This might be of interest: http://www.fail2ban.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page Basically, it detects hack attempts and locks off the offending IP address for about five minutes by modifying firewall rules. I've only started looking at it myself, but I know others that use it and it seems to work well. It most definitly is. If you expose a box with default ports for any amount of time you'll see all sorts of fun stuff taking a wack at it. If you need to connect from random places, and you can keep your keys safe, going key only and then moving the port is probably going to keep you pretty safe. I tried to move the port but a firewall (or two) is blocking the high level stuff so I have to trace through and see where it is. I can't block the IP Address because the ip is different with each username. Does anybody have any good ideas on how to stop this? Funky LVM hack we talked about...

Hey Gang, For those of you at the meeting who don't remember, Kevin had a 32GB flash disk that had a controller that had a built in understanding of FAT32. Thus formatting it as any other file system would work until you actually wrote to it then it would go insane. I postulated that one way to solve this would be to use LVM or MD, however when we tried this I hit a road block in that pvcreate won't let you pvcreate a regular old file, you need a device file, the same thing with MD. I finally managed to get it to work without having to hand add any devices into /dev... here's how... For my testing I created 4 100MB files using the command: dd if=/dev/zero of=part[1-4] bs=1024k count=100 This is what Kevin would need to do to on his flash drive... 1. Create 16, 2GB files on the flash drive named part[1-16] 2. Create loopback to file mappings using the command "losetup /dev/loop1 part1", repeat for all devices Also note, with this you could setup loopback encryption on these devices... If you suddenly find yourself without a loopback device issue the command in /dev "./MAKEDEV loop" However, I think udev will probably take care of it behind the scenes. 3. pvcreate /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 ... 4. vgcreate vgHACK /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 ... At this point if you issue a "vgdisplay" you should see how many (PE) physical extents you have. 5. lvcreate -n volume_name -l num_of_extends vgHACK If you use -L you can specify 300M, etc. Also you can specify how many stripes you want the data to be written in, which is handy if your 16 devices were on seperate disk controllers... Also you don't have to use all the extends in one logical volume, you could create lots of little volumes. 6. mkfs.ext3 /dev/vgHACK/volume_name 7. mount filesystem, sit back in bemusement that linux gives you the flexibility to do such things. Now... while were at it, if instead of LVM, if you wanted to use MD, this is what you'd do. If you have the lvm stuff from above, unmount the filesystem and issue a vgremove vgHACK it'll warn about active volumes, blah, blah... This command will take loop1,loop2,loop3,loop4 and put them into a 4 member RAID0 with no spare. mdadm -C /dev/md0 -l 0 -n 4 /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 This command will create a raid5 out of the four devices without a spare. mdadm -C /dev/md0 -l 0 -n 4 /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 It'll go off and build the array, now just format and mount and you're set to go. cat /proc/mdstat to see what it's upto. I was thinking of other insane things that Kevin can do with his 3 32GB flash disks. He could create 3 logical volumes each containing 16 members and then create an raid5 MD device using the logical volume members... He could create 3 16 member raid0's and then create a raid 5 out of them. He could install ZFS on top of fuse and then put all 48 devices into a zpool... Just to bridge the gap... Andy, I'm copying this to the local Ubuntu Community (LoCo) Team (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MassachusettsTeam) as although I can never make these meetings myself, I thought someone else there might be able to, and might be interested in demoing. It is short notice, though... Also, it might be interesting to compare with the latest beta of Intrepid (8.10) as that's due out next month, and I believe KDE's gone through a major change between the two releases. (redhat,fedora)(LONG) yum.repos.d? for local-net base RPMs

