently (2 days ago) my modem started rebooting every little while. Zillions of T3 & T4 timouts in the modem log, Signal lavels were perfect when it was online. I own this thing, a Motorola SB6120 purchased late June 2010. It has not been abused. I am in Woosta & we all know the ISP available here. 2 techs showed up mid-morning, to diagnose and fix this issue. One guy stood there watching; the other guy "did stuff." They checked the signal levels on incoming line from the box connected to the pole our back, and declared my moden Dying. They talked to each other (not me) & seemed to think I was Granny-in-a-Box, until they let me say more than one sentence. These guys also confessed that since July 202, Ch4rter does not "allow" customers to own/run their own modems. Their consolation prize is that they don't charge modem rental fees any more. (it's not on the bill, anyway, FWIW). They mumbled some other mumbo jumbo and fled 5 seconds after they learned I have my own router too, & didn't care if the modem and router were yet in communication. They just said "better reboot" and they "no longer" service "wireless" --which I am not running except when certain visitors appear. I think they meant they don't diagnose routers, which has always been the policy, and which is fine. Internal LAN issues aren't their problem. So now I have a modem which may or may not be sick, but no way to test it to make sure. Is there anyone here who can take a look at this thing & test to see if it's Really Dying, or if Ch4rter deaded it with their latest firmware revision of their firmware & policy change in July 2012? An interesting meeting theme sometime might be how to get the Verizon FIOS in Worcester. Several years ago I watched Verizon trucks & Verizon moles installing their fiber optics in manholes all over town. Ch4rter is running on Verizon's infrastructure. Ch4rter internet has been working better since then, but we're still locked out of the option to use verizon. Is this a topic of interest to anyone?
