Upcoming meetings - topic proposals

HI everybody, For our next meeting, I would like to have somebody finish the thread from the last meeting or two by explaining the contents of their firewall script and why the series of ipchains commands works for them. This might be helpful to folks who are either considering implementing a firewall or who want to understand the canned script that they got from wherever. My idea for a subsequent meeting was to have a newbie meeting as we haven't had one in quite some time. One idea I had was to discuss a shell: a) bash - scripting, command line "tricks" perhaps go over a "real" script, such as a startup script in /etc/init.d/wherever... Another idea would be to discuss the use of digital cameras with Linux. Are there other topics people would like to see? Are there volunteers to take on these topics? Take a look at your /etc/modules.conf file and see if you have anything uncommented in that file that looks like this: alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=none,none I am running a 2.2.18 kernel, and this is part of what I have. Since I have this, the proper modules get installed when I boot the machine. Check and see what you have. You might be able to get stuff working this way. I am going to guess that the "device or resource busy" is coming from your lpd daemon. Check to see if lpd is running with something like this: ps ax | grep lpd Good luck! Sorry Brian and Keith, I was being silly, when I wrote 2.2.15-4mdk I was assuming that the "mdk" was a cue for Mandrake. Wasn't trying to make that tough. Andy, Mike, Wesley, Jeff, et. al, thanks for helping me out on this. So here is where I stand, I have discovered a backlog of queued docs and deleted them, but I am getting Device or resource busy when I try to insmod the two missing pieces from lsmod. It might be as easy as loading a kernel module to make this work. Try this: 1) log in as root 2) type "lsmod" and see if "lp", "parport_pc" and "parport" show up 3) If they don't show up, you'll have to see if you have them: Look in /lib/modules/YOUR_KERNEL_REV/misc for lp.o, parport_pc.o, and parport.o If they are there, try "insmod parport parport_pc lp" (or something like that). If they are not there, you'll need to install the kernel modules package or empark on building them yourself. 4) Run "lsmod" again and you should now see them (as in step 2). 5) Once they show up in "lsmod", try: cat SOME_TEXT_FILE > /dev/lp0 Let us know how it goes, or if we can be of further help.
