I thought i’d respond to this thread to circle back on my solution, which mostly works. The progression of printer connections was the following, the last one is the one that worked. imacs ——> WiFi (dhcp) ——> HP Printer imacs ——> ethernet (dhcp) ——> HP Printer imacs ——> ethernet (static IP) ——> HP Printer imacs ——> ethernet ——> Linux Cups Server ——> ethernet ——> HP Printer imacs ——> ethernet ——> Linux Cups Server ——> USB (over rj45) ——> HP Printer imacs ——> ethernat ——> Linux Cups Server on Raspberry PI ——> USB ——> HP Printer As mentioned by contributors to this thread, the network stack on the HP Printers seem to be flaky, so any attempt that involved the HP Printer’s network stack would fail at some point. Its strange that all of the HP Printers in the office seem to be affected by this. Everything i tired that involved a network link to the HP Printers was very flaky. My second-to-last ditch effort was to try using USB over ethernet; since the printers and the Linux Cups Server are not physically close and i have network drops next to each, i tried the USB over ethernet dongles, which didn’t take. The devies were recognized, but i couldn’t print over the USB device. There were some postings online about setting some serial parameters, but i didn’t want to mess around with it too much. So my final solution was to use an old Raspberry Pi i had kicking around which can be placed next to the printers and connect via USB, and it can also be connected to the office network via ethernet. This has been rock solid and clears my desk of an old r-Pi. In the end i can’t really come to a conclusion other that the HP Printer’s TCP stack is flaky. The rest of the network seems to be fine, i’ve never seen any troubles with anything else on the network. I’d occasional see the printer’s settings claim it is on-line, but have no IP address, which was always suspect to me. the printers operate reliably if using USB. Anyway, just wanted to let y’all know that a raspberry-pi running CUPS was the best solution, and thank you for responding. OBS (https://obsproject.com/) is free, open source software that allows you turn your Linux system into a powerful mobile TV studio. If you’ve watched any online content creators in the past couple of years, you’ve likely seen the software in action. In this talk, I’ll be giving an overview of what the software can do, as well as a case study on how OBS helped rocket a simple clementine to the top of the WPI subreddit. Arcade Machine Problem

My son's cub scout den put together an arcade machine for the Build It pin. It worked great. Then the day of the Blue & Gold where we were demoing it, it didn't work. I ended up using my laptop instead of the intended machine. I have now set it up four times on three computers and have discovered the cause of the problem. The machine is running Fedora. It has only one user and he automatically logs in. It is running wayland. Gnome is configured to automatically start EmulationStation. From there you can launch Ostrich Riders or Super Tux Kart. (I wanted only open source games with two players simultaneous preferably cooperative but more games can be put on.) The problem occurs if the machine does not have a mouse plugged in. EmulationStation starts normally but launching either game brings up the login screen. Next WLUG Meeting March 21st 2019, Topic: TBD

Hey Gang, We've got a WLUG meeting on the 14th of March Location: WPI Student Center Mid Century Room (rm 331) Time: 7pm I've got a couple ideas for topics. 1. Snaps / flatpacks / appimage. These are entirely encapsulated applications that'll run on a variety of linux distributions. My new laptop runs snaps using snapd. This is just one of a bunch of new technologies for distributing software without having it tied to the machines glibc and underlying libraries. 2. Microsoft and its complicated relationship with the OSS community. Are we moving towards a dystopian future of locked and signed bootloaders? Where your only option is to run Windows 10 with the linux subsystem. Has google essentially done the same thing with Chromebook's and ChromeOS and Android? If someone has a topic that they're dying to do, let me know. As usual refreshments and snacks will be provided and afterwards we'll head off for dinner to continue the conversation. (text-based mp3 player) Anyone use mpg321/mpg123 ?

