Samba Server and its connection with Windows 98.

Hi all, Well, may be somebody of you need this information, if not u can ignore it... ;p Well, samba server and its connection to Windows 9* basicly only need this configuration done. It works fine with me here, RedHat 7.2 and its default application ( Including Samba ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When u install and configuring samba, u must be defining this main several configuration bellow..... 1. Defining the network address to be allowed accessing the Samba Server. 2. Defining the WORKGROUP name. Simply, use the same network address with unique host address in order to estabilsh the connection. for ex :192.168.24.X, u can use this network address and define the -X as host ip. So, by this u got to make the sama workgroup among your server and your client ( Windows 98 ) Please make sure that the user who wants to use the samba server are listed in your server. Instantly, there is a simple registry modification in Windows family, here I'll tell you in case of WINDOWS 98. After finishing the ethernet card, there must be a logon box to be diplayed before you use your windows 98. Here, at the folder defined bellow, create EnablePlainTextPassword and fill 1 as the value. Details : Regedit My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP\EnablePlainTextPassword (DWORD value =1) Restart your windows, then in logon box, enter your Linux|Unix users with its password. Talking to BBC World ClickOnline at his home in Silicon Valley, the inventor of the Linux operating system admitted that he has never been in the same room with his arch-rival. "We have been at the same conferences but never in the same room. I wouldn't know what to say to him," he told ClickOnline. Mr Torvalds enjoys the notoriety he has achieved as the man that challenged the Microsoft empire with his open source alternative operating system. *Rising to the challenge "In a way it is fun. I'm pleased to be a poster boy. It gives me some self-importance," he said. He would not, however, want to become personally involved in the dispute with Microsoft. "I've tried to stay out of the Microsoft debate. If you start doing things because you hate others and want to screw them over the end result is bad," he said. The main reason he developed Linux in the first place had as much to do with wanting a challenge as being fed up with an operating system that would not do what he wanted it to. Like most technology projects it ran way over the time allotted to it and, to this day, is not truly finished. "It was a lot harder than I expected. I thought, like most of my projects, it would talk half a year and then I'd lose interest," he said. To the relief of his legion of followers he did persevere and eleven years on is still working on it. Reluctance to change While Linux is gradually gaining ground on Microsoft it might well not be suitable for everyone, Mr Torvalds admitted. "Most people don't want to change. They may hate Windows but they run it despite that because, quite frankly, they don't care about computers," he said. And even those that do care, often install Linux without much idea of what they want it to do, he said. Mr Torvalds is not convinced that the open source movement, which has radically altered both the operating system landscape and the mindset of Microsoft itself, will ever entirely topple the Gates empire. "I think, in the end, Linux will be a big part of why it happens but Microsoft is not going to shrink into nothingness in the foreseeable future," he said. Instead it is more likely that Microsoft will become like IBM - "still huge but not the dominant force anymore", he said. The world of coding is beginning to lose importance as Mr Torvalds, ubergeek, admits he has finally found a balance between work and play. *Uber-geek grows up "I have a life too. I have kids now. Linux has been a big part of my life but now I want to have my own time," he told ClickOnline. Karl, Sorry for taking so long to answer your post, devusb is mounted usb devices just aren't accepting addresses. The only fix I've seen in the web is to get the the usb bridge off irq 9 and move it to 11. I still haven't figured out how to do that manually. Download Plugin for Mozilla...

Hi all! I keep getting this annoying message from Mozilla 1.0 about a Download Plugin Download abvailable from Netscape. This happens almost everytime I go to a webpage to unsubscribe from some of the junk mail I get. I have tried looking for a Download Plugin Download at both Mozilla and Netscape, but have come up empty handed. Anyone know of such a thing? Thanks! Steve

Earlier this week I installed a minimalist configuration of RH 8.0 on my old Thinkpad 365XD (P133/40MB/6GB). The configuration works fine except for being slow due to lack of processor and memory (40 MB RAM is max'd). The only snag I ran into was a hang on install just before the first RPM installs. The machine locked up there twice during the text install. I found this lockup only happened to me doing a "custom" install and not the "workstation" install. RH 8.0 does seem improved over RH 7.X in terms of the quality of fonts and GUI mods. I also found more things I could quickly disable features to make life bearable on this old hardware (wallpaper,menu icons,etc). Unfortunately, I have not tried other distributions yet and cannot intelligently compare them to RH 7.X or 8.0. My next step is to find a very small window manager to hopefully make this machine perform reasonably in X. Currently I am considering replacing the default Gnome with either IceWM and Enlightenment. Hello, About 24 months ago I gave linux RH 6.2 a try. I am not a programmer and not very familiar with unix or linux. I did get the linux to run and was able to connect to the internet but had a lot of trouble getting printers to work and found it generally difficult for someone with my skill level. WLUG was very helpful and I though that in a while I would try again. I think that this fall I am going to make another effort. Are there any suggestions of what distro to try. Basically I will have a dual boot system with either xp or 2000. I have a PII 450 with 196mb ram and 13gig HD. I appreciate the advice. sources???

