What do you mean when you say it seems broken? Are there other symptoms besides the java connection to it? Can you sit down at the machine and use X? If this is a server, you probably don't want that ability (that's where Xvfb comes in). What Xserver are you running? I'm guessing this is a server (the errors you showed before made it look more like a servlet than an applet)... So are you running X? If so, when you start the server do you set your DISPLAY variable correctly? Does the server process have access to the Xserver? If you're not running an Xserver, you need to. Weird, huh? Building RH7.3 server after 7.0 hacked -second request

SECOND REQUEST Additional information This does not appear to be just a problem with server (A). I cannot send mail between any of my three RH7.3 mail servers, but all will send mail locally, and all will send to / receive from the outside world. I am using a RH7.3 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc except for commenting out the DAEMON-OPTIONS line to allow outside mail, and turning off FEATURE(`accept_unresolvable_domains') Is there some change to the sendmail in RH7.3 of which I am unaware that could cause this? I would appreciate any suggestions of where to even look to solve this problem. ------------------------------ As some of you may recall from a mid-week email, two of my RH7.0 servers were badly hacked Tuesday about 5AM, and I lost ssh and think I received a trojan. Friday the hacking got worse - all outgoing mail was rejected as "relaying denied", so I decided to bite the bullet and format the drive and build a new server. This was made more interesting by the fact the RH7.3 wouldn't finish loading packages until I disconnected my second HD which previously held /var, and my web sites (tried 3-4 times) .. "Kernel unable to reread partition table on /tmp/hdc (device or resource busy)", then hung mid-package loading. Late Saturday afternoon I pulled the plug, and started a RH7.3 install. Midmorning I was done, including security patches and had no internet connection .. couldn't even ping from the server. Fortunately, it was just my ISP picking this time to be down for the first time in months. Now I have one remaining problem which over 8 hours of work has clarified, but not solved. Hi Tim, Thanks for the reply. The version of JDK differ the version I'm having issues with is 1.3.1_01 and the ones the code is running successfully is 1.3.0_02, however the graphs were being produced before. Peram, I'll ask an obvious question... You've verified that both machines running the same version of the java run time environment? Also, does the entire applet fail or does it just fail to display the graph. If so, you might have to insert some code to catch exceptions... Possibly some library has gotten mangled... are you running it from the comand line? or an applet? Get any errors on your command line? Did you try on the same machine booting 2.4.16 and 2.4.7 to verify that it is the kernel? Hi , I've a program that generates graphs with Java 1.3.1_01. The same program is able to generate graphs on a machine with RH 6.2 kernel 2.4.16 but it fails to generate graphs on a machine with RH 6.2 kernel 2.4.7-10 on which it used to generate before. I've installed KDE and gd thinking that something may broken in the OS on the jpegs generation part. But that doesn't seem to help. I'd appreciate if any of you gurus can guide me in this issue with your comments and suggestions. Building RH7.3 server after 7.0 hacked

As some of you may recall from a mid-week email, two of my RH7.0 servers were badly hacked Tuesday about 5AM, and I lost ssh and think I received a trojan. Friday the hacking got worse - all outgoing mail was rejected as "relaying denied", so I decided to bite the bullet and format the drive and build a new server. This was made more interesting by the fact the RH7.3 wouldn't finish loading packages until I disconnected my second HD which previously held /var, and my web sites (tried 3-4 times) .. "Kernel unable to reread partition table on /tmp/hdc (device or resource busy)", then hung mid-package loading. Late Saturday afternoon I pulled the plug, and started a RH7.3 install. Midmorning I was done, including security patches and had no internet connection .. couldn't even ping from the server. Fortunately, it was just my ISP picking this time to be down for the first time in months. Now I have one remaining problem which over 8 hours of work has clarified, but not solved. DHCPCD and ADSL modem

Hello, I have a ADSL modem. This modem containa DHCP server that I use. In my computer, I have dhcp client daemon (dhcpcd). The parameter of dhcp server is juste lease-time and IP adresse, but I would like to set a name of my computer and kown the name and IP adresse of other computer. If I configure a DDNS for make it, it's not a problem. How-to configure a DDNS updatefrom a dhcp server not configurable ? Thanks !

noseguy text

I'm a new member. I'm an elem. librarian in NE, Pa. near Binghamton,ny I just got approval and installed a linux box in our library to run a couple of demo programs worldwatch clock simulator and kstars. In screen saver I now run phosphores, which I have written text for using echo and printf in a bash shell. I would like to use noseguy but don't understand how it works?? I have read it likes to run fortunes, and yet when I use either the text files or .dat it won't read.Permission denial, chmod 777== can't execute binary?? Regular text files are not parsed and it deadlocks. What do you think? Should I write a program in python to parse a text file(out of my ken). There is probably something stupid I can't see TIA Re-v

