samba thanks & xmms Q

First, thanks to those who sent suggestions on how to solve my samba configuration problems. My Win98 box is happily using file and print shares from my linux box. (Too bad SANE does not have drivers for the scanner cartridge on my Canon printer. <sigh>) A new question. I tried getting the equalizer on xmms to control the output while playing audio CD's (not MP3's). The volume control on the main window works, and the playlist window works, but the equalizer doesn't. What's the trick? TIA, Bill

Also, I'm going to put together my obligatory Disk-o-everything. As a side note, I personally think it would be cool if we could have a repository of WLUG goodies, but I know there'd be some logistics around that. So far this is what's going to be on it. As a former Tech Support Slave, tinkering with the registry of any Microsoft product is akin to hand editing your compressed kernel image... I'm not saying you can't do it, I just wouldn't.. Plus, any encryption (even microsoft) encryption is better than no encryption any day... Add this line in the global section of your smb.conf file and the world will be a happier place. encrypt passwords = yes Oh, and this works with every version of windows... So, by this u got to make the sama workgroup among your server and your client ( Windows 98 ) Please make sure that the user who wants to use the samba server are listed in your server. After finishing the ethernet card, there must be a logon box to be diplayed before you use your windows 98. Here, at the folder defined bellow, create EnablePlainTextPassword and fill 1 as the value. Details : Regedit My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP\En ablePlainTextPassword (DWORD value =1) Restart your windows, then in logon box, enter your Linux|Unix users with its password. By default, Windows uses encrypted passwords for SMB, and at this point the default Samba configurations for most Linux installations set up encrypted passwords on the Samba server. There's no need for this anymore, and plaintext passwords are not a good idea to begin with (even if it's not encrypted that well). Brian J.