I'm looking at some software I have to build at work, and I'm trying to work with RedHat 8.0, even though I don't have it yet. I'm curious about a particulare "binary" package: kernel-source-2.4.18-14.i386.rpm and similarly: glibc-kernheaders-2.4-7.20.i386.rpm These are clearly source files. How do they compare with: kernel-2.4.18-14.src.rpm ???? In particular, I'd like to try building my package (targeting 8.0) on my 7.2 box. (Maybe that's unrealistic. It's a fibre HBA driver module.) At any rate, why the mixup with the "sources"? And, why would header files be non-relocatable on the install? (At least the kernel headers are with 7.2. TIA, Bill

I'm sorry I didn't follow this thread from the start, but I can explain how we have Samba setup at our client site: We are running Samba 2.2.2 on the server side (Solaris 2.6 or 2.7) with mostly Windows 2000 clients connecting on the client side. When I want to map my home directory from my Windows 2000 client, I use Map Network Drive and supply the following information: Drive: <some letter> Folder: \\clemens\simoncim When I hit finish, it maps my Unix home directory without any problems.

If you have only 5 users, I think the simplest approach is to create a unique share for each person, so that when you go to \\server, you'll see shares for mom, dad, kid1, kid2, kid3. Each one should have an account on the linux box, and each share should have a 'force user' & 'force group' in smb.conf for their own account. That way, if you click on kid1, you have to enter kid1's password, regardless of what Win98 sends for the username. You also have to remember to uncheck 'remember password' too. -Chuck

Hi all, I got mandrake 9.0 on my laptop (now XP-less, smile) and I love it. However, I've got two problems.... 1. My usb devices are not accepting addresses, I've got a dmesg log in a file if you want to see it. 2. I can't get tpconfig to work! Does anyone know if the patch was pre-installed for tpconfig in previous mdk's? I used to be able to install the rpm and it just worked, now it doesn't work at all (and I hate "tapping"). I don't know about win98, but on 2000, when you "Map Network Drive" there's a hyperlink (yes, hyperlink... Don't ask me why it wouldn't be a button, or even better a checkbox with a slightly different program flow ... But enough of my rant about MS bad UI design) that says "Connect using a different username". If you hit that, you can specify a username when connecting. I've also noticed if I connect to \\server\hughesm (my home directory) it will ask for my username & password, I log into windows as MarcH, and then if I connect to any other share on that server it uses that name, but it only asks me for a username for my home directory... I want to set up some samba shares to be mounted on my win98 box, and I'd like to protect the shares with usernames and passwords, but I can't remember how to specify a username from the win98 box. I seem to remember a way by adding the username to the share spec, but I can't find any documentation on the subject. Any ideas? Or should I use a different approach? Just wanna tell u this, you might be need it, if not... just ignore it.... ;p Well, at the first time, before removing the available openssl, you might have to enable the TELNET CONNECTION first. It's better to completely remove the available openssl first, but remember to ENABLE THE TELNET CONNECTION first. After removing the old openssl, you can not make any other SSH connection to your remote machine. You have got to do this fast, do not let the TELNET CONNECTION enable for a long time period. Get the latest openssl in www.openssl.com, and follow the instruction. Dont be affraid of libcrypto.* proble. Just configured the openssl installation with shared (./configure --prefix=/YOUR_OPENSSL_DIR_TARGET --openssldir=/YOUR_OPENSSL_DIR_TARGET shared) That's the main idean that I would like to say, shared. It's automatically created the latest file of libcrypto.* and other its need. Simple, make the duplicate of the needed file and create a link from a defined .so as .so asked. this depends on the distribution you're using ;) i'm assuming you're currently using RedHat which means you're gonna have to do some work to track down which files it installed. you *might* be lucky and the makefile that came with the .tar will have an 'uninstall' target ... run this cmd in the directory where you extracted the sources: `make uninstall` if it complains about no target (in other words nothing seems to happen), then look to see if the source has a configure script. if it does, run it with the preix option set to a directory that is currently empty ... `./configure --prefix=/tmp/my_stupid_install` and then run make like that ... hopefully make will respect the prefix completely and install under that directory, at which point you can analyze the resulting directory tree to see where the last install put files. -mike On Mon, 30 Sep 2002, Aramico wrote: > How can i make a completelly uninstall for an application that has been installed by using .tar sources ? >

