One of their people had contacted the WPI Student ACM Chapter asking for help, but I'm not sure if anything ever came of that. I think a couple of them even showed up to the Linux Installfest the ACM had back in early April, so there's definitely activity going on with that group. Doing something jointly definitely sounds like it could be mutually benefitial. just my 2 pence -frank p

Luckily, libraries tend to have their own standard data formats, like MARC: http://www.loc.gov/marc/

My experience, exporting a commercial database can be tough.. Find out if your lucky enough to have a ODBC interface or something. or try and find where the database stores it's files and try to decipher :). Keller, Tim wrote: > Nope. No sense reinventing the wheel... When you say "open source" I'm taking a broad shot in the dark that you want to setup some sort of linux based web front end with a mysql or postgres backend? The first big issue your going to have to tackle is getting the data out of the existing database. I highly doubt that this proprietary software will let you do something like export your whole catalog to a comma delimited file. If it can, then you'd be all set. However, it probably should allow you to run a report of all the volumes you've got in your library. Either way, you'll need to get your data into some sort of normalized form that you could use to populate your new database. Hope this helps...