What it sounds like to me is that there's two installations of SuSE on that machine, possibly. I use a similar setup due to laziness myself, where I have Lilo running on the Master Boot Record for /dev/hda, controlling which actual partition gets booted, then I have a bootloader like grub or lilo set up on each individual partition to boot that partition's OS. This enables me to run one disk sharing Debian and Win2K, and a second disk running Red Hat 8.0 (hdb1), SuSE 8.1 (coming soon to hdb2), and Gentoo (coming soon to hdb3). If you select Linux from the second boot menu that you get to, is it the same install that you have running now, or a different one? Either way though, it's basically a situation where there's one boot loader per hard drive that's causing it to happen. You could probably, with a little tinkering, get that second menu to go away by setting Windows to the default option and setting timer to 0, but it's probably not worth the effort.

Take a look at /etc/lilo.conf I expect you will see a line message=/boot/message and, if you try to cat /boot/message you will see gibberish (i.e. it is not ASCII but code for that SuSE window.) If you comment out/delete that message= line and then run lilo you should no longer see the SuSE stuff, If you wish, you can now add a line message=/boot/mymessage where mymessage is just a text file to echo whatever reminders you want at boot time. For example, I have used lines like for linux type l for windows type w (where my lilo.conf has lines label=l and label=w to match; I am lazy and like to type just one letter). Alternatively, you have no message= line and just use tab to list the options. doug

I have a backup script that uses tar to back up files to disk. It does a full backup monthly, full backup weekly(file recycled monthly), incremental backups daily(file recycled weekly). I've heard of 160GB drives for ~$117, which is roughly ~$0.73 per GB (if you're on the SAGE mailing list, you've seen that thread...) I've used BRU in the past. I'm not that excited about it. It seems bascly to be a GUI front end to TAR Most backup utils seem to be geared towards tapes. Since i'm backing up to hard drives its a littele different. I'm still expermenting with my custom tar scripts, thanks for the suggestions tho. I just started using arkeia the other day, and I'm rather impressed so far. They give you a 2 client license of version 4.2 for free (so you can backup the server, and 2 linux or windows clients) if you're using a linux backup server. You can make backups to tape or disk with it. Plus it has a little bit of eye candy; while backups are running, you can log in with the gui client (java client that works on a bunch of platforms) and see the speed at which the backups are running in a speedometer style display ... Hey, what can I say, I like pretty things :) I'm not sure if this is feasible at all, but could you use software raid and mirror your normal disk to the removeable one? I have successfully booted into windows but found some interesting behaviors along the way. It appears that I must have swapped the hard drives at some point. The latest OS resides on hda1. Using YaST2 I added another boot definition pointing to windows on hdb1. FYI...YaST behaves differently when launched from within X than when launched from a shell with no X. After rebooting I get the lilo prompt to select an OS. I select windows and am then presented another lilo prompt (SuSE 7.0?) to select an OS. After choosing windows a second time, windows is successfully launched. This accomplishes what I need...but it would be nice to understand what is happening so I could get rid of the second OS prompt. Obviously I have done several installs on my system onto different drives. I have read the man page for lilo.conf and understood only a fraction of what it was trying to tell me. I did not rejumper the drives. I believe I told SuSE to use the second drive and ignore the first. I may be wrong about this since it was awhile ago that I did the initial install. I do know that I am not asked whether or not to boot windows. Yast2 does have the ability to modify lilo. This is either not stable or allows the users to screw up because Yast2 appears to be locked on my laptop after going into the configuration tool :( Normally I would reject the idea of switching to Grub at this point but since SuSE 8.x is using it I am willing to entertain the idea. Sure will. I know that YaST has a tool for Lilo config under the System Administration tool; just use that to set things up and you should be golden. Obviously, select the drive with the Windows install on it for the partition. Absolutely! I'm guessing you rejumpered the drives to make the second drive the primary. I'd recommend using grub as your boot loader. You can install it in the MBR of the drive that has Windows on it, rejumper the drives, and simply change /etc/mtab to reflect the new state of the world. Grub is nice, in that it allows you to tweak your boot "ini" file during the boot process in case you made a mistake. I neglected to mention one little detail. When I bought the computer it came with windows98 installed one harddrive and a second unformatted drive. I did a new install of SuSE onto the second harddrive. This effectively made windows unavailable. I have not done anything to the first drive other than mount it as a fat partition. Installfest