Not trying to prove I'm the biggest dinosaur in the zoo, but I do like TEXT windows ("Terminal",etc) and to play my saved/local mp3 files, mpg123 floats my boat ....especially to random-play-everything-from-a-file-list", or just " cd ArtistDeJour ; mpg123 * */* " or such. mpg321 is not in base Mint (nor other release's base generally) pkg list, but Mint base+3rdparty DID grab everything else it / mpg321 needed. ( pardon confusion, 321 vs 123 = all the same, if you apt-get or otherwise get "mpg321" you get the "mpg123" command.) I had it working on CentOS, with full features usable mid-stream, ( "h" would display a menu of commands like " 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0" would jump to 10,20,.....90% portions of the track) and so on. but I dumped CentOS on my fileserver-with-sound, replaced with Mint 19.1 (which BTW solved a firefox-hangs-my-box issue) and I lost the interactive features. e.g. "h" does nothing at the moment, and when I run mpg123 I don't see the "type h for help" output I used to get. So it's just not enabled! Anyone else use this? -doug p.s. whatever Remote Control option is, that's not what the trick needed, though I don't understand it. (I stared at the args/Options below until believing I didnt need any of these flags to use the cmds listed ) But what i CAN'T show at the moment is what the interactive cmds (which "h" will list, normally) are (were until I upgraded). Yes but I refuse to go backward unless I have to. xrandr is read only under Wayland. I found a simpler solution to my problem. The TV has an audio input next to the VGA input that I didn't notice. Of course I'll have to buy a VGA cable since I don't think my son will appreciate losing his monitor cable for the project. Still need to get a software interface running which doesn't need a mouse and keyboard hooked up. EmulationStation has been suggested. I plan on using open source games not emulators but it has "ports" which allows running native applications. Just have to build it under Fedora to test. It includes both. Gnome just ships with Wayland enabled by default, but you can change that. DVI Initial Resolution

I've had the cub scouts build an arcade machine. The TV being used for display is connected by DVI. Fedora defaults to a resolution the TV does not support. If I hookup a monitor on the VGA port I can set the resolution of the second monitor but it switches back to an unsupported resolution when the second monitor is disconnected. This is a system that automates the running of ansible playbooks on hosts. What's ansible? Ansible is a management and configuration system for installing / modifying and maintaining linux/unix machines. What's cooler is that AWX can natively use git to manage configs. I'll talk about ansible, playbooks and then AWX. As usual, snacks and refreshments will be provided and we'll head off for dinner afterwards to continue to conversation. I am not sure if this is off topic, but there were quite a few pay email services a while ago. I use https:/www.fastmail.com for the freedoom to switch ISPs without affecting email. They do support Thunderbird if you use an application specific password. Depending on your bandwith/storage usage, this might be an acceptable solution. For at least a dozen years I have had my own website on GoDaddy. I also use my GoDaddy email as my main email route. (Although Thunderbird is getting ungodly slow of late as an email client.) I never want to be dependent on "free" email services like gmail. I am willing to pay a service like GoDaddy, so that places like Google and Facebook can't dictate what I can do just because they provide their services for "free". Charter did not start out to be a computer service provider. That's probably why I don't want to depend on Charter for computer services more than I have to. charter.net is blocking all Digital Ocean droplet email

I need to vent here. Charter.net which provides my internet, sucks. They are now refusing to accept email from *any* IP blocks owned by Digital Ocean, even though I've got a good mail setup on a droplet there, with proper DNS entries, SPF, etc. So I'm looking to spin up a new instance on some other provider, or I'm going to try and route the email via my @charter.net account that I have since I'm a customer. And I have opened a ticket with them. No answer. Jerks. What do people think of Vultr.com? Seems pretty comparable... I just wonder when Charter will block their IP blocks... Jerks. I think it's too expensive to buy an IPv4 address for more permanent use, since it's too easy for that block of 256 to be blanket banned by some jerks. Grr!!!!! John

My solution to this was to setup an openvpn tunnel on my VPS that would allow me to access my LAN via a NAS that I keep online in my apartment. (In other words, my laptop would connect to my VPS, which would route to my apartment via my NAS, and thus expose the LAN). The big problem is that the network uses 192.168.1.0/24, and given that I cannot edit any router settings, I cannot change this. If I were to simply expose this subnet via openvpn, I wouldn't be able to access any other 192.168.1.0/24 address if I were connect to the VPN. My plan was to try and use some iptables magic to map 10.24.0.0/24 to 192.168.1.0. Luckily, this works, thanks to the NETMAP extension (iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -d 10.24.0.0/24 -j NETMAP --to 192.168.1.0/24, for the curious). However, the only way I can make this work is if I add the NAS as a gateway on all of the machines I want to connect to on my LAN, which is a bit sad (ip route add 192.168.255.0/24 via 192.168.1.69) . Is there some way I can make this a bit more seamless? This isn't my least favorite solution, as I don't need to run the openvpn client on every host, but it isn't much better...

