That's great. It's especially funny because that image is lying on an MSNBC website. > Send Wlug mailing list submissions to > wlug(a)mail.wlug.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://mail.wlug.org/mailman/listinfo/wlug > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > wlug-request(a)mail.wlug.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > wlug-owner(a)mail.wlug.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Wlug digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. DistCC

by Ryan Caron

It appears that at least a couple people here are using Gentoo. I am working on building a DistCC (Distributed C Compiling) network so that our "emerge -u world" and Stage 1 installations go by that much quicker. It has substantially improved my installation time - my first Stage 1 install, which did not use Distcc took nearly 3 days (some downtime was incurred since I had to sleep and go to class). With only 2 Pentium 4's and 1 Pentium 3, I was able to cut that time down to about 24 hours - the installation was on my 1.6Ghz Celeron, so you know that most of the compiling capabilities wasn't done on that! If you would like to use the Distcc network I'm putting together to get your Gentoo box running or to make emerge -u world that much quicker, all I ask is that you please run the Distcc server on your machine as well. The list of servers, scheduled emerge -u world times, and a script I wrote to automatically do emerge -u world is available at: http://www.acm.wpi.edu/~rcaron/Gentoo.shtml Gentoo's HOW-TO on configuring DistCC is at: http://www.Gentoo.org/doc/en/distcc.xml Please email me if you have any questions or would like to contribute to the network. Sincerely, Ryan Caron ACM Secretary

There are a couple alternatives here: http://fedora.redhat.com/ (Fedora Core is replacing Red Hat Linux) http://www.fedoralegacy.org/ (supporting EOL Red Hat/Fedora Core distros) http://www.whiteboxlinux.org/ (rebuilt from Red Hat Enterprise Linux) > 1. Is this normal (read: goofy) windows security? If the shares are set for guest access, yes. Or, if you have not set an administrator password. Or if your username/password on the client is the same as the username/password on the server, Windows will use the cached credentials.

Thanks for offering to loan your copy of PQMagic for the Installfest. I think we'll give the Open Source options a run through before the event; if they cause problems we'll revert to PQMagic. Concerning your server, I would move to another distro. I personally use Gentoo, but for your applications you may want to go with Debian. I like Gentoo since its so customizable, and the fact that everything is compiled from the source code speeds up the computer a fair amount. For Apache file permissions, directories should be 755 and files should be 644 as I understand it. I've always had a hard time with Samba and file permissions, so I would leave that to someone else. Apache and Samba config files can be very unique to what you are trying to accomplish with both - the only thing I can really suggest is to copy the config files onto a disk before your wipe out so you don't have to start from scratch! If you're looking to stick with Redhat (or something very similiar), you might want to look at Whitebox linux. (http://www.whiteboxlinux.org) In order to follow the GPL, Redhat provides source RPMs for all of the packages that they distribute with Redhat enterprise. Whitebox is Redhat enterprise rebuilt from those source RPMs. If you don't care if it's close to redhat or not, then you have a number of choices ahead of you. Debian is nice for a server assuming you don't want the latest and greatest. Gentoo is good if you want the latest and greatest, but don't care as much about stability and you want to get really in depth knowledge on how your system works. Mandrake and SuSE are both good choices if you're looking for systems back by companies complete with paid support when necessary.