I have a request that is sacrilege to the charter of WLUG. However it is driven by the practicality of working in todays IT market place. I have run linux exclusively on my personal computers for quite awhile. My situation has changed and now need to make one of my computers a dual boot with windows. The only way I know how to do this is to install windows first and then linux. This would mean having to restore my current installation from backups which I have not done before. My preference would be to add windows leaving my linux installation alone. I am still a newbie to linux and do not understand lilo and the boot process. backup recomendation

What do people out there use for backup tools. Anyone use Amanda? Any good? My situation is I have three servers I wish to backup. The total amount of data to be backup'd is 40GB. I wish to do weekly or monthly full backups with daily incremental. Plan A: Monthly Level 0, weekly Level 1, daily Level 2 Plan B: Weekly Level 0, daily Level 1 Plan C: Monthly Level 0, weekly level 0, daily level 1 Then every month I'd like to take one of the full backups and put it away for long term storage. My backup media is a 120GB IDE disks in a removable drive trays. Take them home for off site storage. One thing I'm trying now is: rsync the three servers to the local 120 GB disk. From local disk create tar files. Bad part about it is I have to store an extra 40GB on the disk of local copies of the servers. I can't just tar over NFS, because the files on the server may be changing as the tar is created. Tar bitches when that happens. My optimal solution: keep all files on the servers. Possibly use a small local scratch area(1 G or so). Create local backups and store them to the 120GB removable disk. I would like to use free software if possible. RH7.0 Hacked

I have two RH7.0 and two RH7.3 servers ... it appears that between 5-6am Tuesday both the 7.0 servers were hacked - identically. They are on the same ISP and often their firewalls pick up the same scans and probes. I'm no expert, but this is what I think happened. The first clue was that I couldn't log in through ssh - got the message "The program does not understand the servers's version of the protocol" Looking at /var/log/secure I saw: 10/22 5:34 xinetd fail ftp libwrap from 195.157.17.177 then two fails from 127.0.0.1 I'm running an unpatched wu-ftpd (which I'm sure didn't help me) but the host.allow/deny were set to only allow ftp from the internal network and one specified outside IP# 10/22 5:48 (twice) xinetd start pop3 pid=10804 from 127.0.0.1 [not me-sleeping] 10/22 6:09 Listener created on port 22 Daemon is running Some poking around showed in /etc/ssh sshd (which should have been approx 200K was 2,621,812 and dated 10/22, so probably a trojan? ssh_host_key, ssh_host_key_pub, ssh_random_seed, sshd_config all had 10/22 modified dates My web server also was not running (or at least serving local pages) I accidently rebooted, the web server came back, but ssh did not. Later I attempted to delete and reinstall sshd. rpm said it couldn't uninstall because it wasn't there, and couldn't install because it was there. I think it finally installed with --force, and sshd was about 186K, but the symptoms were the same It turns out that ftp is also now not operational from the internal network. There is a message about xinetd/ftp in the startup, but its probably not important at this point After the reboot, ps -ax listed: 1811 D /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major 7 [which I could not kill] Obviously, I'm going to have to wipe the server (plan to offload a few .conf and mail config files, firewall script and leave /var/www - should that be safe?) and will probably load RH7.3 and patches. Did you not run redhat's up2date program? I agree with marc that you should have ftp client access to ftp from that machine to another. You probably still have ftp or ssh access from that machine, so you can copy your data off of it onto another server. But I'd say your best bet is unplug it from the internet, copy off all your data (not programs!), wipe clean, and reinstall. You never know what kinds of rootkits were installed, and you can't rely on any system info to be accurate since some rootkits are rather advanced. Restarting ldap by user, not by root!

HI all, Can u please help me to solve this problem...... There is several users are configuring LDAP in my server. I give them access to modify the LDAP's configuration by giving o+rwx and create the link for LDAP in their home directory. By this they can modify the L:DAP configuration. The big problem is, they always ask me to restart the ldap (/etc/rc.d/init.d/ldap restart), in fact... I'm so bussy.... Talk to the clients..... can my users ( group users ) able to restart the ldap by executing /etc/rc.d/init.d/ldap restart.... how can i grant the read and write access to the defined directory which belong to root ? Aramico, I've noticed, since you posts started appearing, that you seem to be asking for help on topics that are generally well-covered on the internet. But perhaps you are new enough to all this (as I was several years ago) that you don't realize that the purpose of forums like this is to add a level of enrichment to the research work that you've (hopefully) already done. It might be a better use of all of our time if you did some of that research yourself and came back with specific questions after having done so. The answer to the question you ask below specifically is answered quite well in HOWTOs that are readily available. I'll infer for a moment that your question is based on your sucessfull installation of RHL8.0 that you were asking about earlier. To find more information about any installed package do... rpm -q <package-name> -i So for your iptables question, I'd do this: rpm -q iptables -i Among the info listed here is a key to finding out how to use it: URL: : http://www.netfilter.org If you were to follow that link, you'll find plenty of answers to the exact question your pose. (Scroll to the bottom of the page and select NAT HOWTO. Look for "4.1 I just want masquerading! Help!" ) Also, most RPMs have a certain amout of enclosed documentation that will vary in its helpfulness. Do a rpm -q <package-name> -l | grep doc or substitute "info" or "man" for the "doc" above. Making an attempt to read those would also be a good first step to implementing new facilities on systems you are using. You might be pleasantly surprized about how many of these questions have been already anticipated *and* answered! Finally, doing a google search (http://www.google.com) might also surprize you pleasantly about locating these resources quickly. Actually, on linux.com someone suggested that programmers organize a nation-wide walk-out in protest. I thought maybe every IT worker in the country should get sick for about a week... Problem Solved!