My plan was to try and use some iptables magic to map 10.24.0.0/24 to 192.168.1.0. Luckily, this works, thanks to the NETMAP extension (iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -d 10.24.0.0/24 -j NETMAP --to 192.168.1.0/24, for the curious). However, the only way I can make this work is if I add the NAS as a gateway on all of the machines I want to connect to on my LAN, which is a bit sad (ip route add 192.168.255.0/24 via 192.168.1.69) . I think you could do something with SSH reverse tunneling, given you have a VPS. On the NAS: ssh -R <desired_port>:localhost:22 user@<vps_address> Then, once you've ssh'd into the VPS from anywhere else: ssh localhost -p <desired_port> Now you're ssh'd into the NAS. The desired port could be anything but it needs to be the same on both ends. Unless the UPS is very beefy, I wold not do this with laser printers. When My laser printer is on the battery side of my UPS, it resets the UPS when I start a print. I think it has something to due with a current inrush for a heater that has to run before printing. Of course newer printers may be better about this. One thing that occurred to me: I had a problem like this rather frequently in the last apartment. It had electricity issues: the ancient refrig was on same circuit as half of the apartment --including the elex outlets I had to use for the computers & printer, etc. The lights used to dim slightly whenever the refrig compressor came on. I used to hear the printer resetting itself several times/week. The printer and CUPS often disagreed -- quit working together. This is a decent HP Deskjet, on the compatible list. But printers seem to be sensitive beasts. Restart CUPS usually fixed the problem, altho occasionally I would have to completely disconnect the printer, power, data cable & all, then wait a few min before hooking it all back up, then restart CUPS. Now here at the new place since last May, there are no fluctuating elex issues, and no CUPS - printer issues either. May I suggest, if you don't have already: plug all the printers into a decent UPS (rather than zip strip or whatever), which should keep the elex supply steady for your printers. I have a spare UPS here that I am not using. I bought it several years ago for just this reason, but it works only with grounded outlets which we did not have at the old place (they were "fake" grounded). I would gladly contribute this UPS if you would like to see if it helps. I am in Worcester. Inevitably the only printer that works most of the time is the ink-jet which is a lot more expensive to re-fill. I’m looking for a reliable solution. If anyone has a recomendation that’d be great! struggling w/ reliable printers on CUPS in small office

WLug-gers, tl;dr: Can someone recommend a printer (or printer brand) that is reliable for printing via CUPS? I’m struggling w/ printers in a small office and i've struggled to get any kind of guidance on-line. The volume of pages printed at the office is probably around 100 pages a day and there are 4 printers — all HPs and all consumer grade — each printer has its purpose, e.g. there's an 11x17 printer, one color laser, one BW laster, one color inkjet. The office is all iMACs, which connect to a Linux CUPS server. The iMacs were networking directly w/ the printers, but i added the CUPS server to try to mitigate the poor reliability with only marginal results. Routinely printers become “paused” in CUPS so i need to go in and ‘unpause’ them, also some printers just fall of the network entirely. Inevitably the only printer that works most of the time is the ink-jet which is a lot more expensive to re-fill. I’m looking for a reliable solution. If anyone has a recomendation that’d be great! There is a setting for getting your own messages or not.