Hi, I've removed my ssl rpm before, now I'm installing the latest version of ssl (openssl - openssl-0.9.6g.tar.gz ). Everythin' goes okay, no error found.... THat something i confused just about getting this message when i'm trying to start up the sshd. sshd: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory In fact, how can i get the source of libcrypto.so.2, how can i make a link to this ? the source ? THanks.

Hi All, I was wondering if there is a way to create a window that would be a tunnel into another X server. For example if i'm running a server on :0 and on :1, i would like to have a window, which is connected to :0, that would show what is being displayed on :1. This is similar to how vmware works. When you start vmware in window on :0 it will actually start another X server on :1 and display (in a window) the contents on :1. Is this possible (other then with vmware)? Thanks, --brad

Check the LILO howto for what the letters mean, I assume you have the kernel placed outside of where the BIOS can read. Make sure you have the latest BIOS revision and the drive is set in LBA mode (and use GRUB, while you're at it). ;-) Brian J. OpenSSL!

Can i get my latest version of openssl and install it to my remote server without loosing any connection to my server ? Ups, what have I done ? I 'v lost my connection to my remote server cause i have removed openssl on it :( Now, i can not connect to my remote server, it means i have to spend so much money to the technical service :( Can you all please give me any suggestion in order of this case not happens again.. ? Procmail setup

Hi, I'm trying to configure SpamAssassin to run on my RH7.0 server. Procmail was installed with the inital setup. I've added the following line to my .forward file: "|IFS=' ' && exec /etc/smrsh/procmail -f- || exit 75 #test" I've also tried: "|IFS=' ' && exec /usr/bin/procmail -f- || exit 75 #test" The user I'm trying this out on is "test". There is a .procmailrc file in /home/test/ just like what's described in the SpamAssassin INSTALL file. I've added a sym link for procmail in /etc/smrsh to /usr/bin/procmail. My sendmail.mc file has the following line: FEATURE(`smrsh',`/usr/sbin/smrsh')dnl When I send mail to test, it bounces back with this error: ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- "|IFS=' ' && exec /etc/smrsh/procmail -f- || exit 75 #test" (reason: 550 Unsafe for mailing to programs) (expanded from: <test(a)fiero.net>) I've scoured the net for info on setting this up properly and have tried everything that's been suggested. I'm at a loss what else is causing this problem. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks! jim

star office fonts

When I upgraded to RedHat 7.2, Star Office seemed to lose most of its fonts. (I can't remember if I installed the new Star Office from the distro, but I think I did.) I've skimmed some web documents on adding fonts, and they seem fairly complex and I don't want to spend that much time on this. Does anyone know an easy way of getting decent fonts back? TIA, Bill

ipchains is for kernels in the 2.2 series. iptables is for kernels in the 2.4 series. However, I believe there's an option in the kernel configuration so that you can continue to use ipchains commands with the 2.4 kernels. I'd suggest going with this option until you get a chance to update your firewall rules to iptables, (which I'd really suggest you do since iptables has some options that aren't available in ipchains). It has no MTA capability, and right now I'm just using smtpclient to jam my mail to my provider's (work or cablemodem) SMTP server. That's on my desktop PCs at home and work. But for mobile use, I want something more badass. Chuck A. and Brad have indicated that sendmail can do all I want (if I can figure out how to make it do it all, which could be a fun project in itself!!) I know there are other options, though. qmail, exim, and probably others. Anyone know about these things, pros & cons & whatnot? -Chuck

Sendmail? Just use sendmail's default config, with no smart relay host. By default, it will use DNS MX records to determine the SMTP server to send to. You might want to use a BIND cacheing nameserver, too, so you can look things up while you are disconnected from the net (put 0.0.0.0 in /etc/resolv.conf). This will work anywhere that doesn't filter outbound SMTP connections. You can probably script something that will check for a network connection and force sendmail's queue to send when you connect. If you must use a smart relay host for SMTP outbound in certain places, then you can probably hook something into the DHCP client (use dhclient with it's dhclient-script hooks) to modify sendmail's configuration based on where you are connected. You'd need to change the "DS" line in /etc/sendmail.cf and then restart sendmail. I don't think you can fiddle with the smart relay host dynamically though. MTA for laptop?

