Fedora freezes

I have been experiencing freezes with Fedora 10. For no apparent reason, the machine just stops. No mouse, no keyboard (no ctrl alt F1 or ctrl alt del). I can only reboot with the on-off switch. Any ideas as to what I can check? Thanks! Walt

I'm running ubuntu 8.04 on Dell 1525n (laptop) and had sound problems out of the box when it arrived April 2008 with ubuntu 7.10 installed. I had it fixed within 24 hours. Then various kernel updates have had sound working or not, seemingly randomly. Now I'm running 8.04, with working sound in kernel 2.6.24-22 generic, which as I recall, did not need extra effort to get it working... they have it right in that one. I think we tested the later kernel and sound was broken again. Getting it going: I would first do Kieran's step 4 before starting to remove obsolete config files & that stuff. If you get any indication your sound is trying to work, go see about the switches in Alsamixer then. We have a new Gregbuilt* desktop in here, which runs ubuntu 8.04 very very nicely. But even in this, we had to set some sound switches oddly --labels on some of these speakers (front, back, etc) did not seem to correspond correctly. So it took some tweaking. If you are running on a Dell laptop (I saw something in your lspci output that mentioned Dell), and if all else fails, I would roll back to ubuntu 8.04 --the kernel I have working here --until the forums quit reporting broken sound.in intrepid. I like ubuntu hardy very well. I can share my amixer output (how switches are set in ALSA) if needed, or other config files or whatever. Your mileage may differ, but there may be some use in checking out what works here. However, I have the nagging worry that maybe I didn't have to go through all of it (the steps 1 to 5) and that maybe I just had to futz around with the volume levels and other settings to get everything to work. I am running mythbuntu on a P4 Compaq returned business lease computer that I originally just picked up to get the Windows XP COA (ironic that I am not even running Windows on it at all). I added a couple of Hauppauge tuners (PVR350 and PVR150, now swapped to a single PVR500), an Nvidia 5200 AGP card with TV-out, a 120GB HDD, 1GB RAM and a DVD-RW optical drive. The PVR-350 came with a remote control and sensor. When I found that I only had to replace a couple of capacitors on the motherboard, I couldn't resist running it for a while. It fits on the AV rack since its a desktop form factor. There are tons of these things out there for under $100 plus shipping. You will likely need to make a couple of upgrades, but there are quite inexpensive, the correct form factor and not very loud at all. There is a small processor fan and the power-supply takes care of exhausting the heat. Just an option, and the COA, although not intended to be transferred, has at least some value, somewhere. check out GearXS.com and maybe ecost.com for a general list of available units. Which model of Dell is it? I can tell you that they're a pain with sound. Search for your model and "sound" at the ubuntu forum, and see what others have done. Try different settings in gnome-sound-preferences - you might need to set all devices to ALSA, or you might need to set them all to Pulse Audio, as the person in this thread did - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=997506 Search for Dell in that thread - post#70 just changed to a newer kernel than the one on the install CD and got sound to work. If all else fails, drop back to 8.04, and one of our WLUG members who has a Dell laptop with sound working will lend you her config files. I had a similiar problem with my Gentoo system with KDE. I spent a large ammount of time checking out ALSA, kernel configuration etc... and I only got sound only after turning on my front mike input (in the output section). no sound from ubuntu

Hi, first post here! I'm a part-time Linux user, with experience on Mandrake and Fedora. After installing ubuntu 8.10, I find that my computer is very quiet, even when I don't want it to be! The only sound I can get is the beep when the arrow keys reach a limit, such as scrolling to the end of a list, or the end of a command line. The master volume is high, I have permission to Use Audio Devices, nothing is muted, am I missing something basic??? I've been to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems> and lots of links from there. Learned a lot, accomplished little. :) I can turn off the beep (alert) in Sound Preferences, but I can't turn on other sounds, (Rhythmbox, youtube, etc.) Some info I picked up is shown below. GIMP tutorials

A couple of WLUG members had been interested in GIMP a few months back. A presentation I gave to the group last Fall may have been effective that it could have been, since we couldn't get the big monitors working in the meeting room. holy penguins!! my average boot time with various forms of ubuntu on disk or USB thumb drive is about 1 minute. Moblin is 30 seconds!! I'm impressed now.