It said "Windows 10 or better" on the sticker, so I went better... As an aside, as soon as I installed Ubuntu it immediately downloaded and flashed the BIOS, so I'm suspecting there's something in the middle there. I have seen firewalls, when downloading a large file, reduce in performance until the connection appears to freeze. The comment about the router being old has SOME validity. Would a firmware update of the router be in order? I have come to expect a new windows box to be busy for a while doing updates when it is first turned on (*ugh*). So my trusty old piece of crap finally, well crapped out. My company gave me a shiny new Lenovo 470 but it came with windows 10... no worries I'll just quick grab the 18.10 ubuntu iso and use one of the various tools to create a bootable USB... The *moment* I plugged it into my ethernet network, all hell broke loose. I didn't want to hook it up to my wifi because I assume it'll just send my wifi info back to a mothership somewhere. My Verizion AP / router promptly crashed, hard. I had to yank the power sing the ABC song for it to fully discharge and reboot. I am considering getting a desktop document reader/scanner for my linux desktop. I am hoping to do all of the following with the camera. 1) scan documents or book pages for OCR. From what I can determine 8MP is desirable for this. 2) view close ups large enough to inspect the solder (or at least the presence of) on fine pitch devices. (Electronics) 3) Use it as a web cam. I suspect my desktop is powerful enough to read the camera at the 30FPS, does webcam software in linux reduce the image enough quality for skype to work with a SLOW broadband connection? I am asking for opinions/suggestions. I noticed that the fan speed was zero. I had the same result on mt Mint machine. To fix this I had to run sensors-detect (part of lm sensors?) to update /etc/modules with the correct driver(s) and reboot. Hopefully, GKrellM or ones preferred hardware monitoring GUI will work with fan speed now. Just adding my 2 cents worth. That is pretty nifty, thanks. It's such a PITA trying to pull all that info when I want to inventory systems, this does a lot! I can also imagine it would be a pretty useful tool for nefarious types fishing around for hardware to steal. Dec. WLUG meeting reminder! Topic: DMARC, SPF and DKIM

Hey Everybody! We've got a meeting tomorrow! Date & Time: December 13th 2018 @ 7PM Location: WPI Student Center Mid Century Room (rm 331) Presenter: Frank Sweetser Topic: DMARC, SPF and DKIM. This topic came up on the list as a possible reason why some people weren't seeing all the mail on the list and I thought it might be an interesting topic. The good old days of the internet are sadly dead. Now that the Nigerian princes have given up trying to distribute their money, we're instead left with more sophisticated attacks. DMARC, SPF and DKIM are a few of the techniques now being employed to help cut down on spoofed email. As usual refreshments and snacks will be provided and afterwards we'll head off from dinner and keep the conversation going. new/old toy soon? (yet another Gigabyte GA-NNN looming)

Thanks for the support and keeping the list alive. Perhaps too alive (I can rant/ramble!) Are Gigabyte motherboards OK? I've only had one so far. Now dying perhaps. Looking ahead..... since I upgrade "combo style" (all ram and cpu attached/included) I'm gonna look at (days from now) a used motherboard+cpu+ram+beast video+beast fan, hope it fits under my hood, dude speaks well about his retired GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3 SKT.AM3 AMD870+SB850 4XDDR3-1866, IEEE1394 USB3, SATA3, RAID, ATX plus cpu,ram, and even fan info on this BEAST of a fan, should i be scared? https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-U9B-SE2-CPU-Cooler/dp/B002VT1GZ6 doug> I find it cool that a machine/mb that old, is still way more than I need. mailing list issues

Some people (including myself) have not been receiving emails sent to the list. I'm guessing that DMARC may be blocking messages from senders' domains that have DMARC set up, so I made a MailMan change to enable DMARC Mitigations. This works by replacing your "From: you(a)wherever.com" with "From: Your Full Name via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org>". Your original From: appears in the Reply-To: header. I'm also sending this message to test delivery to a few domains like yahoo.com and gmail.com.

I taped THAT magic (fsck...) onto a paper mini-sign on the PC for another rainy day. TODAY, the crash was followed by not booting (random results, kernel panics or bios/grub waiting). So I brought the SSD to my other living room desktop (not booting FROM it...) checked SSD with sudo smartcl -a /dev/sda #### AND ITS FINE. I moved the SSD "back" to wife's PC on another SATA port. It's fine! (motherboard deteriorating i guess....but might last another decade). I did run into.... ("created" by moving the disk i assume) .... a boot/warning error NEW TO ME: On initial boot a WARNING ERROR on the early/black screen (similar to where initramfs> shows up..just before that i think) "warning: environment block too small" was actually ignorable (after a few secs, boot marched on to kernel/logo). But I found "it's a thing" and the error appears solvable with first google hit suggesting linux user# sudo rm /boot/grub/grubenv # or "mv" it somewhere.old; 1024 byte file. ...............# sudo grub-editenv /boot/grub/grubenv create and reboot. Seems good now except (new i think; probably from the sata port move?) there's a ONE MINUTE wait on the initial boot with the Mint logo flashing. Final things-to-inspect: (no need to "fix" /etc/fstab which of course does find the disk parts ( just / and swap) by UUID and /var/log/syslog ( I have exportedthe old history to study, i think the disk errors stopped. ) =========================WRAPUP Haven't solved this learn-all mission yet, but...hope to make it to WLUG THURS EVE and i just thought of a (this) topic. Trick is knowing where to start such a story/tutorial; I'd try to skip over BIOS and sata/disk/etc basics, the fuzzy parts for me involve "initramfs" ... grub ..... and maybe that's it for me. OpenGameArt Movie Video Game

