These are PCI cards, right? Then you don't need any of that. The PCI BIOS autoconfigures the IRQ's and addresses. What you can do is: /sbin/lspci -v and check to see if your Realtek shows up there. In there it should also have IRQ's and addresses assigned. This command should get things going manually: /sbin/modprobe 8193too After that, check "dmesg" output and see if there are any error messages about loading 8139too. If not, "/sbin/ifup eth1" should start up the network on that interface. -- Charles R. Server For Sale

Sometime around April I bought a server from Dell. The plan, at the time, was to make it into a webserver and host Wormtown.org and whoever else I could split the bandwidth/hard drive with at a hosting facility in Marlboro. However, it was also in April that I lost my job and then determined that the donations that Wormtown.org collects are not nearly enough to cover the cost of hosting. So, now that I've been unemployed since April. I'm feeling the money start to tighten up and I think it's about time to sell this server. It is a Dell PowerEdge 1650 http://www.dell.com/us/en/esg/topics/esg_pedge_rackmain_servers_1_pedge_165… It is a 1U rackmountable server. It has one PIII 1.13 chip in it It has 512M of RAM (2x256) It has one 36G drive (U160, 10K RPM) The rest of the specs are standard. I've got all the CDs including the Dell Drivers CD and the Red Hat 7.2 Discs that came with it. I've even got Rack Rails. And it does have the cool blue Dell logo that lights up on it. It's been run for about 15 hours total. I believe I paid a bit over $2100 for it. I just priced the same exact machine for $2071 (plus tax and shipping) at Dell.com. I will, of course, take the best offer I can get. I don't want to go any lower than $1500 if I can help it, though. If you're interested, or someone you know might be, contact me. Charles, Thank you for your detailed response. Your answers to Q 3-7 close those issues. On Q2, yes I really mean to run dhcpd to issue IP#s to selected client machines on the internal network. I'm confident that my dhcpd.conf is correct, and it is called by "dhcpd eth1". This was running under RH7.0. I installed the dhcpd RPM off the 7.3 CD (don't have version info here) Since I first wrote, I went back to the new server and banged my head on it for a couple more hours, remarkably getting answers to some of your questions. 1a) ifcfg-eth1 does have "ONBOOT=yes". I will post it when I get back to the server in the morning. 1b) /sbin/ifconfig shows only "lo" and "eth0" and nothing for "eth1" 1c) There is no /etc/modules.conf file on my machine. 1d) I think the module is 8139too, because when I temporarily pulled the Realtek card (eth1) I got a message during the attempt to startup ETH1 complaining about that module by name (did not get complete message). I did some fiddling with modprobe (which I don't understand) after reading section 2.3 of the Ethernet How-To (Using more than one Ethernet Card per machine). From the startup post screen I can see the Ethernet cards are on IRQs 10 & 9, and from the ifconfig I see that eth0 is 0x8000, but I couldn't get the address for eth1. Do I need it? RH7.3 Questions

I have a RH7.0 server which has been giving me regular unrecoverable disk errors since 6-8 weeks ago. I figured today I had enough time to do something about it. I also figured that as long as I had to rebuild from scratch (after installing a new hard drive) I'd upgrade to RH7.3 -- but I have a few more problems that I figured on. The server is dual homed - eth0 (DEC 2104x 10mbps tulip driver) goes to DSL, eth1 (Realtek 100mbps) goes to internal network. Was running IP Masquerade / IPChains / Apache / sendmail / DNS server fine under RH7.0 I have the following problems: 1) During startup eth0 comes up but eth1 does not. My notes on the previous installation [year ago?] don't show that I did anything special when I installed the Realtek (was previously also DEC 2104x) but that doesn't mean I just didn't write it down. 2) dhcpd won't run, but I assume that's related to #1. Was surprised that dhcpd wasn't loaded during install, as I flagged eth1 as dhcp. 3) how do I know whether IPchains or IPtables is active, and how do I switch. Considering the time involved so far, I think I'd rather delay switching to IPTables and use my existing IPChains firewall for now. I'm not a member, but I DID work at RCN during that MegaMeeting. Boston User Groups was started as a corporate-sponsored way to get US Datacenters into the User Group scene, as it were. Incidentally, US Datacenters is no longer in that building, IIRC. It sounds to me like the $50 could be better spent in a whole host of ways other than membership in a group for groups that don't interact much. Especially if you can't even get them to put events up on their calendar for your group. Of course, I MIGHT be biased by the fact that they took over the building I worked at for a meeting that they didn't clear with (or notify) any of the other companies OR the management in the building. At least the pizza was good. :)

Importing email from Eudora or Outlook...