Lenovo S10 Netbook

I picked one of these up at Circuit City last week and am looking to speed it up where ever possible. (Reviewed below). It has a normal SATA II drive in it and I know an SSD drive would significantly speed it up, but don't want to spend any more $ on it. http://www.trustedreviews.com/storage/review/2008/05/08/OCZ-64GB-SATA-II-SS… has pretty graphs to compare. I weaseled a RAM upgrade out of my hard ware guy so I have 1.5gigs in it now (max'd). I ran speed tests between booting off the SATA II drive and the same install via USB 2.0 thumb drive and boot times were around 50 seconds for either. I know there are SSD ExpressCards for cheap (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820191057) but I read that the ExpressCards are really just USB 2.0 speeds anyway so I wouldn't see any difference from my thumb drive test. Short of compiling my own kernel (which I never can seem to do right), any other advise on how to speed up a netbook's boot time? I will say once booted, everything runs pretty well, though I'm sure I wouldn't mind more speed then, too! grazie! Mike Review: Stopped in to Circuit City today and (impulsively?) bought a Lenovo IdeaPad S10. I've been looking for something to waste my money on/replace the Dell I bought that I ended up not liking and turning over to my wife, so it wasn't extremely impulsive, just a little impulsive. Anyway, it was 10% of the normal price, which brought it down to $370. Not a great deal at that price since online it is like $350 or so, but the one I got has twice as much RAM and hard drive space as online numbers, plus no shipping. Specs: Intel Atom N270 1.6ghz CPU (Intel has returned to multi-threading) 10.2 inch screen 1GIG RAM 160Gig SATA II Hard drive Wired/Wireless NIC cards 3 Cell Lithium-Ion 2.64lbs No CDROM (not a big deal as I have a Lenovo USB CDROM drive anyway) The size: possibly the perfect size...small, light weight without being tiny. 10.2 inch 1024x600 screen and not an impossibly tiny keyboard (though obviously not full sized). It is about the size of a larger hard cover book. The OS: Comes with Windows XP and it ran very well...applications opened fast, web surfing was responsive and I could open several apps at once without much hit to performance. After 27 different questions about my loyalty to Bill Gates, I decided it was time to upgrade. Concerned that the new hardware may have issues with older versions of Linux, I jumped right into an as-yet-to-be released version of Ubuntu (9.04). Booted right up, answered a couple questions and installed like a champ...saw the disk, the RAM, the wireless card, everything...during the install. Upon reboot into Linux though, nothing...it just wouldn't boot. "No OS found". I thought my partitioning might be screwing me up, so I let the installer pick, but to no avail. I booted off live CD's, but when I mounted and chroot'd into my install, the install didn't even see my /dev/sda. At one point I finally got to a grub > boot, but still wouldn't boot to the OS. I tried a Debian 4.0 install, but that didn't see either the wired or wireless nics. Similar to the Ubuntu, Fedora 10 installed, but would never boot. So I tried a Ubuntu 8.10 install and everything was fine! Installed with my partitions (/boot, /, /home and swap) and all is well in the world. Wired, wireless, SATA, screen resolution....everything works straight from the install. I'm still testing and upgrading but over all this is a great netbook and takes to Ubuntu Linux straight away, and for less than $400 a great addition to my daily commute.

