WLUG Meeting June 13th 2019! Topic: Side Channel Attacks

Hey Everybody, We've got a meeting on Thursday June 13th at 7PM! Location: WPI Campus Center Mid-Century room (rm 331) aka, the usual haunt. After last meeting we ended up having a side conversation regarding the now multiple side channel attacks that the Intel microarchitecture is vulnerable to. I thought it might be a good time to actually deep dive what these are, why they keep happening, why they're likely to continue and what efforts are being put in to try to mitigate them and the effects these migrations have on performance. As usual snacks and refreshments will be supplied and afterwards we'll head off for dinner to continue the conversation. First I've ever heard of it and I'm a big big xterm user. :-) I like minimal terminals that don't waste screen real estate. It's been my experience that dual, tri and even quad monitor setups just "work" these days. Though I did hit a funny one the other day, I had a co-worker who discovered that the the maximum number of xterms he could have running was ~240. I pointed out that gterm/mterm or any of the other tabable terminals don't suffer this limitation but he's old school and wants to use xterm... It should be noted he also actively uses more than 36 desktop pages as well where these windows were strewn across. Setting up new monitor

I picked up a free monitor today, a Samsung S24C230L. The native resolution is 1920x1080, and it's connected via DVI. The existing monitor has a native resolution of 1680x1050 and is plugged into the analog VGA port. The NVIDIA X Server Settings seem to agree, so what's up with the display on the second monitor? https://photos.app.goo.gl/M1R9MQnDMCaD7qca6 When I try saving the X Configuration File, it warns me that I should use relative positioning for the second display, instead of absolute positioning. Maybe that's the problem, but I can't find that setting anywhere. Got any ideas? -- Rich

I started to wonder if maybe I'm not thinking about this with a eye to the future. Maintaining this will be difficult. I decided to take a look on flathub.org. It does have a flatpak for pcsx2. https://flathub.org/apps/details/net.pcsx2.PCSX2 It is listed as 1.5.0-dev. The playstation 2 bios files needed to moved to a different location. It runs about the same as the regular version. Steambot Chronicles doesn't run at full speed on my computer (about ~50% PS2 speed). The flatpak version may have been a percent or two behind but hard to say for certain. I did have problems installing it. Following the instructions on the site didn't work. The repository is added in my Gnome Software but clicking on install gave an error "Failed to install file: not supported". Not sure why that is. PCSX2

Before the meeting on games, I tested pcsx2 thinking maybe I could show it. However, it was removed from rpmfusion in Fedora 30. PCSX2 is playstation 2 emulator. I have a working PS2 but the He-Man game was only released in Europe and it is region locked. The emulator finally allowed me to try the game. Since I didn't like losing that ability I've rebuilt the pcsx2 package for Fedora 30. http://identicalsoftware.com/dulsi/lzma-libs-4.32.7-21.fc30.i686.rpm http://identicalsoftware.com/dulsi/pcsx2-1.4-11.fc30.i686.rpm The src rpms are exactly the same as the files from fedora and rpmfusion. I cheated a bit in compiling the pcsx2 package. It had some errors with system headers files. Rather than create a patch to make it compile, I hacked the system header files. (It was a throw away VM because pcsx2 can't compile in 64 bit.) Gaming on Linux

Does anyone have a favorite tower defense game? Has anyone come across something like World of Tanks for Linux (preferably something that doesn't require WINE or Vulkan)? I was pleased to find Minecraft was in my default repositories. I installed it, but haven't tried it yet. -- Rich