I figured out my SMP / X problem. For some reason the AGPGART and RADEONFB modules aren't loading automatically like they do in the single cpu kernel. But if I modprobe them, X works fine. Thanks anyways guys! -Marc

XFree86 SMP Woes

I just installed a second processor, installed an SMP kernel, and booted into it. At first, everything seemed great, I can do massive compiles, top shows both CPU's, and things go pretty zippy. BUT... I can't start X. sendmail/RH8.0

After upgrading to RedHat 8.0, I'm being forced to learn more about sendmail that I have time to invest, so I need some help. Previously, I had used linuxconf to set up Linux server at work (EMC) that would forward most email to the domain mail server -- I'm not trying to manage mail for the company. One twist... I want to define a few aliases. My linuxconf setup worked great -- I could send email to aliasname(a)thismachine.emc.com, and the /etc/alias file would be used to translate "aliasname" to a list of addresses. With the new split sendmail config, I'm floundering. I've made a few tweaks that were necessary to allow the machine to act as an internal relay (I need some security help here, too), but I'm still fighting a mail loop problem. So, here are my specific questions/requirements: 1. I want to send to an alias on "thismachine.emc.com" from anywhere inside emc. 2. I want the same aliases to be used for email originating from "thismachine". 3. I don't want to create a relay security hole. I'll send my sendmail.mc and submit.mc files upon request. TIA, Bill

Hi all, how nice r u doin 2day ? Ehmm, okay....... Btw, I itend my self to build a new redhat 8. I've my server running perfect with RedHat 7.3 already. Can somebody tell me that about the recomendation to use redhat 8 ? Is redhat 8 having better performance than 7.3 ? What is something that speacially i have to know before creating a new machine with redhat 8 ? well, I'll replace my rh 7.3 server if rh 8 if Rh 8 can be trusted to rum my webserver which doin' streaming, music and movie streaming...... Easier way ;-) 1) Login 2) Open a terminal 3) run "sudo passwd" 4) type in your password 5) give root a new password To items of note: 1) My Mac OS has been much happier since I starting installing software at an administrator rather than as root. OS X Firewall? (#2)

OS X firewall ?

I put the question to the list because I think its related enough to be of interest. My wife just got a top-of-the-line iBook with OS X from school. Connects to the network at school instantly as it should. (I am brand new on OS X) At home I run an network based on a RH7.0 box with IpMasq and some servers going to a static-IP DSL line. About 10 machines, mixed Win and Mac, mixed static and DHCP. When she starts up the iBook: a) the DHCP server on the Linux box shows the normal DHCPREQUEST and DHCPACK lines. b) the Network panel on the iBook shows all the values I would expect to have been handed off by DHCP, 192.168.1.x IP, 255.255.255.0 mask, 192.168.1.1 gateway c) but unable to connect to the internet I found "Terminal" and was able to: d) ping the linux box e) do a nslookup against the name server on the linux box, resolving outside domain names f) bring up web pages running on the Apache server on the linux box But I don't seem to be able to get outside I thought the first thing to try would be to disable the IP Firewall that's being started on the iBook, but haven't been able to figure out how (or where its files are). BTW I run a fairly strict firewall on the linux box and the log shows no hits related to the iBook attempting to get outside. Or I could be totally off base, in which case I would be open to other avenues towards fixing this. Less related: There is an Apple Select 360 appletalk laserwriter on the network, connected thru an Asante appletalk/ethernet bridge which my wife has used with her G3. She can select it through the chooser on the iBook, and we can read and set printer config info, but although everything appears normal when printing for an application in OS9 classic, nothing gets to the printer (and no blinking green light indicating data transfer). To look at the firewall settings though (at least in 10.2.x): System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall You can also use the BSD standard ipfw, although I haven't used it at all so ... It looks like "ipfw list" will tell you what you want as well.