Normally I do National Novel Writing Month in November. This year I decided to try the Indie Game Making Contest 2018. I spent the month working in my free time on a new computer game. I had thought of this game a while ago (including doing a novelization of it for NaNoWriMo last year). The idea was to use lots of art from OpenGameArt.org. Since the styles of the artwork can be drastically different, that was integrated into the story. The villain is in the Liberated Pixel Cup style. (It was a contest opengameart.org did to create lot of artwork which could be used together.) He would be trying to wipe out all the other art styles. (It's a crazy mashup like the Lego Movie.) The game didn't get to the level of completion I had hoped. I'd like to throw my hat in the ring and give an overview+demo of GNURadio, a FOSS package for graphically developing DSP applications and interfacing with Software-Defined Radios (SDR). I spent last summer at MITRE using this software heavily, and I'm also using it for my MQP work. For the demo, I'd like to bring down some hardware from my lab ( https://www.ettus.com/product/details/UN210-KIT) as well as the $20 RTL-SDR dongle ( http://www.nooelec.com/store/sdr/sdr-receivers/nesdr-mini-rtl2832-r820t.html) to show reception of broadcast FM, ADS-B telemetry from airplanes, as well as some real time views of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and streaming drone footage from a DJI Phantom 3 Pro. Here's the outline: What's SDR? Why should we care? Why do I care? Who uses GNURadio? GNURadio fundamentals Introducing the workflow/flowgraph interface Cloning/Building/Installing (this won't be specific, just mentioning the GitHub repo and where the quickstart guide is) How to contribute (also GR-hackfest!) I guess the question I have is this. IBM just spend 34B on redhat. Okay, now what. Is it possible that RedHat's support stuff was generating so much revenue that IBM thinks it can simply sit back and let it print money? While that's possible, I don't think RedHat has made 34B in it's entire existence. Thusly, there will be a point where the people who push the heaps of money around at IBM go "You know, we spent 34B on this thing, how are we going to get some ROI out of this?" My interactions with AIX and it's adoption of RPM as a method of software installation makes me think that possibly IBM sees a transition plan where AIX gets supplanted with Linux over time. Again, this is just conjecture. My fears are that those who care about FOSS in IBM and RedHat will be pushed aside by those in IBM who'll want a short term return on investment that makes the shareholders happy. Tim. I think that this is a big enough deal that IBM knows it is "bet the farm". IBM of today is far different than the IBM that started investing in Linux. They have sacrificed the long term for short term profits. The question in my mind is does IBM realize this? Eagle to KiCad conversion?

Guys, This is a total shot in the dark, but I'm wondering if anyone here has taken an Eagle project design, stripped out pretty much everything but the holes and outline of a board, and them imported it all into KiCad 5? I'm trying to build a cape for an AdaFruit Gemma M0 board (which I'll be happy to talk about at some point down the line at a meeting) where it auto-matically turns my sound bar on/off and the TV is turned on/off. Not more having to hunt for the sound bar remote! I've been vaguely beating my head against the wall here, esp since it's my first ever board design. Lots to learn! John

