Video Editing

by dulsi＠identicalsoftware.com

Anyone do any video editing? I've tried using pitivi to edit videos. It usually crashed. Recently I tried putting a series of images in and creating a video. I successfully created a video once. Now everytime I seem to create a file without any video content. The video isn't going to be long or good. I was showing my son how lego stop animation is done. I only did a 8 images and they aren't perfectly aligned. I used a small tripod but press the picture button must have moved the camera a bit. Probably need to use video and screen capture images so I don't touch the camera. The images also have slightly different light levels. If anyone has suggestions on fixing the images to be consistent let me know.

Announce: UPDATE: WLUG Meeting Thu 2/20 7PM: Software Defined Radio

by Chuck Anderson

Hi folks, Due to the weather this week, I've rescheduled this month's WLUG meeting for the following week, Thursday, February 20 at 7:00 PM, in the WPI Campus Center, Hagglund Room 301. Our speaker this month will be Andy Stewart, who founded WLUG in 1997 and now runs the Chelmsford Linux Meetup. Andy plans to talk about software defined radio on Linux, and with luck, do a live demonstration of gqrx: http://gqrx.dk/ If there is time, Andy *might* be able to show something related to the GNU Radio Companion, where one can build a software defined radio just by drawing the blocks and connecting them with lines. Thursday, February 20, 7:00 - 9:00 PM WPI Campus Center, Hagglund Room 301 This room is the one across the hall from our usual room, and is where we had the meeting with Jim Getty's on Bufferbloat. After the meeting, we will go out for pizza. See you there, Chuck President, Worcester Linux Users' Group http://www.wlug.org/

Consider not only what the weather will be at the start of the meeting, but at the end when folks are departing. Sometimes you get burned when the predicted weather fails to materialize, but that's life in New England. It beats sleeping all night in The Wedge. ;-) I am looking forward to giving the software defined radio talk to WLUG, and if the meeting is postponed, there is a high likelyhood that I could reschedule with you on some other Thursday evening. The weather people (who are using super computers running linux) are currently claiming that we're going to be getting heavy snow on Thursday night. I don't think WLUG has ever had this scenario... Next Meeting: Thursday Feb 13 in Harrington Forkey Conference Room

by Chuck Anderson

All meetings for 2014 are scheduled for the 2nd Thursday of each month. So the next one is Feb 13. The location just for this month is different due to a scheduling conflict. This month, the meeting will be held in: Harrington Auditorium, Forkey Conference Room 209 To find this room, go to the northwest end of the Quad, where the new Recreation Center meets Harrington Auditorium. There is an exterior door on the far left front corner of Harrington (not the main doors in the center of the front), just to the right of the stairway that leads down to the new Park Ave Garage. Go in that door, and straight ahead down the hallway leads to the Forkey Conference Room. In fact, you can probably safely park in the visitor's parking spaces around the edge of the Park Ave Garage, and walk up the stairway between Rec Center and Harrington to the Quad level, and the correct door will be around the corner on your left. I would like to see someone talk about Software Defined Radio if there is someone willing... Home backup solutions is always a good topic... [Super] 8mm Film to Video

by Larry Camilli

When I looked into this several months ago (because I, too, have a pile of old home movies), I discovered: The frame rates of film and video do not divide evenly. So, to get the video to flow at the same rate as the film, extra copies of frames are inserted here and there - at regular, but odd intervals. [I wonder if, on a computer, you could set the video refresh rate and video frame rate to something that would work for the original film frame rate.] There are some relatively cheap set-ups available to project a film on a small screen and video-record it. I can't imagine that the quality would be better than horrible. With the incompatible frame rates, how bad would the flicker be? I vaguely recall that you have to provide the projector and camera. Those once ubiquitous Kodak Instamatic projectors are famous for having brittle plastic gears. I have two such projectors; both broken. [They worked when stored 30 years ago. When I fired each up, little bits of plastic gear went flying.] There is a company I found on the web that provides instructions and parts to restore these things, but... I would think that trying to run an old film through a projector - with the jerky motion necessary to get each frame stationary in the gate when the shutter opens - risks shredding the film. Non-linear scanning at low speed sounds safer. Googling, I found a web site by some guy who was working on his own transfer mechanism. He was using a scanner with fine-enough resolution that he thought it would be OK for such tiny pictures. And, he rigged up some mechanical device to automatically advance the film some number of frames at a time and scan a group of frames. -And, he was working on some software to separate the frames and adjust them so that they're aligned (based on the sprocket holes) because the mechanism couldn't possibly align the frames on the scanner well enough. I'll see if I can find the site again. I wonder if there's pent-up demand for transfer services because the prices are so high. I had hoped to find a co-op or non-profit. But, commercial transfer equipment is so expensive, even a non-profit would have to charge a lot to break even. -Maybe a charitable organization interested in preserving old film and Americana would do it on the cheap? Or, a small number of people buying a (used) $1000 telecine machine could split the cost and take turns... ...and sell it when done? I would think that it'll be worth looking over the films carefully and deciding which are really worth transferring. [I used a microfiche reader to look at a few of mine. It was extremely awkward.] Some of the the companies in/near Boston allow you to use their equipment for free to view your movies. And, there are old viewers (hand-cranked, for editing) around... http://www.thebattles.net/video/8mm_restoration.html http://photo.net/video-forum/003WXX http://vimeo.com/22015773