I didn't see this covered in any of the posts I could read in the Mozill groups, nor the FAQs, so here goes... I am trying to import email into Mozilla 1.0. I tried importing from Eudora and got the account settings OK, but did not get the entire address book (notably distribution lists) and couldn't get all the email. I received no error for the address book, but did get an error saying "cannot create proxy object for destination mailboxes" about half way throuhg the import, at which point all the folder that were created were moved to Trash. I decided to try Outlook just in case the Eudora code was messed up, I first imported from Eudora into Outlook, but I got the same problem. In both cases, I get the impression that the import code can't do too much with nested information (email distribution lists and mail folder that contain other folders), but Mozilla seems to be able to get started without any trouble. Then again, there is a lot of email involved and I'm also wondering if there are some limits set somewhere in the code before it gives up... Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!! Steve

Make a PostScript graphic to fill the page, and use any graphic package you can find ( \usepackage{epsfig} works for me ) to tell TeX to put a tiny little box in the page header, which contains your big graphic. TeX doesn't care if your graphic (or anything else) is bigger than the box, it just needs the box to know how much space to leave, but you, you pervert, want to print something and leave no space for it. It should work fine in a technical sense, but promise me the background will be very light and sparse, or I shall revile and shun your document. -- Keith

I'd be happy to use a post-processing step to do this. I've been looking at the ps utilities, but there's nothing that looks like it will work. Any ideas? TIA, Bill

Hi everybody, Last year around this time, an organization was formed called the Boston User Groups (http://www.bostonusergroups.com) WLUG was invited to participate. As a group, we decided to pay our $50/year membership fee to participate for the first year. Some of you might remember this meeting, where the general consensus was "OK, let's try it for a year and see how it goes". Our yearly membership dues are being requested by BUG. I had some questions about whether or not WLUG should continue its participation in BUG. I had a discussion with the WLUG members who attended the BBQ. Several of those people thought that the discussion should take place among the entire WLUG membership. The timing of BUG events is such that I'd like to settle this issue before our next WLUG meeting (ideally within the next week). Take a look at the BUG webpage as you consider my comments and those of other WLUG members. Please take note of the other groups who are current BUG members. There are 3 Linux groups, a Palm group, a Mac group, and some others, not to mention the wide variety of Microsoft related user groups. Given that Microsoft is a documented monopoly (a court said that, not just me), this distribution of member groups should not be a surprise to anybody. Some of the commentary below assumes familiarity with the contents of the BUG website. My initial question (if I recall correctly) was to wonder about what tangible benefit WLUG received for its $50 expenditure. a) BUG has a link to the WLUG website on its website b) WLUG had a table at last year's MegaMeeting and gave out literature advertising the group, its meetings, etc. c) I met some leaders of other regional user groups while eating free pizza, drinking free soda, and touring the US DataCenters facility in Marlboro, MA. d) I know that we got at least one new WLUG member from the MegaMeeting. There is a another way to do this. text = "FreeBSD" results = re.search(r'(.*)BSD', text) print results.groups(1) the compile() command is typically used for long regex expressions so the programmer doesn't need to write again and again. :-) A good Python book is the New Riders "Python Essential Reference". Its a small book with just the language references, plenty of examples, and its written by the creator of Python. Hi, The people of korganizer are working a plugin to allow interaction with an exchange server for it's calender functionality. I believe it will be added in kde3.1. as already mentioned IMAP compliant mail readers will work with mail. I use kmail, evolution, and mutt with the exchange server at my work place. Exchange clients for linux