Pocket Arcade and Tiny Arcade

I received a Tiny Arcade from Tiny Circuits. It is an interesting toy. I've had a lot of fun playing with it. They recently released the Pocket Arcade. I purchased two. This is even better than the Tiny Arcade. I've been working on a new game for the system. It is a pokemon like game where you paint your monsters. It's still early in development. This would allow us to drive four displays @ 1080p off one Mini DisplayPort, allowing us to drive 24 monitors off one card, across 8 cards, totaling 192 monitors. With this all in mind, and the knowledge that we may have to write some funky Xorg configs, we pulled the trigger on all of it, and would attempt to drive as many monitors as we had on hand in the office. We decided to load Fedora on this machine, which should be able to drive MST with the included amdgpu driver, thanks to patches that were added to kernel 4.15, and some DC display code settings that were enabled in kernel 4.17. With all of this, we were able to successfully drive ... two displays off each MST hub, instead of the expected four. Not as fruitful as we may have hoped, but hey, 96 monitors would still be awesome. Out of sheer curiosity, we threw Windows on another SSD, and discovered that Windows could drive four displays off each MST hub, but we were getting hard limited to six monitors per card, no matter what we tried. We hypothesized that this might be due to theproprietary AMD driver setting an arbitrary limit, and thought we might be able to still pull off the 12 monitors per card in Linux. A couple of small scripts later, we were up and running with six monitors on one card. Upon adding the seventh and re-running our script, we were greeted with the following. I don't quite know enough about how video cards work to make an informed decision about what's going on, but my hypothesis is that the card's firmware is what transmits how many outputs we can use, so we may be SOL in the department of getting more CRTCs, but perhaps there may be some way to trick Xorg into rendering the content of one CRTC across multiple monitors? Not sure. Would love to hear what you all think. Reconnecting with my media drive

When I was running Debian, I had most of my media segregated on a Seagate SSHD. That's still in the system now that I'm running Mint. I'm trying to get Plex up and running again. The file manager shows the media drive mounted, but shows nothing on it. I don't see it listed in fstab. I don't remember how it was formatted, but I think it's an ext4 drive. We put together a build using 8x Radeon 7870s with 6x Mini DisplayPort outputs<https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AJ3BU1115&cm_re=Visio…> (the price spiked after we bought these for some reason) with 2x Intel Xeon E5-2630 V4 <https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117630> , all tied together in a SuperMicro 4028GR-TR2<https://www.supermicro.com/products/system/4u/4028/SYS-4028GR-TR2.cfm>. Limiting the cards to PCIE 8x, we should be able to drive all 8 with 16 PCIE lanes to spare. Because the Mini DisplayPorts follow the DisplayPort 2.1 spec, we were hoping to use MST with 48 of these MST hubs from Monoprice<https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=2…> (which we actually got on sale!). This would allow us to drive four displays @ 1080p off one Mini DisplayPort, allowing us to drive 24 monitors off one card, across 8 cards, totaling 192 monitors. With this all in mind, and the knowledge that we may have to write some funky Xorg configs, we pulled the trigger on all of it, and would attempt to drive as many monitors as we had on hand in the office. We decided to load Fedora on this machine, which should be able to drive MST with the included amdgpu driver, thanks to patches that were added to kernel 4.15, and some DC display code settings that were enabled in kernel 4.17. With all of this, we were able to successfully drive ... two displays off each MST hub, instead of the expected four. Not as fruitful as we may have hoped, but hey, 96 monitors would still be awesome. Out of sheer curiosity, we threw Windows on another SSD, and discovered that Windows could drive four displays off each MST hub, but we were getting hard limited to six monitors per card, no matter what we tried. We hypothesized that this might be due to the proprietary AMD driver setting an arbitrary limit, and thought we might be able to still pull off the 12 monitors per card in Linux. A couple of small scripts later, we were up and running with six monitors on one card. Upon adding the seventh and re-running our script, we were greeted with the following. This is where I reach out to you all. Does anyone know of some Xorg or kernel flag trickery we can use to get more outputs for our buck with the limited number of CRTCs? I don't quite know enough about how video cards work to make an informed decision about what's going on, but my hypothesis is that the card's firmware is what transmits how many outputs we can use, so we may be SOL in the department of getting more CRTCs, but perhaps there may be some way to trick Xorg into rendering the content of one CRTC across multiple monitors? I ended up just installing Mint with xfce on the SSD. I didn't stay up to play with it. I'm not sure VMs are a good solution on my hardware. I can't enable Hyper-V in Windows because the processors don't support SLAT. I'll give it a shot with VirtualBox, though. If you're using Intel or AMD graphics, then I highly recommend trying out Fedora. It gets the newest kernel and Mesa versions during a release's life cycle, and it typically stays close to upstream. Fedora (Workstation) also isn't rolling release, so you can expect your system to not have any breaking changes from an update which is an important quality in a server. As far as I know, Manjaro having a rolling release model doesn't make this stability guarantee. Since it’s a desktop, I’d go with linuxmint, based on Ubuntu based on Debian. I use it for my desktop and it’s nice. Plus you have the power of Debian to run services in the background. The only gotcha is that you want to disable people shutting down or rebooting the system from the GUI. It can be done, just not sure off the top of my head. I’d actually suggest you find and old system you can stick in the closet to run as your plez server if possible. I'm having trouble deciding which distro to install on my new SSD. It's the only desktop computer in the house, so it's used for web, email, etc, plus it's a Plex server. DistroWatch.com shows Manjaro being really popular right now, but I've never heard of it. It's based on Arch, which I've heard of, but never tried. I see that Arch uses Pacman for a package manager. I'm used to APT; I'm not sure if I'd like Pacman. So anyway, I thought I'd ask for suggestions. -- Rich