Hey, guys. Got a flame war question for y'all, I guess. What's a good (or the best?) MTA to have on my laptop. Here's what I'd like to be able to do: - Queue outgoing mail while offline, send while online (automatically, if possible... like, "Hey there's a network connection! I'll send all my queued mail!") - Automatically figure out the right way to send stuff based on the current network config. (If I'm at my office, it should use my local office SMTP server... at home, my cable provider.) - Bonus points if it attempts to deliver directly to hosts that will accept it, before falling back to my provider's SMTP. - Extra bonus points if it remembers what hosts won't accept mail directly from me and uses my provider's SMTP for those messages by default. I probably have other demands, but that's all I can think of for now. Maybe like if I'm on a dial up link, it would send small mail first? Stuff like that. Any ideas? -Chuck

Practical replacements for Project.

I recently purchased the codeweavers office suite and I'm really happy with it. Stat office did everything I needed except for two apps, Outlook and Project. Outlook works perfectly under it (as you can see) but I haven't found a suitable replacement for project. Does anybody have any suitable work arounds or solutions to getting it to work with project. (I've attempted an install but get stone walled with errors and have logged a ticket) Thanks, Tim.

Hi all. MY usb ports used to work under linux in my HP notebook, it would hot-plug and everything. Now, it detects the devices I plug in, tries to register them, and then they disappear. I can acutally watch this with usb view. Any ideas what might be causing this? Wes

I was "given" namesbeyond.com when I grabbed hanley.net via snapnames.com on one impulsive spring day. I really can't say they are good ot bad not having a whole lot of experience with registrars...but I haven't had any problems with them. Charter Pipeline Networking

I was wondering what I am doing wrong? I have 2 PC's one with Win98 and one with WinME (I know they both suck... but beyond that). When Charter came they installed their software and modem to only one PC, (The other hadn't arrived yet). Now I am trying to network the two together, I have a HUB, and eithernet cards, and cables, is there some other piece of hardware I am missing? Or do I need some software support. In my area for charter to do anything it's 75 bucks a half hour to come out... all they left me with was a modem, and one small cord? Do I need software, or maybe just some configuration advice? Get a router, like $49 or something. Uplug the cable modem. Plug in your ethernet cables to the router, configure it to work...DHCP WITH NAT. And set it up as a dhcp server. Plug back in your cable modem after you plug in it's ethernet cable to your router's wan port. You should now have eveything working. BTW, HP tech support told me to run a batch command yesterday to figure out why my cursed restore disk didnt' work any more. It ERASED MY PARTITION TABLE. I was ready to spit nails. The last back-up is a month old, that is my fault; but do you THINK that maybe you'd get a warning that you we're running more than just a diagnostic? I EXPLAINED that both OS's worked fine, but I was going to be resizing my XP partition and wanted to be able to start from scratch. But does anyone listen, no! So, they wanted me to send in my laptop to be "reimaged" I'd be without it for a week. It's bad enough that I've lost my books database (can't FIND that back up, I hate moving stuff around); but you want me to send in a laptop to get a bit changed on the bios so my computer will match the restore disk (a bios update created the incompatability)!!! Guess what you can do with THAT idea. I asked for a full version of XP to be sent to me, "I'm sorry, the license we have don't allow us to do that." I asked that if I sent in my laptop could I get it formatted in fat32 instead of blasted ntfs, "I'm sorry were not set up for that." The fex-ex guy came for my laptop and I said, "I'm sorry, it's not going anywhere." Guess what OS is no longer on my system? I am so fed up at being treated like a criminal by companies that I give my MONEY to that I'm not interested in playing anymore. I DO have win98 installed via win4lin, for ONE program; but hopefully even that will one day have a linux version. Here's and idea, we should have a "burn all your MS licenses day." I've got a Webramp 200i with an internal modem and a second BOCA 56k modem (modems can be independently operated or bonded together if your ISP allows it) that I used before I got cable internet. Some people learn things in different ways. If reading HOWTOS was the best way to do something, why do we have WLUG meetings? I wouldn't see these as being comprehensive overviews of whatever we're trying to teach, but more like a WLUG presentation where we show the beginnings of one "cool" thing. I think this would be great for people who have heard of linux, but never tried it out before... The real newbies, the people who don't want to wade through pages and pages of documentation just to get an idea of what they need to do. Take the first video that was suggested, "What is linux and why it's good" I think a 15 minute video can show linux off more than reading about it for hours. Another person had suggested advocacy style videos, I would assume this would be "built in" to any video we made. If we make one on how to set up a small business server (mail, file sharing, dhcp, dns), then we would also mention why it's better than other solutions. Hell, maybe that video could even be used by employees to help sell management (who doesn't want to read through *any* technical documentation) on the linux idea. And yes, this is a lot of work. I wouldn't expect us to do more than one video a month. Lets take 60 for n ... 15 minute video equals 15 man-hours of work. 5 people working on it means they'll have to spend a full work day a month (I'm assuming video production is like programming where you don't scale linearly by throwing more people at it). Hi all Thought you might enjoy the following sent to my wife: (Yes technically it is not Linux but it does make you appreciate it!) Haiku For Computers An e-mail currently circulating offers Haiku in place of the impersonal and unhelpful Microsoft error messages. Haiku poetry has strict construction rules. Each poem has only 17 syllables:5 in the first line, 7 in the second line and 5 in the third line. Your file was so big. It might be very useful, But now it is gone. The Web site you seek Cannot be located, but Countless more exist. Chaos reigns within. Reflect, repent, and reboot. Order shall return. Program aborting: Close all that you have worked on. Last night after going to the B several of us ended up in the parking lot chatting about a variety of things including classic video game emulation, microsoft bashing, and creating a WLUG series of videos. Last night, it seemed like a great idea to make some kind of linux based show and distribute those videos for free (over the internet, possible on VCD as well). There were several ideas, including a social commentary (ala "geeks in space" http://www.thesync.com/geeks/) a tech-help show answering emails (http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/) and instructional videos (just think of that comercial for the windows videos... "Just like a VCR, pop the cd into the computer, hit play, and learn"). Personally, I like the last idea best since it really can provide value for the community (as opposed to providing entertainment). We had also thought that a shorter 15-minute style video would be a great way to start. Personally, I'm in favor of "What is linux, and why is it good for you". So I guess the questions are, do people think this is still a good idea (as opposed to an idea made after consuming too much beer). Would people be willing to help? REMINDER: Meeting Wed 18-sept-2002 7:00 PM

