invincible processes

by Gregory Avedissian

I just had some strange stuff happen to my SuSE 8.2 installation - it's stalling when I try to copy files and run some programs. If I try to kill the process, it doesn't go away (kill -9 pid, as root), and the machine won't shut down because stuff is still running. This coincidentally happened the same day that I started to prepare a replacement hard drive, so it's not on a critical installation (in fact, it's going to be wiped), but I'd still like to know what's going on. Note that I totally disconnected this drive when I was installing on the new one, just to make sure I didn't do anything to hurt it. Any ideas on what this could be or where to look would be appreciated. Greg

Yea but open office draw doesn't have the flowchart "stencils," which means I'd have to create all the basic flowchart types myself. Xfig kinda falls under the same category. I'm really looking for something that does flowcharting out of the box and I've yet to find it. This is one of the few things that keeps me rebooting into my windows partition. Re: [Wlug] Encrypted USB pen drive

Yea, I ended up following the loop-aes and it work beautifully. The only problem is that the mount it root:root and can't be changed. However I was able to create a directory that is owned by my user and use that directory underneath just fine. It's actually really neat to have and was easier than I thought with Fedora Core 2. What about looking at /proc/scsi/scsi? You can probably parse out the Vendor/Model to decide what ID you are. That is just off the top of my head tho. Thanks Brian > Now I have a question for someone. As for tips, here you go: If you want to be able to use the device on Windows, you have to leave the FAT filesystem on there. Your encrypted filesystem will just be a large file on that filesystem that you'll mount loopback-style. You won't be able to read the encrypted stuff in Windows, but you can use the free space to do things, which is handy sometimes. Umm... that's it for tips. Now I have a question for someone. When I plug in my USB thingy, I get some pseudo-random SCSI ID for the device (depending upon whether I was cd burning, or I installed a different USB media). Is there any easy way to figure out the mapping between the USB device and the SCSI ID? (So I can improve my magic scripts...) [OT] Introduction

by Brian Waite

Hi all. I wanted to quickly introduce myself. I just recently subscribed to the list and wanted to do a bit more than lurk. I hope to make a LUG meeting in the near future also. I don't want to waste too much bandwidth so I'll keep this short. If anyone is going up to the Ottawa Linux Symposium this month, maybe we can catch up and make some introductions, for everyone else, I look forward to meeting you all the LUG meeting. As I side note, I read the archives and wanted to second the idea for a "distro debate" LUG meeting. I think that would be really interesting to see what everyone runs and why. Thanks for the time Brian Waite

Encrypted USB pen drive

by Chuck Haines

Has anyone configured an encrypted usb pen drive under linux? I'm not talking about encrypting single files, but being able to mount the pen drive as an encrypted device? I've look at loop-aes, but I'm curious is anyone has done this before and might give some pointers. Hi Greg I tend to use old hardware and I have the same impression; SuSE 9/XFree 4.x is less forgiving.than SuSE 8/Xfree 3.x was. I also found the 9/4 did not like my new video board (forget the model; it was a problem with the card maker not letting vendors include their driver as open source although you can freely download it. SuSE still did not seem to want to deal with it; will have to go back to XFree 3.x when I get return to it.). doug Gregory Avedissian wrote: > Update: > > Micro Center had a deal I couldn't refuse on a dvd drive, so I took a > spare hard drive and installed SuSE 9.1 yesterday. Update: Micro Center had a deal I couldn't refuse on a dvd drive, so I took a spare hard drive and installed SuSE 9.1 yesterday. The first install had a bunch of errors and wouldn't boot. I saw a list of programs that reported errors, and it was too large to even bother with. I got prompted to start the installation process and went through it a second time. I guess it didn't like my vid card. Unlike 8.2, this one doesn't come with the xfree 3.x environment that lets me run the 3.x server for my card with xfree 4.3. The entire installation process was done in console version of yast, rather than yast2. This surprised me, since earlier versions of SuSE gave me yast2 during installation, even with my funky vid card. By the end of the installation, I couldn't see words on the screen (choices) untill they got highlighted by tabbing. Second install turned out ok, except for being stuck with 640x480 display. I wiped it out, and I'll try it on another machine when I get a chance. Greg