Hi! I had imperfect luck googling the best/easiest answer to this one. Maybe I just need a good "yum book/tutorial". I may have solved (poorly or OK) my "simulated challenge" (planning for an RHCE exam) which is: Let's say I had no Internet, but I did have RedHat RPM's on a local server, so doing a new-install with JUST the first boot cd, then linux askmethod (chose ftp/nfs/http, whatever the server's offering) And did the install using network'd RPMs. Later, say I wanna "yum install" something-else missed earlier, without manually pointing to RPMs. (keep using yum, without Internet). Out of the box, yum didnt adjust itself to my "askmethod" location. Tis on the RHCE exam prep list: "configure to update/install pkgs from remote repositories using yum or pup" I'll attempt (poorly,toomuch...) to finetune a more specific QUESTION: .....................How to modify the yum (config or yum.repos.d/files) IN ORDER TO: either REPLACE ( I managed this) or ADD TO (more intelligently) to use a local-network source for "base RPMs" (whatever comes on the .iso CD/DVD's , a likely RPM stash/set) Here's one answer that might be OK in the isolated situation: a) Comment OUT primary line in /etc/yum.repos.d/*file within [base] (ymmv, "baseurl" or "mirrorlist" line, look for comments/fallbacks) then b) add ONE LINE "baseurl=ftp:...", whatever the server's offering. CNR updating?

I would have expected some kind of notification that software updates are available for applications, but I see nothing indicating that I should update things. When you're done, blow away all the old disk stuff, then add it into the RAID1 md0 device as the other half of the mirror. The KEY thing to realize here is that to make sure your system can continue to boot properly, you will need: - bootloader on both disk's MBRs - a non-RAID1 boot partition on both disks - testing, testing, testing. That's a bit of overkill though. I think there's a small combination dhcp / dns server that does this automatically although the name escapes me at the moment. The other (and very simple solution that I use) is just to edit /etc/hosts and add ips / dns names. You'll have to update it on each machine and update it if anything changes but if you only need it for one computer it's not too bad. Try to look on intel's website for a driver, although you might have to roll your own. I looked quickly on the AIX page but I couldn't find the HCL (Hardware compatibility list). Hello, At work, I have an RS6000 running AIX 5.3. The on-board NIC controller failed. I installed a dual-port Intel Pro 10/100/1000 NIC card. When I start the server, the Intel card isn't recognized. We have many students that could benefit from the hands on learning that can only be made available through private donations. As one of three instructors here at the Shriver Job Corps Center , I would personally see to all systems being cleaned of private information by wiping all internal hard drives using DOD, (Department Of Defense), Standards. Each operating PC would then be entered into our training program for our students as a break/fix computer. If you know of anyone who may be interested in participating for the sake of our students, please pass along this note. Although all donations will be greatly appreciated it would not be a tax write-off but you will be able to sleep better knowing that you have helped aspiring technicians learn a trade and become active working participants in this great country of ours. I created .xinitrc file in my home directory that contains exec startkde then I ran startx and kde started up. I have to recreate some settings and configurations, but it looks like it's working. KDE died on me

Hello, KDE 3.5.9 died on me. I installed some updates via the adept updater and after rebooting, I get dropped into run-level 3 (which I actually prefer). When I type startkde, which is in /usr/bin, I get the following errors: Xsetroot : unable to open display '' Xset : unable to open display "" Xsetroot : unable to open display '' Startkde : Starting up. . . Startkde : Running kpersonalizer. . . Kwin : X server can not connect to Kpersonalizer can not connect to X server : Kpersonalizer can not connect to X server : Kpersonalizer can not connect to X server : If I type startx instead, the gnome window manager starts up fine. I believe versions 6.1 - 6.6 were affected. The issue I had was that the second file/dir argument onwards was not properly tallied. So, using your example, jigdo would show a size of 1 if it were run as: >du -smxc yum jigdo but if you changed the command line to: >du -smxc jigdo yum Then jigdo would show the correct size of 48. -BR