HI Everybody, My apologies for not sending this out sooner, but our meeting for Wednesday evening is going to take place at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI campus like usual. We won't be having the install fest since I didn't get off my butt and make the arrangements (sorry!). I hope to do that tomorrow for a potential install fest in 1-2 weeks. I'll say more about that on Wed evening (that'll put the pressure on me to get this done!). I'll bring my laptop and hope that the projector is available (Chuck, can you assist?). I had thought of doing a demo of the VideoLan client/server. Doug, would you like to volunteer to bring your laptop? We'll need a hub and some cables to build a network. Hi all, I just recompiled my kernel to add in acpi support for my laptop. When acpid tries to start, it tells me that it can't find /proc/acpi/event I know I've got it installed, how do I set up those files? I know better then to go mucking around in /proc w/o help! BTW, if there is anyone willing to help me convert my iPAQ to linux, I'll get the files together and be happy to meet you someone. LaLa Java on Route 9 in Shrewsbury is a great place for stuff like this (and they have some great tee-shirts). If anyone can help me with both these things, I'd greatly appreciate it. Wes --

My brush with greatness, 20 year anniversary

I've long had vague memories that I was present at the creation of the emoticon, but did not remember the details and had no proof---until now. Slashdot has a story about the first smiley, which links to a site that has a copy of a bulletin board thread from 1982. My contribution was the suggestion that the character should be chosen to look like something. It doesn't appear in the quoted part of the thread, but I remember advocating that the parenthesis should appear in balanced pairs, to form "joke brackets" which mark the beginning and end of the joke. This suggestion never caught on, which is a bit surprising because Scott Fahlman is a Lisp guy. I have actually never tried to sync with my ipaq (i mostly use FreeBSD as my workstation, and QT's sync software doesn't run on FreeBSD). There has been some work on getting sync framework in place for KDE called KitchenSync. Converting an iPAQ