I actually had this working just fine with Ruby Threads, but then I found out that Ruby has a single thread for the interpretter, and jsut emulates real threads. So no performance gain. Now I'm working on forking() off kids to do the work, but the coordination is being painful. Anyone interested in what I've got? John

Linux at 35,000 feet

Hi All, I took a trip on DirectAir to Florida this past weekend. I flew out of Worcester on a direct flight to Punta Gorda, Fl. I wish I could say it was for pleasure but that would not be true :( Anyway the airline is a public charter owned by Virgin America and operated by Jet Blue. What does this have to do with Linux? Each seat had a monitor with a gaming remote control. The passengers had the choice of watching TV or movies. They could also listen to many different radio stations or select by artist. I found it refreshing to put on some Jimmy Hendricks and Frank Zappa. The last, or was it first, option available were games. Our friend Tux appeared in two of the games and the rest were available on all modern distributions of Linux. I spent a fair amount of time playing Doom. When you board the plane it feels very modern. There is a pleasant blue glow to the cabin. First and second class is separated by clear Plexiglas so the cabin feels very open. The mandatory speech about safety is done by video and is appropriately smart-alecky. All in all it was a great experience. Look them up if you need to travel on the east coast. Oh yeah, tickets were $99 each way. Happy Travels, Mike

Sean makes good sense. Most people won't be interested in switching to another operating system. But I think an exercise in the durability of documents based on their file format might be useful. Pass out some old documents in various formats, and see which ones they can open properly. Remind them that to them, ten years is half a lifetime, but somewhere down the road, they might need to access a file that they made five or ten years before. Get them receptive to the idea with some practical examples, and then make a pitch for open standards and open source software. Even if they're not interested in Linux, they can hear about what's available for Windows, and the ideas should make sense to them. To be honest, I think the overwhelming majority of non-technical students will not want to get involved with Linux, even with Ubuntu... even some of my fellow computer science majors will only use Linux for coursework and refuse to touch it otherwise, mainly because they don't want to have to worry about "learning new software" or dealing with the fact that, in some cases, there aren't enough drivers to support all their software. Even Ubuntu can be a real pain in terms of out-of-the-box hardware compatibility, especially with laptops (which for most students serve as their main machine of use). I'm sort of sad to admit that many of the kids I go to school with are, in almost all cases, looking for the easiest means to accomplish anything; anything that requires too much effort is bound to be ignored by the majority. I picked up Linux out of genuine interest, and because I knew it served as a very good platform for development (and thus a worthwhile thing to use), and especially because of it's compliance with my (mild) disdain of proprietary software. Also, because I look up to Linus Torvalds, and Richard Stallman, and all those great guys... but, I don't know anyone else at my school who shares my enthusiasm. Perhaps its a bit better at a purely technical school (like WPI)... In short, if students aren't pursuing Linux out of their own interest (or at least out of necessity), I wouldn't try much beyond what you've already attempted in order to get kids more interested... I don't mean to be discouraging or pessimistic, but I really think your efforts are better spent aiding students who've developed an interest in running Linux on their own, as opposed to trying to turn them on to it. FOSS Gaming Survey