Hello everyone, my name is Markus McLaughlin, I am both a member of the Fedora Project and a Linux blogger with a blog at http://linuxglobe.wordpress.com. About 5 years ago, I became a fan of Linux but did not actually use it until I bought my first Mac, which was a Mini, I now use an Intel iMac and I run Fedora 9, Ubuntu 8.04, and openSUSE in VMware Fusion. I want to reach out to other Linux hobbyists AND writers who want to promote Linux. What I want to do with my blog is to add other Writers who want to both promote Linux and help those who don't know what to do with it, with columns. Hopefully, Red Hat, Novell, and other companies will want to help fund a major Linux Magazine right here in North America. I want to help fill a niche that needs to be filled and HELP those who can't afford a Windows/Mac computer have free tools, internet access, and an inexpensive used laptop/desktop. Brian, This particular problem is only related (as far as I can tell) to RSA key generation. If you've not done this, then you should be okay. I would still recommend bringing your OpenSSL lib up-to-date, as it is, indeed, used for secure web browsing as well (although firefox may statically link with it's own version to avoid just such problems ... ) So yeah, in short, if you don't have a key that you use to sign e-mail or for access to another computer, then you're probably fine. This is still probably of interest to the rest of the group, though, since there was recently a key-signing party, and with the proliferation of Ubuntu and Debian, I'm betting that a significant number of those keys will be compromised. I'm trying to set up Echolink (amateur radio software) on Ubuntu (through WINE). My computer failed the firewall tests -the troubleshooting material recommended the following: Allow UDP destination ports 5198-5199 between Internet and PC in both directions Allow TCP (source port any, destination port 5200) from PC to Internet What security risks do I introduce by doing this? It's too late now, it's been two months since she got this setup, my first time down to visit and see it. The annoying part is that the TV has 8+ inputs, but she only uses two of them, and I cannot turn off the rest of them so she can't see them by default. Total pain in the butt. Meeting Topic Idea - MythTV

WLUG'ers, I have a meeting topic idea but very little knowledge of the proposed topic, MythTV. I have a DVR through my cable provider, Charter, but am unhappy with it's features and capacity. I am ready to buy a capture card, re-dedicate some PC hardware and commit to building a Myth box. I know this was covered back in 2003 by Tim Keller, but my lack of recall has me missing details of his excellent presentation. Any others think this is a good idea for a meeting topic? If so, would anyone indulge by presenting Myth with their knowledge, hardware info (PC spec and video spec) and setup & install details? Joel

It does not have an external power source, to answer eric's question. I got a hold of a Y cable, but that didn't seem to help at all. One labtop is linux and the other labtop is OS X. They both were able to see the drive fine and mount it with the single USB cable, not the Y cable. Currently the drive is formated hfs since i was testing it with the OS X labtop. I find it strange that it can half see the drive. fdisk can see the drive and partition it, but if you try to format the drive you get nothing by read errors on just about every sector on the hard drive. When i get back to my apartment, i will try Eric's suggestion on seeing if a jump drive (which i assume is the same thing as a usb flash drive) can be read by my mythtv box. Sadly, most Idiot Service Providers seem to be totally unable to answer email from customers. They are only interested in phone calls from people who have no email. Speakeasy has someone who knows what is and who answers email at 2am Sunday faster than most of them can get an sales droid to pick up the phone during business hours. Anyway, I run a primary name server while they run a couple of secondaries and reverse DNS. I think I may have an officially "dynamic" IP address, but it was set up before DHCP. Yes, that's a good idea. That's why I did it about four years ago. It works well, maybe sending mail through Speakeasy is not really necessary, but I seem to remember that I had a problem with rejected mail when I sent it from my own machine. Maybe something else was wrong, but it's not too broken now, so I don't fix it. -- Keith PS: The answer to the original question was that I use SPF for outgoing mail, but not incoming. It works, but maybe anything else would work as well. Maybe something else would work better. Outgoing SPF requires setting up a Domain Name Server. Once that works it's easy. Example zone records were in the original answer. Incoming SPF reqires setting up an SMTP server. Even after the SMTP server is working, setting up SPF is fairly complicated. Maybe there is a distribution that does most of the setup for you.

Linux System Admin recommendations?