However I currently have to use the outlook web client to view my mail (which of course doesn't look right in galeon, since M$ designed the outlook web). I have a RedHat 7.0 machine that always spits out an error message just after printing "Power down" and before turning its power off. It goes by quickly and I have never really tried to fix it because at my school there was no class on how to debug software running on a machine with no power and I have never learned the skill. It seems to be the last words of a process that is not properly killed by shutdown but dies when it finds the Operating System missing. It may be related to the RAID disk. Thanks, Theo I read the link, and went home and swapped out a bad SIMM. Everything seems to be up and running. The only anomoly is that after a shutdown completes, I seem to get a similar memory segment error (although not Signal 11). However its been so long since I've done a shutdown that I don't remember if this is new - I can live with it. I'm running a RH 7.0 box at home that does (a) NAT for the local network (b) mail server for multiple domains (c) web server for multiple domains and (d) DNS for multiple domains Yesterday I attempted to ssh login from a workstation and got a message "..exited with Signal 11". I attempted to log on from the console and could not - got screen full of messages and numbers. At this point at least the web server was still running. I hit reset to reboot, got all the standard messages until "Checking root filesystem...." About 5-10% in, then: "Warning ..fsck.ext2 for device /dev/hda2 exited with signal 11 [FAILED] " Looked in my configuration book this morning ... hda2 is "/" . The only fortunate thing is that /home and /var are separate partitions on a second hard drive. Is there any way to recover from this? Barring that - is there any way to recover any config files from various places in /etc on this partition. If not I guess its a complete reload - mainly a problem with mail and DNS config files. I am only mildly competent on this stuff. If you need more info, I'll get it, although I don't know how to capture that screen full of info at the abort point. As to the last question: It certainly is a bit trickier to set up, but that is mainly because it isn't integrated into most distributions or mainline stable kernels. However, now that Linus has accepted it in kernel 2.5, we will hopefully see more support built-in to the distributions. Once you set it up, however, it has more advanced features. Your applications would need to be coded to the native ALSA API to take advantage of most features, but there are some other neat things you can do without specific application support, like intercept the output stream for visual effects and/or recording. Major apps like XMMS (via external plugin), xine and mplayer have ALSA support. My main impetus for using it is that the i810 AC'97 codec support in OSS/Free sucks. Both the Dell machines I've used come with this braindead sound hardware. The older Dell wouldn't do bitrates other than 44kHz/16-bit under OSS (or it tried to do them, with abyssmal results). python regular expressions

Andy, I just typed the pass-phrase into my router's config utility; since it only does up to 128-bit, I don't have to worry about 256! So I got the key and put that in /etc/network-scripts/eth1-config (after testing it by putting it in iwconfig) and it works. I didn't want to send a plain-text passphrase! But it WORKS! Hi Wes, I discovered that I could only get 64 and 128 bit WEP working. Although my hardware allegedly supports up to 256 bit WEP, I was unsuccessful in making it work. I also discovered that typing a pass phrase on a Windows based appliance would yield a different hex string than typing the same pass phrase on Linux. So, what I did was to pick my pass phrase, type it into one machine, and then copy the resulting hex code directly to the other machine ("machine" meaning access point, Linux wireless software, etc). On my system, the hex string is coded in /etc/sysconfig/network/wireless. I'm not sure whether that is a SuSE specific file. The syntax of the important line is: WIRELESS_KEY="s:xxxxx" where the "s:" indicates a string (the pass phrase) and the xxxx are the characters. For 64 bit encryption, you need 5 characters, while with 128 bit encryption, you need 13 characters. Have fun! There was an entry with my manfid in /etc/pcmcia/config and the bound driver was wvlan_cs; I switched it to orinoco_cs and, taking the cheesy way of rebooting, the network came up with the orinoco driver! (Although I use SuSE 8.0, I believe the description below is distribution agnostic). Try this as root: # cardctl ident Note the "manfid" line. Next, check /etc/pcmcia/config and see if a card with an entry matching the manfid is present. In my case, there was no entry so I added one thus: card "Andy's Linksys Wireless" manfid 0x0274, 0x1613 bind "orinoco_cs" The card string seems to be arbitrary text. The manfid comes from "cardctl ident", and the bind is to a kernel module. I have hotplugging services running, so when I plug in my wireless adapter, it automagically loads the kernel module(s), starts the net, sets up routing, etc. Give it a try and let us know how it goes! orinoco driver

Hi all, hope the BBQ went well, sorry I couldn't come (I was picking up my Brother-In-Law at Logan...sigh, one day I'll get to a meeting). I've got a netgear wifi card that works great in Mandrake Linux, with the exception of wep (I know, it's cracked). In doing some research on the card and the kernel module that loads wvlan_cs, I have found out that this module has been replaced (by and large) by orinoco_cs, which I understand to be more functional (i.e. maybe I can get wep working?). I tried modprobe -r wvlan_cs and modprobe orinoco_cs but it won't bind to my pcmcia card. So I figured, "Well, maybe my card is just one that can't use the newer driver..." WRONG! Just to see what it was like, I download Knoppix, burned it onto a cd, and booted it up. Guess what driver loaded? orinoco_cs!! And it worked well too. Well, since Knoppix is a cd-boot, run in memory distro; I'm not changing to it anytime soon. So I'm going to use this opportunity to learn something new. How can I bind the orinoco driver to my card? Stupid Hardware Clock Tricks, aka: WTF?