For the last few months I've been hoping to save up some money and get a Zaurus, I don't think that it's going to happen any time soon. So, I've got an iPAQ that I can't sync, or even connect, with my linux laptop and it's beginning to get on my nerves. So, even though I've got some software on my iPAQ that I'll miss (a Bible Reader with the Greek Text and SimCity 2000), I'm thinking that it's time to take the plunge and get Linux and Qtopia on my 3835. Three Questions, 1. Has anyone on the list done this, especially with this model? 2. Has anyone who has done this used any of theKompany's embedded apps? 3. Is there anyone willing to help me do this face to face? I could do this on my own, but the idea of potentially owning a $599 paperweight dims my enthusiasm when I think of going it alone. (I'll buy the coffee) I've got a serial adapter, so that's not a problem. So, what do you say, anyone out there willing to teach me something new? Wes --

Free to a good home

Because the cable that's pigtailed on is busted and it doesn't do red very well anymore. The connector on the end of the cable is at 13W3. I would like to note that I have expressed WLUG's general displeasure with BUG to the president of BUG, Rick Zach. He told me that the calendar issue would be cleared up if we chose to renew our membership. Clint Moyer is quite correct when he points out that WLUG can afford the $50 if we so choose, but unfortunately we're not at five figures in the bank (unless you count the two figures for cents). :-) Certainly, if we did decide to renew, I would attend any/all BUG meetings, insure that WLUG had a presence at the MegaMeeting, etc. I did this last year after we paid our initial $50 membership fee. I'll sit back a bit longer and wait for any other comments from WLUG members on this topic. I'll probably close the topic by this weekend, unless the discussion is lively at that time. The history, BTW, is that Craig made the first 2.[12]* RPMs, and I modified them a bit somewhere around 2.20. They stayed about the same for 2.3, and then completely changed for 2.4 which gathered some errors which I then fixed earlier today. <shrug> It's an interesting project, Justin Mason (the original author) took 6-12 months off to travel around Asia and handed the project to Craig. I think that was around 2.1 or 2.2. Things have been progressing, 2.21, then 2.30, then 2.31, where it stayed for quite a while. Craig decided to start Deersoft for SpamAssassin Pro (Windows-based plugins for Outlook/Exchange), and somewhere in the same period Justin came back. So I'm now not sure who's actually in control of the project, but it's progressing still. I think this is part of the reason why 2.41 is due out shortly. There's been a whole heck of a lot of work put into the 2.40 code, and then the release sorta doesn't go out smoothly, and bugs are found (I'd like to slap the people who changed my Razor2 code) that apparently weren't fully tested with all the other changes. RH7.3 Questions -round 4

Attorney asks son for advice on breaking DMCA

Now that I have your attention (almost), my Dad recently bought one of the so-called copy-protected audio CDs and he is unable to rip it. As he regularly uses both a Rio while running and has a Rio receiver hooked up to the downstairs stereo, that's a real pain. I haven't looked at the CD myself yet so I don't know if I can use the Sharpie-over-the-corrupt-data-track trick, but has anyone else run into this and come up with a good solution? There's been a million Slashdot stories on the problem with no real resolution that I can find. I figured there would be an answer on this side of the pond if nothing else, but a Windows workaround would work too. Any ideas? My suggestion was, of course, to return the CD and write a nasty letter to the company about selling something labeled as a Compact Disc that does not conform to the Red Book standard, but that doesn't really fix the problem. It doesn't need to be PostScript--you can use ghostscript on your Linux box and print HPGL to the printer over port 9100. WPI uses mainly HP's in this manner. The modprobe did the trick - firewall (with a couple minor messages) and masquerading came right up. Then it took over an hour playing with the firewall which no longer allowed DHCP handshaking to occur (probably behaving right now, was acting wrong under RH7.0) so that I could access mail on this laptop (all the desktops have static IPs) I do plan to switch to IPtables, but I wanted the luxury of learning it first. Many installs of RHL 7.3 will add both ipchains and iptables. It could be that iptables is running instead of ipchains. I believe that both are actually compiled as modules so you might need to rmmod the one in order to use the other. (I've ususally had the reverse problem: I prefer iptables and usually have to unload ipchains in order to use it. Did not need to do anything with modules - had misinterpreted the install dialog and ifcfg-eth1 had BOOTPROTO=dhcp. eth1 should have been static with DHCP running from there. One unresolved issue - when I issue an IPChains command, the first time I get "IPchains incompatible with this kernel" and thereafter "IPChains protocol not available". The IPChains command is there, as for example "ipchains -h" works. But I haven't got masquerading or firewalling yet because of this.
