Mike, When I bought my current box I was still stuck in Windows, so I do not know how Linux friendly they are, but in Shrewsbury there is a company named Elkco on Rt. 9 over by the Shrewsbury Village end of town that custom crafts computers. I had very good luck with them and fairly good support after the fact. My old man bought a mess of computers from them for a school and they built them all to spec and they all worked fine. embedded QT

It looks like I'm finally going to have time to go out and pick up a serial cable so I can get brother Bill off of my iPAQ. But I've got a question for anyone who has done this ahead of me: Are there any speadsheets that have either been created for familiar linux or Embedded QT? The QTpalmtop web site has got some screen shots, and one has a link to a spreadsheet, but they don't mention it and I can't find the package anywhere. Unfortuately, I've got to have a spreadsheet so I can keep track of hours and expenses and such, so I'm kinda stuck, maybe I shoulda gotten a vr3? Also, are there any utilities out there that would allow me to do irsync with palms?

I'll grab the name later, but there is a place on route 30 in Westborough that will build a PC to spec and put whatever distro you want on it. They're primarily a windows office, but when I asked about Linux they said, "Sure, we've been getting more and more requests for Linux lately and we'll put whatever you want on it!" This makes me happy. Like I said, I'll get the name/number later, but take rt 30 from 9 into town and you can't miss it on your left (about 100 yards before the traffic circle). I've bought a few systems there plus parts to build the one I have now. They have been offering Linux systems with Red Hat or Suse. If you want to build your own they have a good offering of motherboards and CPU's. Their descriptions of hardware will state if it's ok for Linux. Figure out what you want in terms of horsepower and order the stuff. $500 or so ought to get you a respectable system: 1000+ MHz Athlon 128 MB RAM 20 GB HDD Asus MLB Nvidia graphics Cab with 300 Watt PS Good heat sink for the CPU I purchased most of my stuff from www.puicorp.com in Houston, although you certainly can get deals if you're willing to settle for something in the 700 MHz range. Check www.pricewatch.com for sources and prices. I recently upgraded my 300 MHz box to a 1200 MHz system. Do a home network and hack it together. The sugguestion about getting involved in help-desk work is really good too because all of the sudden you HAVE to learn all this stuff so you can help people (though you may go insane doing it, "I've got 600 messages in my "saved" box on the mail server, should I have backed these up on my local machine?"). If you've got a friend who is a system admin start talking to them as you hack your network, this will have to be a good friend who will not mind giving you advice for free that he charges other people for; but friends can put into English what man pages can only put into "networkspeak", without friends, I'd never even tried to learn linux and would still be a slave of Microsoft. If you want to learn network-related services (DHCP, DNS, NIS, Sendmail, etc,) that's more of a System Administrator role. Network Admininistrator implies the focus is on the network (TCP/IP, routing, VLANs, Spanning Tree, etc.) Some folks (myself included) do pieces of both. If you want to be a network-centric admin, I would probably start looking at networking textbooks and possibly work towards becoming a CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Admin.) I have been working as a Unix Sys Admin for Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting) for the last few months, although I have been with the company for 3 years. I agree with what Gary said and additionally would add getting your foot in the door working at a helpdesk somewhere. I know from experience that most tech companies will look within before hiring from the outside to fill positions.