As the company has become more successful we need help supporting them. We are looking for a team of folks who are passionate about technology and know open source to provide thoughtful, reliable system administration services for our Redhat linux os systems. We have made some bad choices in the past, and as a result received service that has hurt us. We don't know where to look for guidance in choosing, and we are hoping the user group can recommend some good folks who will be there when we need them with depth of knowledge and abilities in performing routine maintenance as well as emergency support when we need it. In that case, it's a matter of editing /etc/dhclient.conf (or /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf) and making use of the following or similar lines: supersede domain-name "example.com"; prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1; I think you can use supersede, prepend, and append for any of the above, but the documentation can tell you for sure. I don't forward through Speakeasy and I've never had a problem with rejected mail. Of course my Speakeasy DSL has multiple static IPs, which might make a difference. DNS settings

I run 4 Linux mailservers and do all my own DNS for multiple domains Yesterday (I think) one account on one domain got about 500 emails similar to what you described in a period of about 30 minutes. I have SPF records on many of my domains (because it was so simple to set up), and promptly added it to the DNS of the domain of the affected account. Today the number of such emails was down at least 10x, but I can't say for sure it was the SPF that did it. Is the external USB drive self-powered? Did you power-cycle it at any point? The device itself might have gotten wedged. It might have shown up as /dev/sda* on some of those interim reboots, depending on whether there were any other usb storage devices present. "lsusb", and the tail command Eric suggested, are your friends. What is sda currently? [ these work on 2.6.23, not sure about earlier kernels ] $ cat /sys/block/sda/device/model $ cat /sys/block/sdb/device/model Anyway, glad to hear it at least works again. -Jamie

Missing /dev files

Then I noticed that all of my /dev/sdb* files were missing from /dev. When I do an ls -al /dev, all the files are there except the sdb files. How can I get these back? In a nutshell... I'm using ftp right now (proftpd) and I have it configured the way I want and it works well... I just wanted to update to the latest version or see if there were any security updates and found the website unaccessible... As for the chroot features... I currently use them for proftpd and I purchased the commercial version of SSH that includes chroot. I'm psyched to see that they'll be supporting it soon since it's a feature I look for. However, my current plan is to reimplement my current configuration using vsftpd, because at least in my eyes, vsftpd is a known quantity and under development. I know this mostly because I needed to integrate sftp into an existing proftpd setup, without changing the directory structure and how it works. So what happens when you type 'emerge mysql' on your box? I haven't done Gentoo in a *long* time, but that's probably the starting point. You need to make sure you have both the mysql server running, as well as the client on your system. I want to get myth tv installed. My problem is that I can not get to the mysql prompt. Once I get there, I think I can follow the gentoo setup guides for mySql and myth TV. I just bought my new system from Newegg with an ATI 1600 silent (fanless) PCIe graphics card. This is good news for future improvements! More details on my new system if people are interested, but basically a nice moterboard, AMD 5200 CPU, 4gb (2x2g) RAM, graphics, disk and a power supply for $500. I'm happy. John

AMD Releases 3D Programming Documentation

JOB - Linux Applications, C/C++ contract openings

Our client in northern MA has 2 openings for Linux Application Engineers. These are 4 + mths contracts. The work includes some design, full implementation of code, code reviews, integration with hardware and other software, writing test plans, and executing test plan. Linux, multithreaded, multiprocessor, strong C/C++ (emphasis on C++), strong debugging, good communication skills, and team player. Most of our Linux applications are user space processes that are in C++, use a lot of interprocess communications both on the same processor and on other processors in the system. I don't know what desktop/window manager you're using (or which Fedora includes, actually), but you have tried a more lightweight alternative? Xfce is one I hear recommended regularly, it's pretty slick. I still won't give up Window Maker no matter how many iterations of hardware I go through. ;) Brian J. Conway

Fedora Disapointment

I understand that my laptop is old. Every time I've upgraded Red Hat/Fedora, I've liked the new system until Fedora 8. I didn't always upgrade. I skipped Fedora 7 since the live CD didn't boot on my laptop but Fedora 6 ran great. Fedora 8 is a dog with my small amount of memory (256M). I'm thinking I'll buy more memory but it disappoints me that Fedora runs poorly with 256M. (I would buy a new laptop but I'm just not impressed with the current offerings.) Any volunteers? Failing that, I doubt folks would be interested in seeing a real XO laptop. ;-) I could bring one if people are interested. That would give me incentive to learn how to use most of the programs. However, there isn't any VGA output, so I don't know how to get the image on the screen where an audience could see it. VNC perhaps? I'm not sure. I'll play with it over the weekend. For external connections, the machine has USB ports, wireless (WEP only), microphone and speaker jacks.