System 76: computers with Ubuntu pre-installed

Cory Doctorow recently got a new laptop and he gave a brief review of it in his most recent podcast. When he switched from MacOS to Linux he decided it was no longer worth paying the premium for Apple hardware. I think he said he went to IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads after that, and he's comparing his new laptop to his previous Thinkpad. He said the new laptop was a bit heavier than the Thinkpad, and he had some minor issues with the keyboard layout, but it came with Intrepid Ibex installed, and he was impressed that everything just worked, including his T-Mobile (London) 3G cell modem. Melissa, Are you looking foe something specific or do you just want a hardware overview? Here's a couple commands: "lspci" - will display all the devices on the various pci buses. "lsusb" - displays the usb devices. /proc/cpuinfo will display lots of info about the cpus on the system. /proc/meminfo - memory info. If the system is using lvm you can use the pvscan / vgscan / lvscan to determine you physical / volume group / logical volume config. Is that what you're looking for? Thanks, Tim. I am in the process of installing hardy updates, and it appears that openoffice.org 3.0 is part of what's being installed, so it looks like everything is working perfectly. (2) To Greg: yes, I could ask students to submit all of their assignments in .doc or .rtf format (or even open office format), but they most wouldn't listen. Many can't figure out how to save to any format but .docx. It's a perpetual hassle to nag them. Besides that, I get many files from colleagues, professors at my college and other colleges and universities, as well as the Mass. As OpenOffice 3.0 is a DIFERENT branch from 2.4, the quickest way is to download and install 3.0. It is made to run in parallel and to allow you the chance to migrate anything that the install may have forgotten.All the data that is in your home directory will still be there and during the install you will have the option to use your old settings. There has been talk about getting ppa's signed, but you'll still need to trust the signer. But that is always a problem with Free Software, or anything else for that matter. Hi Andy, I am reluctant to add unofficial repositories, not wanting to "pollute" my "pure" installation. More important question, how do you decide what repositories to trust? I thought I read something about launchpad apps being unsigned too... So, I downloaded the official package. (source tarball? I think?) No integration, grr! Worse, when I bring up my resume the indent & pagination was off. That was a dealbreaker, so oo 2.4 for now on Linux. And I don't see much difference. There's plenty of people running FC (as well as other distros) that are always happy to help. I don't run FC but I help where I can. The irc channel is #wlug-ma om freenode. It goes in waves but there are a few people who are on it all the time. Generally the irc channel is random chats between us all and the mailing list is where things get taken care of. Folks, thank you for past help. Here's another one... I have an HP Laser Jet 1020 black and white printer attached to a PC running Windows XP Professional. It is my home network shared printer. I have no problem using it from other Windows machines. I am having no luck using it from my Linux boxes. (a Fedora and an Aurora). The CUPS package does not have a driver for this printer. I understand that this laser printer is a bit different from other HP laser jets, but I do not understand how this relates to my problem. Without me going into all the details of my guessing game do any of you know exactly what I should do? Ken Jones

I'm also running Hardy on Dell laptop. My laptop is Dell 1525n, that came with Ubuntu Gutsy --but lately running Hardy. I first added the line deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ppa/ubuntu hardy main to my /etc/apt/sources.list --and saved it correctly, then updated the sources list (apt-get update --I think that should have worked!!). But Synaptic did not indicate an update or new version of Openoffice was available. Maybe that was because it was looking at what the already-installed version of Openoffice might need, which was apparently up-to-date. I then followed James' directions exactly (the directions in the tutorial --but using the correct URL that he gave for Hardy), which worked perfectly. Then after letting the Update manager install the recommended updates, I now have Openoffice 3.0 installed here. I did not test Openoffice 3.0 in the laptop except to open it in the word processor mode and look at it a little bit, but it appears to be functional that far, anyway. It seemed to open quickly and smoothly. Good luck with it, Andrew, & thanks guys. I think you're right about it being Synaptic. It's possible that OpenOffice.Org 3.0 isn't in the repository(ies) for Ubuntu 8.04 [1]. Once we find the right repository/address for OpenOffice.Org 3.0, you can either add that repository to Synaptic or use the command line tool apt-get. problem upgrading openoffice.org to version 3.0

Hi Everyone, [GREETINGS:] I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 running Ubuntu 8.04, Hardy Heron. I bought it from Dell, preloaded with Ubuntu, at about the time Dell started selling linux preloaded. I'm knowledgable about computers relative to the general public but probably will be a perpetual "newbie" to this crowd since, for example, I have never learned how to use the comamnd line well. I started using linux seriously when distros like Ubuntu came out that, supposedly, took care of most of the technical details so that a "normal user" could use linux without spending all his free time troubleshooting and reading manuals. Part of what made me "convert" was fantastic folks like LUG members; I love the linux community and am grateful for the help WLUG members have offered at times. [THE PROBLEM:] Unfortunately, I am at my wit's end to upgrade OpenOffice from 2.4.1 to version 3 - which I need to open .docx and .xlsx files that my students at Springfield College constantly send me. I've been wanting to do this for months and haven't had any luck looking in online help files. The openoffice.org help files direct me to options that simply aren't there. For example: "Choose Help- Check For Updates to check manually" - but there is no such option in my help menu ! "To check for updates automatically, Choose Tools- Options - OpenOffice.Org- Online Update" - again, the promised option, "Online Update" , simply isn't there. I tried to uninstall and reinstall OpenOffice.org in "add/remove programs" , but the default package manager (adept?synaptic? it doesn't say which it is, but I think it is synaptic) won't let me uninstall the "base package" as other packages require it. I could try to upgrade the whole distro to Ubuntu 8.10, but am reluctant totake the risk of crashing the computer and feel it shouldn't really be necessary. [HELP?] Can anyone help ? HP T5720 info...

