Linksys Router

by Gary Hanley

I recently upgraded my router to a WRT45GS and have been having a bear of a time trying to figure out why, when I boot Linux, I can't get an IP address from the router but with Windows I can. It worked with the old router. It works with Windows. There are no DHCP tweaks in the router. What the hell is wrong? Turns out that there a bug in the router. It doesn't like Linux-based DHCP requests. This is a known issue and apparently Linksys has no intention of fixing it. But they did release a Linux-compatible version of the router instead. So my options are to either by the Linux-compatible version or find another brand that supports Linux (or better, doesn't exclude Linux) and is as good wireless performance-wise as the Linksys routers. Any recommendations? I know there is an open source firmware product that can be applied, but I'm not ready to try that yet as I work from home a lot and I'm in the middle of an important project so I need a stable VPN connection right now. -- Gary

Fuse and other users

by Jamie Guinan

The other night I was trying to find the code where FUSE [dis]allowed other users to access files, but I couldn't remember where it was. Found it in fs/fuse/dir.c, /* ... * For this reason only those processes can call into the filesystem, * for which the owner of the mount has ptrace privilege. This * excludes processes started by other users, suid or sgid processes. */ static int fuse_allow_task(struct fuse_conn *fc, struct task_struct *task) { if (fc->flags & FUSE_ALLOW_OTHER) return 1; if (task->euid == fc->user_id && task->suid == fc->user_id && task->uid == fc->user_id && task->egid == fc->group_id && task->sgid == fc->group_id && task->gid == fc->group_id) return 1; return 0; } The FUSE_ALLOW_OTHER flag is set when you invoke a fuse program like sshfs with "-o allow_other". -Jamie

Fuse "slides", other notes

by Jamie Guinan

FUSE presentation, http://www.bluebutton.com/wlug/fuse-presentation/index.html Thanks for putting up with the delays due to my ill-preparedness in forgetting my port-replicator, and big thanks (again) to Frank S. for hooking me up with the Mac laptop. Before we settled on using the Mac, I was going to try this, http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/ but it was slow to install and I didn't want to delay the presentation any further. It lets you export your whole X display over VNC. I just tried it on a system here, and it does work - in fact, if you run the viewer on the same host, you get an "infinite hall of mirrors effect", like pointing a webcam at your monitor, http://www.bluebutton.com/wlug/x11vnc-hom.png A useful tool for remote access, AND for Cthulhu to inflict non-euclidean madness on X11 users! :) Happy holidays all! -Jamie

Balloon board

by Andre Lehovich

After the meeting a few of us chatted about embeded hardware projects. The Balloon Board, based on the Strongarm CPU, has all open specs. Unfortunately it looks like a sample board is about $700. http://balloonboard.org/ An example product built using the board: http://www.toby-churchill.com/english/product_info/index.html --Andre ____________________________________________________________________________________ Need a quick answer? Someone else mentioned checking the X server logs. I think that is a good place to start. -Jeff p.s. Nuked the BLU CC since I can't post there.
