reboot problem

At the meeting before last, I asked about a problem I'm having with the computer occasionally going to a black screen with no disk activity on reboot, right after the grub menu goes away. Overnight memtest showed no errors, I put a different vid card in, and still had the black screen problem. One of the things someone mentioned was to test the power supply. Recently, I had a few hard lockups and a couple of spontaneous reboots. So, how do I test my power supply, other than replacing it and seeing if the problem goes away? Or is that evidence enough to change it ASAP? According to lm-sensors, voltages are fine, and I've even sat and watched gkrellm for long periods of time - they look stable. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Greg

What about something with wireless technologies, I always hear complaints about wireless in Linux. Looking for a project and contact person

I am looking for a good project to get involved with and I am looking for ideas. What I offer to the potential project: 1) Low level programming experience (no operating system) in C. I do know some assembly programming, but I would likely have to learn or relearn the architecture being used or developed for. I am currently developing non-trivial applications for microchip microcontrollers and I have also worked with MIPS4 (Microprocessor Without Interlocking Pipeline Stages). 2) Ability to read a datasheet and understanding of how hardware works. 3) Time Where I am weak (today): Although I consider myself to have basic linux/gentoo skills there is a plethora of linux topics and technologies that I need to learn in a more methodical way. I am willing to do my homework, but I looking for the focus or direction of a project to force me to learn these things. What I hope to achieve: Learn more about the interfaces to the kernel and other resources. I eventually wish to be reasonably independent developing for an embedded system. An example of a project that may be appropriate is lm_sensors, but at this time I am unwilling to continuously buy hardware to develop on. Depending on what software you use to watch movies... I'm fairly certain mplayer and gxine try do this by default, as I only recall having had the screensaver kick in while watching something in totem. -- Aaron Haviland

My P4m-based laptop (Dell Inspiron 8200) running debian etch blanks the screen after 15 minutes, even if I disable the screensaver and all power saving options. I don't watch movies on it that often, so I resigned myself to hitting the CTRL key every so often when I do. I installed Ubuntu Guilty Gibson on my Opteron-based desktop (Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard) yesterday and found it does exactly the same thing. Andy, The meeting went great. We had one new person show up and we showed off Fedora Core and (I think) Ubuntu. We also started an install on a laptop (but that was a bit rocky). Seven of us then ended up at the Goat's Head for Pizza. I do have to say, that place is MUCH nicer than usual place we have pizza. My vote is that we go back their next meeting!