Hey Gang, So last night I'd mentioned as an alternative to a NSLU2 was one of these HP T571X machines that can be found on eBay for around $100. Currently the HP has a very stripped down Debian install on a 32GB SSD. Last night the box was stressed all night and didn't crash (this was after tuning down the DMA) Also I've put up pictures of a "fitPC" that my other coworker is playing with. Both of these machines are going to be used for home automation stuff. In fact the guy who bought the HP is using an Adrino with a home built circuit to read the information off of his pool chemistry controller. I've posted some pictures on my picasa site so people can see how it's all setup, with a standard hard drive for comparison. I know I haven't been ot a meeting in a *long* time, but I do hope to make one this spring if I can. Right now I'm playing with Arduino controller boards on my Ubuntu desktop. Fun blinky LEDs, etc. http://arduino.cc http://www.ladyada.com (where I got my parts) http://www.sparkfun.com http://www.evilmadscientist.com (lots of neat stuff) And loads of others in google. It's pretty neat to play with, and it's interesting moving from the IDE (which has a sucky editor) to a more pure Emacs/Makefile driven setup. I figure maybe I could come and demo this at some point. Any interest? Loosely Linux related, since I'll be using an Ubuntu LiveCD and thumb drive to setup and demo the environment. John

Nope, but it seems like about once a month, someone tries to integrate them. :) If you use MythTV, it's pretty trivial to get those videos into Miro and vice-versa. Looking for Trixbox and A2 Billing project support (Simon)

I have a project consisting of setting up a prepaid phone card operation using Linux server, Trixbox and A2 Billing sofware. I have Trixbox running on a Centos Server right now, but there is more work to be done. I dont know if anyone has experience in this kind of setup or in VOIP area. It varies a lot, but it comes down to just writing code, submitting it, and repeating. You should mention that you're working on it on the mailing list to avoid duplicating work and get help. If your work is good, the maintainers will include it. If it's bad, they'll ask you to fix it. Eventually, if you submit enough good code, you earn trust and can become a maintainer and check code in yourself. If they don't accept your code, you fork the project and put the patched version on your web site. :)

