RE: [Wlug] networking for dummies

What chipset is the wireless card? -----Original Message----- From: wlug-bounces(a)mail.wlug.org [mailto:wlug-bounces@mail.wlug.org] On Behalf Of Andrew Perry Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2005 12:50 PM To: wlug(a)mail.wlug.org Subject: [Wlug] networking for dummies Hi All, I have a wireless network established at home using the latest version of a certain very widely used operating system whose name I dare not speak. I've been trying for years to "convert" to Linux, mostly for ideological reasons, but without much luck. I've succesfully installed a few distributions of Linux onto various PC's (mostly older), and I can play CD's and use office software with no problem. The real deal-breaker (the reason I haven't started using linux except as a novelty) is that I've never gotten the internet to work with Linux. With that other OS, installation of a wireless adapter is easy, and the OS generally recognizes it instantly. Are there any linux distros that will do the same thing (perhaps in conjunction with certain wireless adapters) ? Right now I have SUSE 9.1 (Home) running, and when I plug in a USB wireless adapter, nothing happens, and I can't figure out what to do. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks, Andrew ===== -Dr. Andrew B. How can you best benefit an > open-source community ;-P. i'm a Gentoo developer (would have never guess that huh!) ... currently i'm the lead for the games team and i co-load the qa/base/toolchain teams. since not too many people wander outside the realm of x86 (and amd64), i'm also the lead for the arm and superh ports. in my spare, spare time, i work on the Gentoo embedded team where i hack on our cross-compiling toolchain capabilities and i help develop uClibc both upstream (http://uclibc.org/) and in integrating it as a drop-in replacement for glibc. working with solar (the other embedded guy i work with), we release uclibc stages for x86/ppc/arm/mips/mipsel. i also enjoy a cold mountain dew beverage and long walks on the beach. if anyone has non-x86 machines to spare, i enjoy donations :) particularly a m68k/coldfire box would be sweet ... Gentoo doesnt have a port for it [yet] anyone else feel like gushing ? ;) -mike

I guess that my new snazzy gmail account confounded me. I would think that just hitting reply should reply to the poster of the message. Not so. I think that a nice hidden replyto: field may have subverted my efforts. Now that the whole group has a better feel for who I am, I feel that it is your obligation to respond and let me know a little more about yourself. What do you do in your spare time? How can you best benefit an open-source community ;-P. Hey there, I want to preface this by saying that I have no specific experience in an embedded Linux development environment. That said, I have written Linux device drivers (PCMCIA) in the past, and I have extensive embedded development experience in my current position. (I can send you my CV, if that would help.) What is the duration/onsite requirement of the project? I am currently working full-time, but could be enticed away for a long-term contract, or I could do some on-the-side sort of work if the workload was less intense. Just putting out feelers. Re: [Wlug] audio on new machine

Well... it's not being utterly depreciated, it's being superseded with "udev". Basically, the /dev directory has become dynamic. http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev.html Explains it quite nicely. Tim.
