The 3rd annual Northeast Linux Fest

Hello, I would like to annouce the 3rd annual Northeast Linux Fest. It will be on March 16 and 17 at Harvard University in the Science building. If you are new to Linux or a seasoned veteran this is the place for you. We will have speakers from Red Hat teaching you how to leverage virtualization using Openshift and KVM. The Fedora distribution will have their own track giving talks on all things Fedora. John Sullivan from the Free Software Foundation will be there also. Jon 'Maddog" Hall who has been there from the start of it all will be giving the keynote. We also will have an all day class for new Linux users. Great idea. I put that in as the topic for next month on the website and IRC channel. We may be able to use HDMI out on phones/tablets to the projector, or use a document camera (the modern replacement for the overhead projector). Idea for next month's WLUG meeting....

Over pizza last night I had a WLUG meeting idea I thought I would share with the group. Seems many WLUG members have Android phones and tablets. How about a show & tell about each of our favorite Android applications? Android is Linux-based so it is somewhat relevent to our group. I am not sure how we can "show these" up on a big screen but a laptop could easily go to the web page (or developer's page) via browser might work. I am happy to contribute my 5 to 10 favorites in the Android App world. Sharing these in this e-mail group might make sense also if people so choose. Anyone else have thoughts on this topic? Announce: WLUG Meeting Wed 2/13 7PM More Raspberry Pi

Hi folks, The next Worcester Linux Users' Group (WLUG) meeting will be held at its regularly scheduled time: the 2nd Wednesday of the month, which is tomorrow, Wednesday, February 13, at 7PM. The location will be the WPI Campus Center, Mid-Centry Room 331, which should hopefully become our regular location. If people would like, I can bring my new Raspberry Pi to play with. I might even have a case for it by then. I have installed a distro called OpenELEC which is an XBMC port, but we can play with other distros as well, especially if people bring some spare SD cards they don't mind erasing. Bill> No joy. That didn't do it, unless I need to reboot something. Works for me on a RHEL5.5 box. I took one of my users, changed his home directory and put it into /etc/passwd on the local system. sudo su - <user> put me into the new home dir, just like I expected. I have: passwd: files nis in /etc/nsswitch.conf What do you see on your RHEL5.3 box when you do: getent passwd <user> that will tell you also. Also, make sure you bouce the nscd daemon, it might be caching the old entries. John
