You need to get in line at least 30 minutes before it opens, or forget it. Even at that, you'll be waiting at least an hour. Its a nice idea, I just wish they had more bandwidth. Thanks for the tip. I went last year with a mini-van chock full to the brim. There was a line of cars literally a mile long and police were checking ID's to confirm you are a resident of Worcester. I knew I wouldn't make in before closing. Since then, the huge pile of e-trash sitting in my back yard is leaching who-knows-what directly into the watershed. We had a discussion on network tuning after the last meeting. Here are some interesting docs on how to enable high performance data transfers: http://www.psc.edu/networking/projects/tcptune/ http://www.web100.org/

It does not have an external power source, to answer eric's question. I got a hold of a Y cable, but that didn't seem to help at all. One labtop is linux and the other labtop is OS X. They both were able to see the drive fine and mount it with the single USB cable, not the Y cable. Currently the drive is formated hfs since i was testing it with the OS X labtop. I find it strange that it can half see the drive. fdisk can see the drive and partition it, but if you try to format the drive you get nothing by read errors on just about every sector on the hard drive. When i get back to my apartment, i will try Eric's suggestion on seeing if a jump drive (which i assume is the same thing as a usb flash drive) can be read by my mythtv box. Thanks for you suggestions, - Brad

2.5" external drives are usually powered off the USB bus. If that were the problem, I wouldn't expect linux to see the drive as sda1 at all. Are the laptops that it does work with both linux? Is it formatted as NTFS? I have a hard drive that is powered via usb and I know you need to plug both of the USB cables from the Y into the same usb 'block' (you can't plug one in the front and the other in the back). If you were doing that, try plugging them in next to each other. Otherwise I think it's a usb problem. That's easily detectable by using a jump drive in the same ports and check /var/log/messages or dmesg. Also, if it is bad usb hw on your myth box the hub won't fix it (which is more reason to try one). My usb hd has a slot for power, does yours? If so I'd suggest trying it.
