new program, possible meeting topic [was Re: [Wlug] New meeting schedule posted]

by John M Rulnick

> I'm still seeing a volunteer to run the June meeting with some > topic of interest. I'd welcome a chance to talk for a few minutes at the June meeting, if possible. The focus would be on a new weekend program I'm involved with launching at Bay Path College Central Mass Center that's aimed at developing Linux-savvy sys-, net-, and database admins. I suppose there may be some potential students in WLUG, but just as likely (more likely) there may be folks interested in teaching in the program. I could talk about pretty much any aspect of the program that interests people. If the June meeting works out, I could of course give more details and answer questions then. If not, no problem, perhaps July or August? -- and anyone interested in the meantime is more than welcome to contact me. John

New meeting schedule posted

by Andy Stewart

HI all, Please check the recently updated WLUG website for the meeting schedule for the next 12 months or so. Note that we'll be having our annual WLUG BBQ at Doug Waud's house on Wednesday, July 21 (weather permitting). More details forthcoming. I'm still seeing a volunteer to run the June meeting with some topic of interest. Otherwise, I'll have to cram and give a presentation about the bootsplash software, which would be tough for me to demo since VMware doesn't work on SuSE 9.1 (yet). See ya later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org

Re: [Wlug] Trolling for topics for the June meeting

by frank p

Here are a few ideas I've been mulling over, some applicable for now, some for later. If I had a vote for this month, I'd say the first one would be an interesting experiment in organized anarchy ;+) -frank p ---Distro roundup:--- We could have a discussion about the strengths _and_ weaknesses of the popular distro's. My idea with this one is that your selection of a distro should be dependent on what you're looking for... stability and security vs. usability, ave-joe vs. IT / programmer, general vs. specific use (desktop vs. server) Of course there would be at least a little distro-evangelism, but as long as everyone is civil / respectable then it def would be "fun", and maybe even educational. ---Gaming / Relaxing with Linux:--- This might be good for the fall, when there's an influx of new students to the surrounding schools. We could go over some of the simple games on a default install of the common distro's / desktops. Touch on simple stuff like solitaire and also more complex like FreeCIV and even UT2k2. This would be a good lead-in to a LAN party at some point, too :+) ---How to effectively use the OpenOffice suite:--- I've personally always wanted to use it more often, but haven't taken the plunge, yet. It'd be neat to hear from a few people who use it on a regular basis and some stories about (in)compatibilities with the MS equivalent apps. ---Setting up a Content Management System for your website:--- A really nice way to setup something for non-programmers to edit web content, especially for volunteer organizations (oh yes, I'm talking from experience here). This could either be an intro to them in general with a focus / example of one in particular, or maybe a round-up of a few different ones and their strengths / weaknesses.