It pretty much boils down to: - pick the project you want to join - sign up for the mailing lists, and probably issue trackers and a wiki - read up on the current state of the project (bonus if it has a "future plans" document somewhere - start asking questions on the mailing lists - pick a piece that looks interesting, and start writing and submitting code Writing documentation is nearly always a good place to start. Many projects have docs that are incomplete, or out of date, and writing docs doesn't require nearly the same level of initial work to get started that writing actual code does. > Are > they all parts of large corporations or schools? Even many of the ones that have a backer now, didn't initially. The Bacula project, one I'm moderately active in, started off as a pet project by a couple of programmers. Now, the primary programmer is actually building a consulting business around it. Another one, the Puppet configuration management system, was written by the author as a tool to help him in his job as a sysadmin consultant. He chose to open source it, in the hopes that it could be useful to others, and that others, finding it useful, would contribute back to it. Both are coming true, and as a result he has a tool that's far more powerful than anything he could have written completely on his own. Umm... by default the Sparcs will use ttya as the console input/output if you don't have a keyboard hooked upto the system. Do you have one hooked up when you boot or is it headless? Here's what I'd do: - power off the system. - hook up the serial cable to port A on the Sparc, and COM1 on your PC. Make sure it's a null-modem cable. - unhook any keyboard on the sun. - fire up hyperterm and set to 9600 baud. - start the sparc. You should see output. Send a BREAK sequence (ESC-F I think) to get to the 'ok' prompt on the Sparc. - you should be all set to type, etc. The real issue, as someone else said, is that you need to modify the /etc/inittab file to have a line like this: cd:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty console 9600 vt100 so that you'll have serial access from both the low level PROM, and from Linux. Basically, you should be able hookup adn use the quad ethernet card, you might just need to load the proper module, or re-compile the kernel to have support for that module. More details will help us to help you. The other solution would be to boot the machine, and then setup a ppp link (or even slip) over a serial port to another computer and then you could scp/ftp the file(s) over to a system with a working ethernet port. Depends on whether you have PPP packages installed or not. And whether you have another linux box available to act as the other end of the link. I know very little about PPP on a windows box and I don't want to go there if I can help it. Pulling the disks and putting them into another SCSI system would also let you get the data off there. I still have not solved how to get my AURORA LINUX package to see the added SBUS quad ethernet card in my SUN SPARC ULTRA --so---> I am after some of the files that I have stored on this SAMBA server. I figured I could use Hyper Terminal. I have an appropriate cross over cable with a 24 pin connector to plug into the SPARC's Terminal A or Terminal B. I can configure Hyper Terminal on my PC running WINDOWS XP. I am stuck figuring out how to get the SUN to activate this asynchronous interface. Any suggestions? Problem Sparc ULTRA 1 not seeing SBus Fast Ethernet

I have a Sparc Ultra 1 which has been running flawlessly since 2003 running Ansel 2.4.20-2.3sparc. Last week after a nine day power outage the system no longer activates eth0, the TPE ethernet interface. I installed a --> Sun 501-5443 x1049A quad 4-port SBus Fast Ethernet card The operating system does not recognize this new hardware. This system has been running so flawlessly for at least four years that I have forgotten much of what I had learned about Aurora.(I am an elderly man by high tech standards). The little green input light corresponding to the port to which I have attached the fast ethernet cable does illuminate. Where do I start? Ken Jones

Driver for SUN SBUS ethernet card.

My SUN ULTRA 1 has lost its eth0 card circuit. I have purchased a Sun 501-5443 X1049A Quad 4-Port SBus Fast Ethernet Card for my SUN ULTRA 1 running Aurora. The original fast ethernet circuitry is part of the SystemCard. I do not wish to replace the system card. Will I have a problem finding a driver? Ken Jones

Have you tried to ping the loopback address? I know that a fried card won't respond to lo replies (127.0.0.1) in Windows, but I'm not sure what the behavior is in *NIX. That being said, if the loopback interface isn't up then we have our answer. I have an Ultra 60 that needs a home. I have Aurora on it, though it's an old version. The system has been in storage for two years, at least. If anyone is interested, there's the system, the monitor, mouse, and keyboard up for grabs. i beleave the ultra1 uses sbus. The U1 is an Sbus based system, runs at either 140 or 170Mhz. In this case, I'd do the following to help diagnose things: 1. Halt to the ok prompt. 2. set the diag level up: ok setenv diag-level max ok setenv diag-switch? true ok 3. Then reset the system or try testing it with ok reset or ok test-all and see what it says. You can also test the network with ok setenv tpe-link-test? true ok test net or you might need to do a full reset to get the link to test. This will help narrow down the problem. I *tihnk* I might have an sbus ethernet card somewhere, but it's hard to say. If anything, it might be time to just upgrade to something newer and more supportable. The SunBlade 100s are pretty darn cheap these days, as are the old Netras and other old Sparc hardware. Good luck! John