Over this past weekend I upgraded my server from a P200/RedHat Linux 7.2 to a new Athlon 850/RedHat Linux 7.3. The Athlon was my trusty workstation for many a year. Everything's great, except for one problem: the clock goes crazy! Kernel int-13 interface?

Hey, this one goes out to all you kernel hackers out there. After 4 years, I've once again become interested in installing Linux on my HP OmniBook 300. Because it's an aswesome computer, and I think DOS 5 is a complete waste of its skill. [Background. The OB300 is a vintage 386-20, with a passive reflective 640x480 LCD display. Basically an oversize TI calculator running DOS] Anyway, from my first tests, I discovered that I can indeed boot the kernel using loadlin. But it immediately freaks out because it can't read (or even think about) my primary media... solid-state PCMCIA flash cards. Now, I briefly tried looking up some data on the OB300's PCMCIA chipset (I think the first standard was still being developed when this computer was made) and quickly decided that wasn't the route to go. And HP told me to go to hell when I asked. But DOS seems to work just fine using the int 13 interface to access the flash disks. So now my question... can I do that in Linux? I don't see any block device support (and most people would agree an int 13 block device would be stupid), but I think I can write one myself. All it would have to do is make the switch into real mode, call the int 13 interface, and then come back. Will Linux tolerate that? As far as I know, many drivers use a real mode interrupt on laptops to trigger their power saving capabilities (suspend, etc...), so I suspect it would be okay. Can anyone stop me before I go too far? Or should I go ahead and write this thing? -Chuck

In many cases, there are separate modules for USB devices. Hotplug (when it works) is supposed to load these modules automatically. In my personal experience, I have found USB support to be spotty and not always reliable. However, when it does work, it tends to work fairly well. I recently took my printer off of USB and put it back to the much more reliable parallel port and have had no problems since. Chuck, most mass-storage devices are supported by the usb-storage module. Plug in the drive go to a shell and type "usbview" the list should have your drive there, and may tell you what driver it uses. USB Support in Linux 2.4.18

How can I tell if a specific USB device, in this case a removable USB hard drive, is supported by my kernel? I know that Linux 2.4.18 has "support" for USB devices. Does this mean all USB devices or just a few? I would think that the OS talks to the USB controller via a series of well documented commands and that its up to the controller to talk to the specific USB device. Does this make sense, or is there more to it? Thanks, Chuck

Hi All, I got my home network rigged up to do dynamic dns with dhcp. It seems that the linux and fBSD dhcp clients don't send the hostname to the dhcp server, so no name record is created for those clients. Does anyone know how to do this? Andy, Passive antennas work best when there the signal is low. It usually won't do a whole heck of a lot if the signal isn't there to begin with. I've done a couple of installations where I've used multiple antennas located in different parts of the building. The Linksys systems use two antennas for diversity reception. I've taken one of them and attached it to coax and an antenna and placed it in the "problem" room. It will reduce the overall range somewhat (since you'll lose your diversity reception capabilities) but it will fill the area you want the signal in. If you want to you can also put another antenna in a second "problem" room. This would of course change the center of your coverage area but if the antennas used have high enough gain to overcome the coax loss then you may actually gain some range in certain directions. The whole key is to put the signal where you want it. You'll sometimes trade off your signal in one location to improve it in another. My access point is on the 2nd floor in approx. the middle of that floor. I'm trying to use the laptop on the 1st floor at one end of the house to (almost) no avail. Moving the access point to other locations in the room seems to make little difference. My house is not a mansion - I'm well within the 300 ft alleged range. My 2.4 GHz wireless phones have no problem over this particular path through the house (and yes, I turned them off in case they were causing interference). Issues with aic7770?