Snaps tend to install more cleanly due to including all of the dependencies independently of the host OS. Snaps have a few drawbacks though, one being that they're very Ubuntu-centric. To my knowledge, the apparmor profiles which are using for sandboxing are currently not upstreamed, so app developers like the powershell devs recommend installing in "classic mode" which bypasses this benefit. Snaps are also added to your $PATH, which can be a problem if a snap decides to use the same name as an application that was installed via package manager for example. Also from what I remember, snaps are still heavily reliant on the Ubuntu app store. While it is possible to install an arbitrary .snap file, you can't add different repos. Flatpak doesn't seem to have these limitations, being much more distro-agnostic and having a well-defined sandboxing mechanism. Snaps (https://snapcraft.io/) are an application-packaging technology created by Canonical designed to be developer-friendly by including dependencies instead of breaking them up into smaller packages like deb and rpm formats do. Personally I don't think think Snappy is very well designed, but as long as they lower the barrier of entry for application distribution on desktop Linux then it's a net positive. When the Xwindows locks up, I sometimes am able to get it back with: ALT-CTRL-F1 to switch to a text console. At least it might be logging errors to the test console at that point as well. And after using the computer for another hour or two yesterday, it locked up; the pointer still tracked the mouse, but I couldn't click on anything or get any response from the keyboard. I got a new SSD last week that's waiting to be installed, so I'll probably punt and do a fresh OS install when I do that. Here is my diary entry for the solution I found when I had problems like this. 01 Sep 2017 Today's Contents Linux <#01Sep2017Linux> Back to Table Of Contents <#TableOfContents> Linux .xsession-errors is still causing problems. Xserver - X Window System display server <https://www.x.org/archive/X11R6.8.0/doc/Xserver.1.html>. Perhaps the audit level has been mis-set. Should be level 1. Can't figure out if it is set, or where it is set. Interesting file to look at is/var/log/Xorg.0.log. Using config file /etc/Xaa/xorg.conf. Maybe I should be looking at kde. Huge .xsession-errors <https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1517991>. Here is one suggestion. Had the same problem with 11GB .xsession-errors. Fixed it with a solution I found to disable the recent history too. rm .xsession-errors touch .xsession-errors sudo chattr -i .xsession-errors Simply delete the file. Create an empty file. Set the immutable attribute. Which makes the file protected against writing and deleting. Nothing can be logged. Note that until you logout the file space deleted is not unallocated because the file is being held open. I did it. Full Home folder

I found today that my Home folder is full. The culprit seems to have been a roughly 1/2 terabyte .xsession-errors file. I deleted it, but 'emptying the trash' didn't seem to be clearing any space. I found that everything I'd thought I'd deleted recently seemed to still be sitting in $uname/.local/share/Trash. I selected everything in that folder and typed shift+delete. Now nothing shows in the Trash folder, but my Home folder is still full. I rebooted, and that's still the case. What now? Tonight's meeting

I've never been to a WLUG meeting before. It's okay for a member of the general public to just show up, right? On a different note, I was trying to set up the Cyrus mail server under Suse 9.2 and have been having a hell of a time with it. I set it aside about 2 weeks ago and haven't gotten back to it. If I bring the PC with me, would anyone be able and willing to help me configure Cyrus properly (or maybe the problem's with PAM - I don't know)? IMPORTANT: Upcoming WLUG Mailing List Move