Folks, I've not been WLUG active for a year or more. Back then the half of my 111 gig PC disc which was dual booted with FEDORA developed a permanent error. The other half's XP installation has been OKAY. I have learned to us WINDOWS. Meanwhile my SUN ULTRA running as an Aurora SPARC SAMBA file server since 1993 has been chugging along just fine. I live in Fitchburg. We have been without power for nine days. 110 volts came up yesterday evening. Much to my chegrin my SUN was unhappy. I used a rescueCD to boot. A couple things: Make sure the volume is turned up on all mixer devices--either run "alsamixer -c0" from a terminal to bypass the PulseAudio mixer and control the underlying ALSA device, or right-click the volume control icon in the GNOME menu bar and click "Open Volume Control". Also, right-click the volume control icon and go to Preferences to set the which sound card and mixer slider the icon controls. Finally, check the PulseAudio volume control in Applications->Sound and Video->PulseAudio Volume Control. If you have more than one sound card (USB headset, onboard vs. PCI sound card, etc.) make sure PulseAudio is set to use the "right" one by default by right clicking the Output Device and selecting Default. If you leave the PulseAudio volume control open while trying to play sounds and music, you should see each application show up under Playback. You can move the streams between different output devices on-the-fly, control their volumes independently, etc. If you still can't get sound, try temporarily bypassing PulseAudio to see if the underlying ALSA device works: As root: su - mv /etc/alsa/pulse-default.conf /root exit As a normal user, stop the PulseAudio daemon: killall pulseaudio Try a sound application, setting its output device to ALSA instead of PulseAudio. Bear in mind that the PulseAudio daemon may try to respawn if you attempt to use an application that is set to PulseAudio or ESD/ESound output. You may have to "killall pulseaudio" again. After testing, move the file back: su - mv /root/pulse-default.conf /etc/alsa/ exit If you have a SoundBlaster Live! or similar card that uses the emu10k1 ALSA driver, there is a known issue with hiccups etc. when playing music through the new PulseAudio "Glitch-Free" plugin. The bug is actually in the ALSA emu10ki driver but doesn't show up under the older PulseAudio or non-PulseAudio cases since only the new PulseAudio "Glitch-Free" code uses the driver functions/APIs that are buggy. There may be problems with some of the other drivers too, such as Intel HDA (snd_hda_intel). https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=462026 I've had luck downgrading the Fedora 10 pulseaudio plugin to the Fedora 9 one which doesn't use the new "Glitch-Free" stuff: 32-bit: rpm -Uvh --oldpackage http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/9/Fedora/i386/o… 64-bit: rpm -Uvh --oldpackage http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/9/Fedora/x86_64… Finally, I encourage you to try the above steps to make PulseAudio work before going this route, but if you want to give up on PulseAudio altogether, you can disable it by removing this package: yum remove pulseaudio You won't have sound mixing, per-application volume controls, on-the-fly audio stream moving between output devices, etc. but it might work better for you until some of the ALSA kernel driver bugs are fixed. Fedora 10 and sound

I decided to install fedora 10. I understand that my laptop is old (bought in 2002). Fedora 8 had problems installing due to 256M of ram but ran fine once I got it installed. I've since upgraded the memory but fedora 10 can't play audio. Any music file I've tried lags horribly. Is there any configuration I can modify to fix the problem? Alternatively can the audio server be disabled?

Thanks for these resources. It looks like the worcestercoop.org site may not be maintained anymore. I have found some other contact info and will follow up on that. Any other folks you could send my way is greatly appreciated. The Free Geek project looks like my idea on steroids. Too bad they are on the other coast. They are a good resource though. Does anyone have experience with local recyclers? There's a computer co-op in Worcester that's run out of a church basement. I'm CCing some friends who are involved. It's a public lab that also builds computers to give to neighborhood kids. http://www.nindy.com/wcc/ My experience is that Ubuntu is very easy for people who are beginner Windows users to pick up. People who are advanced enough to burn a CD in Windows can usually try it out themselves no problem. A little workstation support may also be needed now and then. The initial projects include: 1. Wrapping up a combined BackupPC/BACULA project - set policies and procedures - document - test restore 2. Establish a source code management system using Subversion with appropriate clients/tools on workstations - help develop policies, practices, and procedures - debug 3. Help design and then build a 3-tier test to production source code flow scheme using three servers (local, called "DEVELOPMENT", remote 1 called "STAGE", and remote 2 called "PRODUCTION". DEVELOPMENT for testing (playground), STAGE for "staging" to production (final test), and PRODUCTION for release. Other than when in a staging mode, PRODUCTION and STAGE can be switched into service as required should one or the other fail. Full details of these requirements will be provided, of course. It looks like you can do it in Icedove (Thunderbird). i've never tried it. Edit --> Folder Properties --> Retention Policy And then you can set it by number of messages or days or for messages that have been read. Automatically deleting old email

