Meeting Thursday August 11th 2022! Topic: "Infrastructure as Code website with free hosting"

by Tim Keller

Hey Everybody, We've got a meeting on Thursday August 11th 2022 Topic: Infrastructure as Code website with free hosting. Physical Location: Possibly the Mid-Century Room at WPI! Virtual Location: https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA Speaker: Althea Shaheen The days of websites simply being static pages of HTML are behind us. As the web changes and the technologies underpinning complex websites grow and evolve, managing all this by hand becomes nearly impossible. Load balancers, database servers.. Now what if this website also needs to be scaled across cloud providers and on prem? What happens when your favorite cloud company whose data center is just a bunch of shipping containers burns to the ground? How easily could you reconstitute your website and all the underpinnings? Althea is going to speak to how they deploy their website and manages the entire process as code. I'd like to thank Chuck for facilitating getting Althea in contact with us. If you know people who'd like to speak, please let me know. Yes, it's quite possible we'll be able to meet in our old haunt. When I know more, you'll know more! Unfortunately as I've been in close contact with someone with covid, I'll be unable to make it physically to the meeting, but I will be attending virtually. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Re: Dell Inspiron Linux Install saga

by John Stoffel

Keith, Just a heads up, but editing Video is a very memory and cpu hungry task. I've tried it on and off for years on my Linux systems using various tools and it was always a chore. I've tried 'openshot' in the past, and in the way way past I tried 'cinelerra', but it was pretty bad then. I think I tried 'kedenlive' as well. But I'm honestly not a good video editor and it was frustrating on an under-powered system. But these days might be better, especially if you are using a more bleeding edge linux distro like Fedora or Ubuntu or Linux Mint. Try looking at this page and see what you can get installed that's newer. https://filmora.wondershare.com/video-editor/free-linux-video-editor.html John

Pitivi can certainly do that. It's probably easier with a command line tool. Pitivi gives you a timeline with multiple layers. So you can do more complicated editing than just combining two videos. For example for the kickstarter video I have a section with me talking while Robotron: 2084 from the Atari 7800 is running in a section of the screen. Now that it doesn't crash every few seconds it is a great tool. > You can read about my most recent Linux project at: > > http://www.free-comp-shop.com/none/dumpster.html > > Scroll down to see the latest news. > I am trying to install Linux on a recycled Dell laptop. Part of the reason I started updating Mojotron was to run on a home built arcade machine which uses an old computer. Probably the only arcade machine in the world running only open source games. (I recently picked up a free monitor and TV thinking maybe I can build another one.) > -- Dennis Payne dulsi(a)identicalsoftware.com https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@dulsi

Dell Inspiron Linux Install saga

BCC:DAKA Dennis Payne via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> writes: > Mojotron is a twin stick shooter similar to Robotron: 2084 or Llamatron. I do not know what is a twin stick shooter, nor any of those capitalized names. NB: When I say I don't know, it does not imply that I want to know. If you try to explain it to me, I will explain to you the importance of distinguishing (extensional) identity judgements from from (intensional) equality propositions in a type-theoretic formal semantics of hygienic macro expansion. > I've been redoing the graphics and fixing up the game. I don't need to make a video, but I could use a simple light-weight program to cut and splice *.mpg or *.wmv files, like what used to be done with a jig, razor, and sticky tape. Any recomendations? Dennis Payne via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> writes: > This video had a larger purpose behind it. I've been wondering about that. You said "open source". Why didn't you say that first? I thought it might be just scatter-shot marketing. It's a WLUG relevant project. Does it run on Linux? You can read about my most recent Linux project at: http://www.free-comp-shop.com/none/dumpster.html Scroll down to see the latest news. I am trying to install Linux on a recycled Dell laptop. If I can make a good how-to story maybe Debian will put it on their DebianOn page: https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Dell "DebianOn is an effort to document how to install, configure and use Debian on some specific hardware. Therefore potential buyers would know if that hardware is supported and owners would know how get the best out of that hardware." "The purpose is not to duplicate the Debian Official Documentation, but to document how to install Debian on some specific hardware." Questions? Comments? Editorial suggestions? Software instructions? -- Keith

Free Dell PowerSwitch 5324

by John Stoffel

Guys, I've got a free Dell PowerSwitch 5324, it's 24 1gb ports and I replaced the loud fans with some quieter ones, but now the fan error light is always on. Is anyone interested in this? It works great, it's just old and I wanted to move to all TP-Link at home to manage it all with Omada. Sorta good idea... Anyway, let me know, otherwise I'm going to scrap it tuesday morning. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/419219/Dell-Powerconnect-5324.html https://wiki.hackspherelabs.com/index.php?title=Dell_Powerconnect_5324 https://www.stevejenkins.com/blog/2011/05/dell-powerconnect-5324-setup-task… https://thejimmahknows.com/inter-vlan-routing-with-linux-powerconnect-5324/ https://www.virtualizationhowto.com/2015/07/dell-nseries-switch-basic-confi…

Re: Mojotron: Robot Wars

by Dennis Payne

This video had a larger purpose behind it. I've been creating a kickstarter for Mojotron: Robot Wars. Kickstarter is a crowdfunding site. I've thought it could be useful for funding open source projects so I've finally gotten around to trying it. The project is not live yet but you can signup to be notified of it's launch. Current plan is to launch on Aug 6th. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/850526497/mojotron-robot-wars On Sat, 2022-07-23 at 12:13 -0400, Dennis Payne via WLUG wrote: > Mojotron is a twin stick shooter similar to Robotron: 2084 or > Llamatron.