Has anybody done a Red Hat 7.3 install on a box with an Adaptec 7770 card in it? The machine was running *cough* the server version 4.0 of an OS that rhymes with "Empty" and working fine. However, when boot off the CD due to our buddy "El Torito" and INT13. The bios is able to get the diskette image but then unable to find the CD. I've got a ftp site with RH 7.3 so I point to it and everything works fine until I have to specify which driver I'd like to use for the scsi card. When I specify the Adaptec 7xxx series driver, the kernel issues an "Opps" and continues on. This machine is a 100mhz pentium HP Netserver. (yeah, I know its slow... I plan on using it as a standalone JBOD) Thanks, Tim.

WLUG BBQ!!!

Hi Everybody, Although I have not yet updated the WLUG website, the WLUG BBQ is going to happen! The BBQ will be held in Shrewsbury at Doug Waud's house like it was 2 years ago. Directions are forthcoming. Thanks, Doug! Our next meeting of WLUG will be at the BBQ on Thursday, August 22, 2002. The BBQ will start around 6 PM and go until Doug kicks us out (watch it, he has Steve as his bouncer). If you can't make it at 6 PM, show up whenever you can. WLUG will supply the food and munchies and will have sodas on hand. You may BYOB (beer, wine, whatever) if you wish. If you would like to bring a salad or dessert, feel free! Label your container with your name to insure its return. Doug has a swimming pool which we can use, so if you are interested, bring a bathing suit and towel. Its not clear to me if one must actually *wear* the bathing suit. We'll rig up some kind of projection system for a LInux talk of some flavor. It may end up getting used by some of you ASCII Art fanatics, but that's OK too. ;-) What good would a Linux party be without an Internet connection, a projector, and a laptop or three? I've been using gentoo since the earliest beta versions. Its an amazing distro and i have been very happy with it. I have actually done a few ebuilds myself. Its a very powerful distro with a lot of configuration options that can allow you to really customize your distro. Wireless networking with LInksys WAP11 and WPC11

HI all, I finally got WEP to work with this hardware ! The trick is to download the firmware update to the WAP11 wireless access point and install it. The firmware version is 1.01c and it came out just a few days ago. Now, of course, the install program only runs in Windows. I inquired about non-Windows solutions. One can use tftp to transfer the binary image to the WAP11 to do the firmware upgrade and it does work! One must first disable the WAP11 password and also disable the MAC address filter. Of course, this is totally non-supported, we support windows only, we're sorry for your inconvenience, yada, yada, yada. I'm using the orinoco{_cs} driver without problems. I tried wlan-ng but could not get it to work at all. The configuration of wlan-ng is quite confusing to me. I taught from this book some 18 years ago at BU... I liken it to K&R on C and C++ - dense, but very useful. Having no idea what your background is, If you are interested in "tooling up" but what to do it slowly, there are some other ways to go. The two languages that top my list are Python and Java. Java is very popular and gives you all the OOP concepts you would need, and it has the advantage that it doesn't suffer from the issues C++ does (specifically, backwards compatibility with C). Having said that, it is very C/C++ like in syntax. The book for Java is "Thinking in Java" by Bruce Eckel. He also has a book under the title of "Thinking in C++". Python is interesting. Python is often used as "executable pseudocode" and, depending on what you are going after, it may be the ticket. Then again, Java on your resume will get you hired before Python will. ;-) As a total aside, you might also want to have a look at Martin Fowler's "UML Distilled". UML is very useful for programming and Martin is an expert. I know him from my days at OMG (a standards organization) where he worked on the committee that dealt with UML. A very fast talking Brit with a marvelous sense of humor. His book is the book for UML. Regards, Steve

Be aware that the historical Pascal you may have been exposed to as a student in the past has changed considerably over the years. Borland has "owned" Pascal for over a decade and defined more extensions than there were original language constructs. The current "Delphi Pascal" is far closer to C++ than any other single language and is as completely object oriented as C++ is. This is the "Pascal" of Kylix and is a truly useful language since it retains much of the useful type-safe, single pass attributes of the original Pascal effort. Even with the rich features now available you will not find a faster compile-test-fix-compile cycle anywhere for a fully compiled language. All the other current open source efforts are trying for compatibility with this de facto standard. Therefore, if you find a book on Kylix you should do well learning about the whole group.

NFS, anyone?