Is it possible in Evolution (or another email client) to configure messages to be deleted after a specified period without manual intervention? I have a few folders set for mailing lists and shopping offers, but the contents are irrelevant after a few days. I'd like to be able to set up each folder to delete messages older than seven days, for example. Thanks.

although I love money, I bet we can solve this via email. You can email me the money if you want. You have 1 CentOS server on it with data you want to share to your Windows machines? Samba config help

I wil PAY someone to come to my house and help me configure Samba on my CentOS server. I have three Windows machines set up with an admin user and a non-admin user. I don't really care right now if the non-admin user can access my server, I just want seamless access as admin so I can transfer stuff for my websites without using floppies or CDs. I have lots of money. No, wait, I *don't* have lots of money :) but maybe we can work something out. If I can make my server an ldap server and set up domain stuff, cool. If not, whatever works. presuming your maps will printout on something like 8.5x11 sheets: Make your map in the GIMP; Right-click, do Add layer (yes) Arrange your clippy jackolanterns as needed on this layer (rescale the first one as needed, then keep it copied to the clipboard or in another file). You can add or delete on this layer here without disturbing the map below. When you have the jackolanterns where you want them, Right-click, do Layer> Merge down. Then finalize any other changes to your map, then Save... you should be ready to print then. If there's more to it, give me a call. It sounds like what you want is to move your existing box to the basement and put all your storage and PVR-350 card there, and then build/buy a small, silent box to act as the frontend Myth box. I've seen some nice cases from Antec. You won't need a bunch of power there, nor a blazing fast graphics card. Something with a Mobo with builtin graphics should be just fine. I'd also suggest that you boot off a CompactFlash or USB thumb drive as well, something without any moving parts. Then the system will be even quieter and generate less heat. Put all the disks somewhere else with the noisy system. Of course you need to now have a network between then. I've been meaning to do this myself, but as people say, Tivo Series 2, lifetime subscription has really slowed down my movement. :] John

Not to treat the list as a place to hock my junk, but I've been contemplating getting rid of my unused CoolerMaster ATC-620BX case. I bought it back in 2005 for a planned HTPC box running mythtv, but I never got around to getting the rest of the components. (Plus I have a Series I Tivo with lifetime subscription, so it wasn't terribly urgent.) Upcoming meeting - a potential topic - on Wed Oct 15th 7:00 PM

I loaded this software onto my laptop, but unfortunately, I cannot get dual monitors working, and that means the projector won't work with my laptop in its current state. I've seen a lot of bug reports and complaining about this problem, but nothing that I've tried will make it work. If/when I do get it working, I'll bring my laptop to the meeting, but it is not looking promising. Failing that, as a backup, if anybody has a laptop that is running this software, and has its output VGA port configured for 1024x768@60Hz (and tested prior to the meeting!), and would like to lead a discussion, please let me know. Otherwise, I'm open to other suggestions. Note that whatever the topic, our meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15th, at 7:00 PM. See ya there! Thanks! Eric - one way to stop the attacks is to let them in.... Time for a honeypot! IIRC a very simple C program can keep these guys occupied for hours.. And if your users have good passwords, it's unlikely that a dictionary attack is going to work as well. denyhosts works well, blocks hosts making multiple attempts, etc. It's hard to block attacks where they do one attempt/per IP, but hopefully it's going to take them long enough to run a useful sweep that the won't get in. Fail2ban looks to be another good option as well, though I haven't touched it. John
