If the pinout is the same, why not just run the 850 at 600? Then you won't have to trade chips. You can always run slower, just not faster. Good luck! -Malcolm Stephen C. Charter & servers?

Does anyone have any experience with Charter cable checking up on services? I have a couple of ssh holes in my firewall, which has not caused any trouble. Now, I'm considering hosting a very low bandwidth web site, but I'm concerned about Charter doing some port scanning and deciding that I'm doing something wrong. More detail... I'm involved with planning a summer camp for the Boy Scouts, and I think that bugzilla would be a great way to help track the myriad of tasks with the multiple volunteers. I'd probably set it up for SSL only. As an alternative, I could just set the few users up with ssh access & teach them how to set up port forwarding, but some of these guys have only MS experience. (Does the windows ssh support port forwarding?) Opinions? TIA, Bill

So here is the sad and embarrassing story... It began at Christmastime when my father-in-law decided to give me two CPU upgrades and a bunch of memory. To make a very long and sad story shorter, the PIII 850 MHz CPU I got is not compatible with my motherboard (an Intel SE2, specifically 720-series). So, I have a PIII 850 I can't use and was wondering if anyone would like to swap a PIII 550 or 600 MHz for the PIII 850. Yes, you read correctly, I am willing to trade down! Overall, they have done a great job! No outages once they got rid of their initial subcontractor. There have only been two outages I can remember in well over a year, and they were planned. I received email a couple of weeks prior to the outage and the service is back up when they predicted. Verizon is the ILEC (Incumbent local exchange carrier) for this area and I think that there can only be one ILEC. The other companies are the CLECs (Competitive local exchange carrier). Personally I do not know about any CLECs for "local" phone service in this area but I have never sought them out ether. Nationwide there have been a few start-up CLECs for local service after the deregulation of the telecommunications industry but only a few of them survived (same with the dsl providers). They all faced the same problem of needing to use the ILEC's premises and wires. Although the deregulation process required the ILECs to allow this it didn't stop them from making it difficult for the new CLECs often times pushing court cases for such a time that the start-up went out of business before it could actually start up. If Verizon doesn't offer DSL, I don't think anybody else can (they use Verizon premises and equipment). On the other hand I do live in Shrewsbury and over all like the service very much. If you have cable service the cost with a modem was $45 for a 100k up load and 512k (64KB) down load limit. I feel that in practice the net doesn't offer much more speed than that most of the time unless the conditions are perfect and it is a large down load. Surfing pages, email, etc won't see a faster speed than that. So I don't feel that the limitation is all that significant. (other people with known faster potential connections my rebut this to add to my experience!). As far as the 2 gig limit I am willing to bet that I exceed this but I have never heard from them about it. Granted I do follow the rules about not running services on the system but I do have 5 systems behind a firewall along with a wireless network for my notebook. As far as the service it is rarely down. A few planned outages (early in the AM) for upgrades and maintenance is about it. Everything does work well. I would take the service over a modem any day and have no problems compared to people that I know with Verizon DSL (even SNET for that matter in CT which is also a PPPOE connection). (off topic) high speed internet access in shrewsbury

Hi, I apologize for my slightly off topic question. But I need help on this subject. I want to have high speed internet access that I can use with linux without any problems. I mean I don't want to use PPPoE, if possible. I live in Shrewsbury. Unfortunately verizon can not afford 'dsl'izing our telephone line. (strange that my next door qualifies for DSL while we can not) I am thinking of switching my local phone line provider, perhaps another company may provide DSL on my telephone line? Am I correct? Or if verizon cannot do it, none of them can do it?
