help with CentOS webserver

last-minute BBQ status

ZFS Fun!

During my talk, I spoke briefly about upgrading one of my machines from 3TB disks to 4TB disks. Here's a "zfs status" output (obviously with some critical details scrubbed) This is a raid 60 (4, 8 disk raid 6's). I'm replacing 4 disks, one from each of the strip sets. What I captured this output I'd just put in the fourth disk. So that 252h is now down to 15h, and likely soon it'll be even lower. Obviously, I/O load on the subsystem will cause this to stretch out. Flat screen monitor 19" needs fixit; free to good home

The power went out here twice today. After the second event, monitor seems to have died. This is an Acer monitor, several years old. Black(ish) bezel; not glossy. Flat screen, I think 19" diagonal. Has been a very nice reliable monitor during its working life. Has choice of DVI input or the older kind of data connection, whatever that used to be. This specific batch of Acer monitors had used a type of capacitor which is known to have a higher-than-usual failure rate, and this is PROBABLY what it needs. Had a twin of this that fryolated same way 2 years ago, and a WLUG member came by & reported shortly after that he got it up & running with just the replacement of bad caps. This monitor has been very steady and reliable until this afternoon, with nice display and no dead pixels, ever. So if you are handy with electronics fixits, capacitors are cheap and you could probably get this working again with only a screwdriver, a soldering iron and a little bit of fiddling. Might be nice for the kid's playroom or the back office, or something. I don't know how nice games look on this monitor, since I don't do gaming. Videos always looked perfectly fine with good color. WLUG bbq thurs july9 7pm boylston MA

Announcing (with Tim's blessing/OK) our next meeting is the WLUG summer BBQ at my house ; 540 linden st, boylston ma. <= 20min from worc via 290, .....so many other ways to get here from north/190 ; east/495, etc. Thurs July 9 at or before 7pm. Food details later. BBQ's don't need a topic, but I would love to keep doing+learning a LITTLE with -- freeNAS : my own home server works enough to NOT wanna break it, but smbd isnt working yet ( want to share with win doze) -- other ZFS-able boxes (e.g. my junker/re-loadable PC has pc-bsd with issues, want it to catch ZFS snapshots over ssh for backups ..how hard could that be?) -- chainsaws, musical instruments, tricks+treats for golden retrievers and a cat (just kidding for the meeting, but now you know way too much about me) Maybe someone else wants to bring a tower/PC for abuse or argument e.g. loading something like the above top 2, then studying the result. Or not? What did I forget besides food? -doug also with wife's blessing, if I do all the work.

There are several open source Minecraft like games. Minetest is available for Fedora. Voxelands is a fork from it. Terasology is a more impressive looking minecraft like game. I wonder if you could create a usb live boot which runs one of those. You would avoid having to worry about the security of their windows. (I've only tried minetest. It lacks monsters by default so you might need some mods or something to make the games interesting.)

I assume your grandson would be playing on a "safe" computer. Is the minecraft server hosted locally or on a remote server? Will it run on a "safe computer"? Would it just work to put a temporary router between your main router and the Internet source? What is the current topology of your network? Computers -> Linksys -> Cable Modem? I would just put an old router or computer set up as a router between your main one and the cable modem if that's an option: Safe Computers -> Linksys -> Old Router -> Cable Modem Unsafe Computers --WiFi/LAN----^ If this old router is a computer, you can even set up the minecraft server on it and then everybody, even the "Safe Computers" can access it. If not, you can port foward on the Linksys like in the tutorial: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Setting_up_a_server#Port_forwarding I would also set the "Linksys" to be the DMZ for the "Old Router" just so that any UPnP ports from the safe computers still get back to them. Or is it something like Computers -> FiOS Router/Modem? This would be a harder topology to do, but you can still set up a three layer network like: Safe Computers -> Linksys -> Old Router -> FiOS Router/Modem Unsafe Computers --WiFi/LAN----^ All of this would probably be pretty plug and play as long as you set the IP address of the routers to different subnets. Minecraft server security ...

Folks, My grandson wants to host a minecraft server party for his boy scout troop and my daughter and I are wondering how to ensure that the existing machines on her home network are not compromised given that the members of the troop will be bringing their own machinesand ethernet switchesalthough some may be running wireless. I was wondering if you could give us some thoughts on how to set up the network. It is my understanding that the minecraft clients do need to get out to the internet to obtain a valid player name. I had thought ofsetting up a seperate Router/Lan for the party, disconnecting the existing router/lan from the wan and connecting the minecraft router/lan to the wan for the duration of the party. Any thoughts out there? -David

When you use `*' on a command line, the shell does filename glob expansion; the results of the glob expansion become arguments (to ls, in this case).