After 18+ years of the WLUG mailing list being graciously hosted on the WPI campus network at no cost to WLUG, we must move to an external mailing list host as WPI prepares to shut down its Linux email infrastructure after moving to Microsoft Office 365 in the cloud. Phase 1 begins Monday, July 23, 2018, but the shutdown for third-party domains like wlug.org is planned for mid- to late-August. Luckily, we have a new sponsor who has generously offered to host our mailing list at no cost on Mailman 3 with Hyperkitty! We are currently setting up the new mailing list and working out the details, but I wanted to send out a "heads up" message to everyone before anything changes. The plan is to set up the new host in parallel with the existing host, but this necessitates a change in the mailing list address. I also plan to copy the existing subscriber list (and archives if possible) over to the new list, but if that isn't possible I'll let everyone know. More details will be coming soon. TinyArcade and Arduboy

I've been playing around with the Tiny Arcade by Tiny Circuits. It's been a lot of fun programming. The initial development of Color Monster is documented here: http://identicalsoftware.com/games/colormonster The new Pocket Arcade has me really interested but it isn't available yet. I stumbled across the Arduboy. (Stumbled again? I'm pretty sure I saw the kickstarter and decided against it.) Does anyone have one? What do they think of it? I think it isn't quite what I want for a system. Seems like it can be annoying to upload a new game onto the system. While I had fun with the TinyScreen Video Game Kit, I like the microsd card of the Tiny Arcade so you can have multiple games available.

UPS power backup unit needs home

I have a UPS power backup unit here that I can't use. This is a Cyber Power model 1000PFCLCD. This should supply around 15 minutes of power to your computer & peripherals in the event of a power outage. Enough time to shutdown your delicate operations properly, save the doc you were just working on, or put your game on pause... Purchased several years ago (for around $109), I never used it in the old place because NONE of the circuits were grounded --so it wouldn't ever do anything. Now in the new place, nothing is grounded here either! Probably it works but I was never able to test it, since it requires a grounded circuit even to charge itself. It has not been abused except by a little dust. This is about the size of eight bricks all stacked together into a box shape... Probably heavier than eight bricks. Unscented; smoke- & cat-free. Will go with your other shiny black computer decor. Someone needs this! I want you to want this! Offering it here first, FREE to good home. I am still in Worcester, now on the quieter end of Vernon St. Pickup time flexible, and we have an off-street spot where you can temporarily park. Who wants this? Let me know. Liz J

Reminder! Meeting July 12th 2017 Topic: Open Forum / BBQ / guix

Hey Gang, Our next meeting is July 12th, 2018. Currently there isn't a topic, so I think I'm going to call this an open forum meeting. There was some talk about guix, so we'll definitely be talking about that. We'll also talk about when we want the BBQ. Personally, my vote is for Sept. Less bugs, cooler weather, etc. Obviously if someone with a pool wants to pitch for August I can be persuaded! Location: WPI Campus Center Rm 301 (Hagglund room) When you come up the stairs go right instead of left. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Hey Gang, Our next meeting is July 12th, 2018. Currently there isn't a topic, so I think I'm going to call this an open forum meeting. We'll definitely want to talk about when we want the BBQ. Personally, my vote is for Sept. Less bugs, cooler weather, etc. Obviously if someone with a pool wants to pitch for August I can be persuaded! Free to a good home: HP PSC 1315xi All in one printer

Have you been waiting to get yourself one of those awesome web connected printers, but didn't want to shell out the big bucks? Well... you're out of luck, this is NOT one of those printers. If however, you'd like a reliable inkjet printer that works well with linux, let me know. The scanner / copier / printing functions all work. Better yet, it has new ink cartridges in it as well! Mind you, it is an elderly printer, but I've had zero issues with it. The only con is that HP branded ink cartridges are getting expensive, but the knockoffs work just fine as well. I've got my mail hosted on a Digital Ocean droplet and I'm very happy. For approx $72 a year I get a full Linux system with 1gb of RAM and 20gb of SSD storage. Plenty for a mail/web hosting setup for a small family site.
