Oh, in that case, simply explain to her that you couldn't reply to her because your IMAP MUA wasn't properly setup to tunnel SMTP traffic via SSH and all your attempts were just ending up in /dev/null! Hiding information is not a healthy start to a new relationship you know... ;-)

I've been doing that occasionally, but I don't want much personal mail going through their servers, and (pardon me if this is too much information) I want to reply to a girl's email via match.com, but match.com expects my emails to come from match(a)richardklein.org, and I think my emails end up in /dev/null if they come from some other address. Obviously, I'd prefer to reply to her from home, but I haven't been home much to even sit down at the computer lately. -- Rich

Mail problem for a Monday morning

by Klein, Richard

It's Monday morning, I'm tired, and I've got a headache, so I'm not sure I can even explain the problem right now, let alone solve it. Work seems to block port 25 (SMTP), but not 993 (IMAP-S) or 22 (SSH), so I can SSH into my (home) mail server, or read my mail via IMAP, but I can't send anything. My (home) email account doesn't have a shell account, so I can't log-in via SSH and send email in pine or something (and that would be a PITA, anyway). What are my options? Can I use putty to tunnel SMTP through port 22 SSH? One of these days I'll set up webmail and this will be a moot point, but I'm hoping for a quicker, more immediate solution. -- Thanks, Rich

Re: [Wlug] Image/Backup tools

by Eric Stein

There are many applications for doing backups, most of which have strong and weak points. I use 3 systems: * Homemade shell script that tgzs the entire backup set into a dated file, encrypts it with gpg, and transfers it to the backup server. o Strong points 1. Secure - no need to trust foreign server 2. High redundancy of data o Weak points 1. Bandwidth intensive (only good for small data sets) 2. Heavy on CPU usage 3. Uses a lot of disk space * Rsync o Strong points 1. Space efficient on the backup server 2. Bandwidth efficient 3. Fast o Weak points 1. No revisions; undetected data loss will be propagated to the backup server * rdiff-backup o Strong points 1. Bandwidth efficient 2. Has revisions and stores diffs compressed 3. Somewhat space efficient because of the compressed diffs o Weak points 1. Uses more space on the backup server than Rsync I use Rsync for mirroring my less important data, and rdiff-backup for my important files. All of these methods can be scheduled with cron. My personal favorite is Bacula. http://www.bacula.org/ It's a client/server based backup system with tons of great features. -- Frank Sweetser fs at wpi.edu | For every problem, there is a solution that WPI Network Engineer | is simple, elegant, and wrong. - HL Mencken GPG fingerprint = 6174 1257 129E 0D21 D8D4 E8A3 8E39 29E3 E2E8 8CEC

Image/Backup tools

by Michael Zarozinski

Hi all, I'm looking for recommendations for backup/imaging tools. We have 2 servers runing RHEL4, one is a production server and the other a development server. We were recently hit with a DOS attack and possibly a root kit attack. It's been a long task re-installing all the software/tweaks we've made so I'm looking for something to ease this process if it happens in the future. Thanks in advance, Michael Z

Stuff in need of a good home

by Eric Martin

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 As some of you know, my fiancee and I just bought our first home. We are moving in two weeks and I'm trying to clean out some stuff from my basement. I have a Sun Ultra1 Sparc64 with 17" monitor, an additional graphics card, 2 internal drives and a 1GB external drive. I can't find the keyboard and mouse right now but I'm sure they 'll turn up. For all of you mac enthusiasts, I have a Beige Mac G3 (oldworld) with monitor, keyboard and mouse. I did get gentoo to run on it via bootx, and I might even be able to scrounge up CDs. Lastly (for the moment) is a Blue iMac G3 (new world) with keyboard and mouse. Email me off list, freak4uxxx(a)gmail.com if you are interested. I would like to get rid of this before Wed March 28th. Stuff is on a first come, first serve basis.