Hi, I have a server running Mandrake 8.2. I had a problem unmounting a CDROM (I hate supermount!), so I rebooted the server. On the way back up, the NFS service hung. This is now the second time this has happened. (The first time, I attributed it to students messing with the server, and reinstalled everything.) Now, after two days of getting things back to normal, it's happened again, this time sans students. I'm writing this from home, as the school's link to the Internet is down. Anyone know where the relevant state data for NFS is stashed? Thanks, Skip

Greetings! A shell script question: Can anyone tell me the pros & cons of coding your shell scripts to stay in-process instead of spawning a child process when needed? For example, ${VARIABLE##*/} instead of `basename $VARIABLE` I'm trying to use the former as much as possible now but I wasn't exactly sure if that is better, not so safe or just doesn't matter. pine/mozilla/htmlview

I recently switched to mozilla 1.0, and I'm having problems getting pine to understand that I want to use mozilla as my URL viewer. In the pine setup, I set the URL viewer to a perl script that I wrote that then runs mozilla. (The script works fine when I run it separately.) When I view a URL in pine, I end up with the KDE browser. The output of "ps" shows that pine is running /usr/bin/htmlview instead of my perl script. Any idea why pine is ignoring my setup? TIA, Bill

Hi All, I have an intersting problem. I have a device (my old iopener) with linux installed and freeBSD (i dual boot). Both installs are really out of date, and i want to re-install linux, but i don't have a cdrom drive, or floppy drive. I only have network connection. Is there a way to add an entry in lilo to boot off a CD image, or floppy image? If anyone sees another way to install linux, i'm all hears. Thanks, --brad

Wireless question about WEP

Hi all, I got 64 bit encryption between my laptop and my access point working but there is a problem. The password is OK, and I can ping from my laptop to my network with 64-bit WEP enabled. Others on my network can ping the laptop without any problems. The trouble arises when I try to use the link for something useful, like surfing the web. Web pages come over very slowly if they complete at all. On a wired system, the page comes over quickly, so its not the other end of the Internet causing the problem. If I turn off WEP, everything is great. Also, I seem totally unable to make 128 or 256 bit encryption work at all (not even a successful ping) despite the fact that both sides agree on the password. What should I check? I am using the orinoco_cs driver in the 2.4.18 kernel. I installed freeswan, but didn't configure it correctly and all of the sudden I didn't have access to my lan (remember that e-mail I sent last week? that was the problem). When I have the time I'll sit down and read all about that and ipsec; but I can't right now. WEP is just this annoying buzz that I should be able to make work, and yet can't. It's annoying. Doug and I were trying to figure where to project and onto what, and we do have some ideas in mind (generated fog, multiple sprinklers, side of house, bed sheets, et al.). In fact, I think we should use the projector regardless of how many attend - it will be easier for all to see. However, I doubt either of us would mention this to his wife, so buying a 60"+ HDTV, for example, is not entirely ruled out! ;-) If there are any unforeseen issues, my place would be backup, and there is high-speed Internet at both locations, so that shouldn't be an issue (But Doug has a pool!). Given the appropriate technology, like building on the wireless stuff we did this week, it shouldn't matter where the meeting is held (distractions like food and drink aside!). Steve

In my ~/.xserverrc file, I have put "-dpi 100" and the X server comes up in 100 dpi mode and I am a happy camper. Now, I think I'd like to have the graphical login from run level 5. kdm comes up with a nice screen, but the X server is only running at 75 dpi. I cannot figure out where to put the 100 dpi setting for this situation. It appears not to read the same files for the xdm/kdm method of starting the X server as it does when one types startx. Last time we had a BBQ, about a dozen people showed up, so something like the aforementioned might work in that case. If, however, about 30 people showed up(!), this idea probably wouldn't work so well. I'm not sure if Doug (WLUG BBQ host) has a 60" projection screen TV that he could connect to his laptop. Hey folks! Thanks for multiple answers to my question. I ended up using Theo's solution: for i in *_x.*; do mv -f $i `echo $i | sed -e 's/_x././'`; done and it worked perfectly to get the job done. I've since been playing around with a few of the other suggestions to see what would work best next time I need to do soemthing similar. Bash help

