Never had jumping mouse that I recall. My (new) PC using a little KingWin mouse (no longer available); "old" PC using old Logitek; have used other Logitech including one that's now connected to the laptop (the one I could not post /var/log/messages for). Daughter PC using Logitech mouse since her light-up one died. These Logitech mouse are low-end, 3 buttons. Two are identical, that can work I believe a 5-button. Can get mfr part numbers if needed. Keyboards are miscellaneous, mainly slim-type, inexpensive Rosewill (Newegg's own brand) which these seem to be mfr by "Chesen." Can get mfr part numbers if needed. Will try the newer kernel per J. R. Mauro suggestion & check back in. Ive noticed that logitech mice seem to have strange issues with linux, Example i have a wireless logitech USB Mouse and keyboard, And every so often the mouse freaks out and jumps all over the screen clicks on things while it does and then returns to normal. Next time it happens ill post a copy of /var/log/messages pertaining to the issue, Perhaps your issue is related? Sorry, didn't see you already had given version/distro info. See if you can upgrade to a more recent kernel; tons of issues with the input layer were fixed between .24/.26 and now. Other advice: ensure that evdev is the driver being used. Other than that, it could be hardware issues. P.S. I would recommend .28 as I don't think .29 is incredibly stable. Is it normal for USB to disconnct/reconnect repeatedly, many times per minute? Is that still considered random and normal? That's what we have here, in the three different computers that I have access to today. Not a few times, but zillions of lines in /var/log/messages. It's worst in the older PC. The mice mostly have been pretty standard Logitek versions, nothing fancy or unusual. How can I find out if the lockup is caused by "X fighting over the hardware", or by drivers? Keyboard and mouse repeatedly disconnect/reconnect

Tonight I am being reminded several times per hour that something weird is happening here. I have a mouse and keyboard USB disconnect problem that has been hanging around for a couple of years now. Across the room where my old computer sits quietly running, the red light in the mouse keeps flashing as it goes off then comes back on, even though this computer is idle. So I checked /var/log/messages, and sure enough, messages appear there that correspond with the times the red light flashes. Keyboard and/or mouse would no longer accept input, forcing me to have to ssh in and reboot it, or if I couldn't do that, had to hard reboot. Restart X is not enough to fix this. This has happened with various different mice and keyboards. So we installed a USB card, thinking this might be a hardware problem with the USB ports, but no, the same problem crops up no matter if the mouse or keyboard is plugged into the card, or into the USB ports in the case. Then we thought it might be a problem in Etch, so we upgraded to Lenny. But it still happens. Also happens in Ubuntu. The latest issue (see below) was a long string of these disconnect/reconnects, then a lockup of the mouse and I believe keyboard. Had to ssh in to stop the problem (by shutting down). This new build is using my used hard drive, but I don't think that is relevant. Below is only a small piece of var/log/messages, where the problem seemed to change after several hours from the familiar mouse disconnect/reconnect, to something else. This PC is only a few weeks old, now with a fresh install of Lenny in its own partition. Only the hard drive and the DVD drive are not brand-new. I possibly (maybe?) solved the keyboard issue in this PC by specifying the correct type of keyboard in Settings > Peripherals > Keboard (in KDE). Not sure if it's really gone or not. But now getting hundreds of messages about the mouse, as above. Computer 3. It's also happening in my daughter's computer, that has the exact same motherboard and almost the same CPU as computer 2. Hers is running Ubuntu 8.04 2.6.24-23.52 (running Gnome), just updated last week. She has never complained about any lockup problem, but she reboots more often than I do.
