Looking for a new system

by John Stoffel

Guys, I've been looking around for a new system at home, basically to act as a file server (NFS, Samba) and backup server using Bacula. It also needs to run http and mysql and other daemons as needed. I'd like to get at least a pair of 250gb drives to mirror them for storage, with LVM volumes on top. And of course room for expansion to another pair of drives down the line. But I'd like it smallish and quiet as well. Oh yeah, it needs to have a PCI slot for a SCSI controller, since my tape drive is SCSI for backups. Desires: - small - cheap - quiet - low power - boots without a keyboard/mouse needed at all - onboard video (don't really need it at all) - PCI slots for expansion - four 3.5" drive bays internally - SATA ports on board - AMD or VIA EPIA - 1Gb of RAM or more. I've looked at the Via EPIA style systems. Just not sure if they have enough oomph for what I want. The other thought is to just take my old Dell Precision dual cpu Xeon 550mhz box and make that my main server, holding all my data, etc. It's got the drive bays, and PCI slots and scsi controller all in there already. I could add in some SATA controllers for the new disks without a problem. And it would continue to hold my ISA 8-port serial card. And it's got the memory for what it would be doing pretty much as well. Then I'd just get a new system for my desktop with a much smaller disk drive. Systems I've looked at: - bare bones AMD x2 on ebay. - VIA Epia Nanoscale dual CPU box http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS7109201579.html - buying a dell from their closeouts Any comments? John

I'll throw out a friend's service: http://www.alienwebshop.com/ I use him for colo services as opposed to managed hosting, but he does that too. :) > > Who are people using for shared web/email hosting? I use qwk.net. Not as cheap as some others people have recommended but they have excelent service. I believe they handle all of those requirements in their $10/month plan but haven't checked to be sure. I've never checked what linux distro they run as it doesn't matter to me. http://vpsland.com/ has a Linux VM for $10/m. On the other hand, if you can find two friends to share the cost you can have your own server for $30/m from http://serverpronto.com/ . -Adam On 9/26/06, Bill Mills-Curran <bill(a)mills-curran.net> wrote: > On Mon, Sep 25, 2006 at 03:05:27PM -0700, Andre Lehovich wrote: > > Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2006 15:05:27 -0700 (PDT) > > From: Andre Lehovich <andrel(a)yahoo.com> > > To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org > > Subject: [Wlug] shared web/email hosting providers > > Precedence: list > > Reply-To: Worcester Linux Users Group <wlug(a)mail.wlug.org> > > > > Who are people using for shared web/email hosting? www.theaardvark.com runs what you want at $6/month. People and businesses who I know use it have never had any complaints. I have been a happy DreamHost customer for a number of years now. They have had a few hiccups over the past few weeks, but for less than 10 bucks a month and the excellent support and service they have given me over the years I can't really complain. They run Debian and provide pretty much every service you'd need including ssh. Their bandwidth and storage is insane even on the low plans. Check out their plans and if you decide to sign up you can punch in "BITBISTRO50OFF" for a $50 discount on any plan. shared web/email hosting providers

by Andre Lehovich

Who are people using for shared web/email hosting? I'm looking for IMAP/POP/webmail over SSL (I need all three over SSL), plus light web hosting for a vanity domain. (Don't need crypto for the website.) Virtual servers seem to be out of my price range, but the shared hosting services fit my budget (c. $10/month). I've got a slight preference for Debian, but really any Linux (or BSD) distro is fine. Any recommendations? Thanks, --Andre __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? How do I change my default paths? Here's how to find out. First, figure out what shell you're using with this cmd from a console or shell window: grep `whoami` /etc/passwd The rightmost executable is the shell you're using. Mine says /bin/bash. So next use this command, substituting your shell: man bash And search for "path" by using the '/' key. What you'll find is that the shell reads system wide default config files located in /etc and then reads config files in your home directory, if present, which can override the system wide settings. In bash, you could override the PATH environment variable by adding a line like this to your ~/.bash_profile file: PATH="$PATH:/my/custom/directory" to add /my/custom/directory to the search path. Note that I put it *after* the system default path. Putting non-standard directories before standard directories is a security risk because a non-priviledged user could put a malicious program in the non-standard directory and it would be found before a legitimate program of the same name in a standard directory. Hope this makes sense, BR

newbie question: path

by d.maly＠ieee.org

Should be able to figure this out with a little homework, but can't! Can't figure out where I define my "default paths." That is, if I check the properties of my 'Evolution' icon on my desktop, the Launcher gives this for the command: "evolution-2.6" Presumably, the path for this application is defined in a list of 'default paths.' How do I change my default paths? Thanks in advance, Doug Maly