Hey folks! I have a bunch of files on a server that are in the format "filename_x.dat" and I need to rename them "filename.dat", i.e. strip to last two characters off the filename while maintaining the extension. If it wasn't for the fact that I have about 400 files in multiple directories, I'd do it by hand. However, it's of a somewhat urgent nature - hence this slightly off-topic cry for help! =) I'm pretty sure there's a way to do it via a shell script (I use bash) - the only problem being that I've never written one before. Can anyone point me to a faq/tutorial/website that might explain the process? If it's a trivial task, anyone care to take a stab? Google gave me a few leads, but most aren't helping a lot. writing to tape

If this were a Sun box, I'd blame gated, which is the arch nemesis of all that is good and decent. ;) On a related note, the first thing I would look at is the routing table (netstat -nr), and make sure you have a route for that network. interesting problem

Shortly after I started using a wireless lan, I began having problems with connecting to my local ip addresses; I'm not sure what's causing it. Internet works FINE, and yet, a couple of minutes after I boot my machine I can't connect to anything in the 192.168 range! It doesn't matter the protocol, smb, http, etc. no connections at all. What's stranger is that my win4lin install, which uses vnet, has no problems at all. What in the world is going on here? Any thoughts? Wes

Lexmark z22 printing

Printing fun... Some of you might already know what I have to say, but I wanted to get this out for those that are in my boat... I am running a Gateway Solo 9100 laptop with Red Hat 7.3 installed. I mentioned a few months back (almost a year ago, now) that I had gotten my Lexmark z22 to print with Red Hat 7.1. One thing that I hate about upgrading RH versions is that it invariably forces me to re-learn things, since Red Hat can't seem to leave current configurations alone. 8\ ANYWAY, for a bunch of Stupid Reasons, I decided that I wanted to make use of the USB port on my z22 instead of the parallel port. Imagine, if you will, the fun I had in trying to get a printer that is barely supported by Linux to be recognized on the USB interface... I went to Lexmark's website and got the Linux drivers. Wouldn't you know it, though, but the drivers make no effort whatsoever to support the USB interface on the printer! After a bit of poking around, I realized that there was a KDE Control Panel! I use Window Maker by default and I was annoyed that control-panel was removed. I went through there and LO! the Lexmark z22 is there, right on the USB interface! 8) Granted, there are a couple snags. It looks like I can print multiple text-only documents with no problem, but if I print a Postscript file, then I have to turn the printer off then turn it on again. Compared to having no printer at all (or worse-yet, having to print from WinDOZE!), I see this as only a minor inconvenience. I'm thinking that this rig is using the foomatic configuration scripts, which may be unacceptable to some. I base this thought on the fact that the driver in use is actually for the Lexmark 3200 series, which (according to the .xml file) may print "a bit too rich"... <shrug> It looks okay for the black text that I'm printing with right now. There are called kioslaves (intoduced in kde2.0), there are pretty neat. A complete list can be found in the kcontol center information->protocals. Some of these kioslaves do not make sense to call directly, for example pop3. the pop3 kioslave is used by kmail. kioslaves are available to all KDE applications to read from, and possibly write to. For example you can write a document in kword, and save it to a location using a kioslave. Just type 'ftp://somehost/path' in the 'save as' location. The kioslave for ftp (kio_ftp) will be called and do the file I/O. There are other kioslaves available that are not distributed with KDE, like fish, which is a kioslave that will allow you to brows a remote machine using ssh. Konqueror enhanced browsing

Hi all, I've noticed in Konqueror that one can type things like: info: ...in the URL field and Konqueror will display info pages. There are others, such as: smb: lan: ftp: man: http: camera: The aforementioned are not listed in the Konqueror enhanced browsing configuration window, and I would guess that they are Konqueror defaults. Is there a definitive list of these? I'm wondering what features I might be missing that I'd like to use! A lot of newer distros now mount /dev/shm as tmpfs, and it's basically a resizable ramdisk that will grow, shrink, or even swap out to disk as needed. I doubt that locking files are going to take up much space that you'd need back for memory, but on the other hand you probably don't need extra fast access to them either. ;-) Brian J. tmpfs

When researching the Reiserfs a while back, I discovered the tmpfs file system and the --bind option to mount. Both of these are nice tools to have around. --bind has made it into the mount man page, but the tmpfs is not documented in the man pages anywhere I can think to look. Does anyone know of a reason that it should not be used? I'm thinking of using it for some locking files and pid stamps -- all stuff that should not persist across a reboot. TIA, Bill
