Re: SanDisk Clip Sport Question

by Kevin Stratton

The following is based some very old memories of reading some articles about the charging profiles of lithium ion batteries. I expect that there are inaccuracies in my memory. Assuming that this has a lithium ion battery and this was the result of over discharging the battery, it is possible that the battery voltage is below the minimum voltage for the charging circuitry inside theSan Disk Clip. This behavior is an intentional behavior of chargers for safety reasons. If you insist on taking the risk of bypassing this safety feature, it is your risk. The unit has to be under charge for a l-o-n-g time, relying on internal leakage current to s-l-o-w-l-y charge the battery to above the minimum voltage to actually charge the battery. Several hours may not enough time to do this. I would consider "charging" this unit for several days to be sure that the unit will not take a charge. After running several different charging options, it seem like it's the battery. It may go back in that drawer again for now, but thank you for the help! Joel/Robert/All: Thank you for the speedy replies. I am guessing that the unit is about 12 years old. I forget when I purchased it but only powered it up once or twice when I got it and it's been since sitting silently in a drawer. I am trying a different charger (just now) and will let that sit for a couple hours in case the charger was the issue. I looked on line regarding the battery replacement and it does not sound like it would be worth the effort and cost. Hopefully I the alternate charger fixes the issue. If it's the battery, I will likely move on. My intent is to use it to listen to podcasts in my car. I was previously using a 2nd generation ipod nano, but my one Windows PC that had itunes developed issues and I no longer have it. You didn't say how old it is, but batteries do lose capacity over time and that battery might be shot by now. The fact that it runs on charge but powers off immediately upon disconnect suggests that the battery is the culprit. It's possible that it's the battery connector. If the battery is not replaceable that's less likely (the battery might be soldered or even spot welded), but not impossible. You could try disassembling it to see whether it's replaceable.

Re: SanDisk Clip Sport Question

My son has used and abused one of those for around 10 years. Was a cheap way for 2rd grader to listen to music on school bus. His still works and charges every few years when he takes it out. Admittedly its use was daily until momentus day at 13 he became a teenage android cell user. Enough of my teary eyed reminicing... Back to your concern. The tiny battery on it and its battery charging circuit is internal. If it was mine I would try the following: 1) try the reset device, details belowm 2) try many USP outputs: wall charging blocks, laptop port, desktop port . 3) try many usb charging cords that fit its input port. 4) do you need this specific device (music on it, etc)? If yes consider troubleshooting internals to device. One ebay vendor sells internal batteries If no, consider another music solution The sanfisk forum page below explains how to reset device as well. Hold power button down for 15+ seconds resets. Release button. Then short press to try to turn on. https://forums.sandisk.com/t/my-sandisk-clip-sport-is-not-turning-on/68240 Hope it helps, Joel On March 29, 2025 10:44:56 AM The Hammer via WLUG <wlug(a)lists.wlug.org> wrote: > Would anyone be knowledgeable? > > I have an old 8 GB SanDisk Clip Sport that I am trying to resurrect if it > can be done easily. > > > Yesterday I left it connected to my Linux Computer USB for two hours. Can it charge and play at the same time? If so a battery bank might be a hacky solution. If you’re looking to fix it; I’d recommend ifixit.com. Those are my two “easy” fix solutions. SanDisk Clip Sport Question

by The Hammer

Would anyone be knowledgeable? I have an old 8 GB SanDisk Clip Sport that I am trying to resurrect if it can be done easily. Yesterday I left it connected to my Linux Computer USB for two hours. The screen read "Low Battery" This morning, I plugged it into a house charger and left it charging for nearly three hours. The same "Low Battery' Screen appeared. If I hit the power button the MUSIC screen appears. I had music on there from tinkering years back. The unit seems to operate fine (I plugging in earplugs and listened to music) while charging, but as soon as I disconnect the charge wire no matter what the screen view, it all goes dark. On line searches have not been helpful. Any thoughts? ...fyi leaving it even longer on the charger just in case Ron

I'll be there tonight! I've got some thoughts on TrueNAS since I'm running the older Core version at $WORK with an active/passive setup. It's... ok, no netapp. But you get what you pay for.

Reminder! Meeting this week March 13th! Topic: MinIO / restic

by Tim Keller

Hey Everybody, We've got a meeting this Thursday! Time: 7pm Date: March 14th, 2025 Physical Location: Technocopia, 44 Portland Ave Worcester MA. Virtual Location: https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA I was thinking of doing a quick talk about my experiences with MinIO. It's S3 storage on prem that works really great! In addition to that I've been experimenting with restic. Restic is a backup system that can make use of S3/MinIO storage to create efficient backups. Remember, there are two types of people in the world.. Those who have backups and those who *wish they had!* To dovetail with this is another topic that people might find interesting, that is TrueNAS Scale. I've been using it in production and for personal fun as well. Its App stack is pretty slick for people who want to start self hosting. Later, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

We've got a meeting Tonight!! Time: 7PM Date: 2/13/2025 Location: Technocopia, 44 Portland St. Worcester MA. Virtual Location: https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA Topic: JetKVM Long time WLUG Member John Stoffel is going to be demoing his JetKVM ( https://jetkvm.com/) It's a next generation KVM over IP that started as a kickstarter and is now a "real product". Fully hackable, this FOSS KVM has a bunch of neat features. As usual expect a lively conversation, a cool demo and our usual shenanigans. Afterwards we'll likely head off for dinner and keep the conversation going! I hope to see you all there!
